no doubt察 no doubt What pity 'twas you were found out We know an

angel snob or fool殖

To Kiaran showed a common rule察An axe察an auger察and a saw察And

told that saint it was the law Of Heaven that Columbkille should be Far察

far above such saints as he察For Columbkille contemned a crown察While

he these homely tools laid down察To serve the Lord察and that the Lord To

each would give his due reward。 I wonder if that angel knew That Christ

these tools had laid down too。 O Columbkille O Columbkille A saint like

you must have his will察But for myself I'd rather be The common sinner

that you see Than make a crane ashamed of me察 And angels talk such

idiocy。

                             MISS DOANE

MISS Doane was sixty察 probably察 She rented third floor room That

opened on an airshaft full Of cooking smells and gloom。

She worked in philanthropic man's Well´known department store察

Cashiered in basement察hot and close察For forty years or more。

Each night when she came home she'd stand A moment in the hall察

Before she went into her room With low and tender call。

And often I would hear her voice Repeat a childish prayer察 Or read

some old察old fairy tale Of Princess察grand and fair。

One night I went to visit her And spied察in little chair A great wax doll察

in dainty dress察And curls of flaxen hair。

I praised the doll察 its prettiness察 Miss Doane said察 I'm alone。 She

comforts me。 I wanted so A child to call my own。;

Each night I heard her softly sing A childish lullaby察But once察and

just before she died察I heard her cry and cry

                        FALLEN FENCES

THE woods grew dark察black shadows rocked And I could scarcely see

My way along the old tote road察That long had seemed to me

To wind on aimlessly察but now Came full to life察the rain Would soon

strike down察ahead I saw A clearing察and a lane

Between gray察 fallen fences and Wide察 grayer察 grim stone walls察 So

grim and gray I shrank from thought Of weary察aching spalles。

On stony knoll great aspens swayed And swung in browsing teeth Of

wind察 slim察 silvered yearlings shook And shivered underneath。 Beyond察

some ancient oak trees bent And wrangled over roof Of weatherbeaten

house察and barn Whose sag bespoke no hoof。

And ivy crawled up either end Of house察to chimney察where It lashed

in futile anger at The wind wolves of the air。

I thought the house abandoned察and I ran to get inside察When suddenly

the old front door was opened and flung wide

And she stood there察with hand on knob察As I went swiftly in察Then

closed the door most softly on The storm and shrieking din。

A space I stood and looked at her察 So young察 'twas passing strange

That fifty years or more had gone And brought no new style's change。

The sweetness察 daintiness of her In starched and dotted gown Of

creamy whiteness察over hoops察With ruffles winding down

We had not much to say察and yet Of words I felt no lack察Her smiles

slipped into dimples察stopped A moment察then dropped back。

I felt her pride of race察her taste In silken rug and chair察And quaintly

fashioned furniture Of patterns old and rare。

On window sill a rose bush stood察'Twas bringing rose to bud察One full

bloomed there but yesterday察Dropped petals察red as blood。

Quite soon察she asked to be excused For just a moment察and Went out察

returning with a tray In either slender hand。

My glance could not but linger on Each thin and lovely cup察 This

came察dear thing察from home ─she sighed The while she raised it up。

And when the storm was done and I Arose察reluctantly To go察she too

was loath to have Me go察it seemed to me。

LET me be great察as stars are great察Singing of love察not of hate。

Love for sweet and simple things察 Like clouds and sea´shell

Cool autumn winds察pale dew´kissed flowers察Thin coils of smoke and

Snow´capped mountain peaks that flash High above a river's crash察

Shrill songs of birds and children's laughter察Soft grey shadows trailing

                    LOVE AUTUMNAL

MY love will come in autumn´time When leaves go spinning to the

ground And wistful stars in heaven chime With the leaves' sound。

Then察 we shall walk through dusty lanes And pause beneath low´

seed察But love that blooms when nature dies Is love indeed

TRAVELING at dusk the noisy city street察I listened to the newsboys'

strident cries Of ;Extra察─as with flying feet察They strove to gain this man

or that´their prize。 But one there was with neither shout nor stride察And察

having bought from him察I stood nearby察Pondering the cruel crutches at

his side察Blaming the crowd's neglect察and wondering why´

When suddenly I heard a gruff voice greet The cripple with ;On time

to´night拭─ Then察 as he handed out the sheet察 The Youngster's answer´

;You're all right。 My other reg'lars are a little late。 They'll find I'm short

one paper when they come察You see察a strange guy bought one in the wait察

I tho't 'twould cheer him up´he looked so glum ─

So察sheepishly I laughed察and went my way For I had found a city's

heart that day。
