宗教功能的本土化阐释
——杨庆堃《中国社会的宗教》读后

中国社会中有无宗教？若有宗教其地位又当如何？儒学是否可称之
为儒教？等等疑问语式似乎历来就是学术家殚思竭虑、攻讦驳难的原始
命题。关于宗教在中国的“有”与“无”，《中国社会的宗教》一书之
名已昭示出了作者的倾向性。在著者杨庆堃先生看来，中国城市中最宽
敞最漂亮的房子往往就是庙宇，一般只有高级官员的住宅才能与之匹敌
或超过它们；稍有感性常识的人，谁也不会对遍布地方基层的庙宇和神
龛之宗教特性视而不见。当然，对这些问题的回答仅仅靠跟着感觉走是
不行的，跟着感觉走已使梁启超这样的大学者的判断出现了失误。梁启
超就曾认为，宗教史包含“神学”与“宗教组织”的变化两大方面，神
学是超越真实世界研究死后的灵魂，传统儒学的注意力则是关注于现
实。从这两个方面看，中国是否有宗教几成一大问题。任公划分“神学”
（思想层面）与“组织”（结构功能层面）的视点是相当准确的，宗教
研究的分野综括起来也不外乎这两个切入点，只是任公基本是站在“莫
言鬼神”的儒家立场上得出了感性的结论，却巧妙地绕过了“结构分析”
这一社会史研究的难点。因为中国宗教与西方基督教世界正规的组织系
统不同，它恰恰始终处于一种模糊的位置，如果不加严格的分析，很难
把握其跃动的脉博。从一定意义上说，杨庆堃先生的这本书正是使其模
糊的景象日趋明朗化的一个尝试。因为他的目的就是在纷纭多变的社会
网络系统中寻究中国宗教的“结构性位置”（The　Structural　Position）。

杨庆堃引用Joachim　Wach　的著作《宗教社会学》中的观点区分出了
两种类型的宗教组织，即“自然团体”（naturalgroups）和“特殊的宗
教”（specifically　religious），如果依据这两个概念，用结构—功
能的观点解析中国宗教，那么它大致可以界分为两种形态：一种是制度
性的宗教（institutional　reli…gion），另外一种则是分散性的宗教
（diffused　religion）。“制度性宗教”自身有独特的神学或宇宙解释
系统和形式化的（包括符号性的形象和精神表征如上帝等）崇拜祭祀系
统，并有一个独立的人事组织去促成神学观点的阐释和祭祀活动的进
行。从结构角度而言，制度性宗教的一个最大特点是其自身可独立于世
俗的社会体系之外，从而在某种程度上与之相分离。“分散性宗教”也
有其神学、祭祀与人事的运作系统，但是无论其精神内核还是形式化的
仪轨组织均与世俗制度和社会秩序有机地整合在一起，成为结构的一部
分，它自身没有任何独立存在的价值和意义。总体而观，“制度性宗教”
是作为分离出来的世俗宗教系统而独立发挥作用，“分散性宗教”则只
能作为世俗社会制度的一部分发挥其功能。与之相关的是，制度性宗教
也恰在于其相对独立存在时显现功能，它在基层社会组织中的渗透力及
示范意义也许是十分微弱的；分散性的宗教则恰恰相反，它几乎无法以
独立于社会基层网络的形式体现出来，但是它也许作为一种世俗制度和
总体社会秩序的支撑力量起着很重要的作用。

为了阐释此书中的两个核心概念，杨庆堃在逻辑运作展开中，明显


借助了西方社会学及人类学的框架与方法，因为杜克海姆就已分析过所
谓西方“分散性宗教”的特征。另一方面，杨庆堃的分析构架又不是一
种抽象的概念演绎与比附，而是牢固建立于本土化经验与实证基础之上
的，他认为中国宗教定位的模糊性，不仅取决于“多神崇拜”的形式，
而且受经济模式与地理环境的影响，如宝山地区常受海浪冲袭，故崇拜
海神；广东佛山地区则喜供火神，因为居民常受爆竹工厂的威胁。

用此二分法诠释宗教与国家之关系时，其中国特色亦会昭然若揭。
在中国社会的集体性活动中，宗教的基本功能是提供一种可与世俗活动
接轨的聚合性符号，这类符号将超越分散性的经济利益、阶层状况和社
会背景，尽可能地把民众整合于社区之内。也就是说，中国式宗教的整
合性有可能是纯功利的，而与纯粹的“信仰”无关，这种过程有可能是
呈反比进行的，即宗教在中国愈趋于“形式化”，其宗教的精神特性就
愈趋于淡化。针对具体情形述之，中国的“制度性宗教”几乎全部归王
权垄断，只有皇家才拥有十分严格乃至规模宠大的祭天、祭地、祭祖等
仪式，这些仪式可伴随着大型歌舞式的表演，历代还存留有大量汗牛充
栋式的繁琐典礼记载，民间仪式根本无法达此规模及庄重程度，但恰恰
在“形式化”的顶峰之境中，昭示出了
