more   unholy   loathsomeness�   �Its   heavy   eyes   are   dim   and   bleared   with 

blood�察�Its   jaws�察�by  strong convulsions   fiercely worked�察�Are clogged   and 

clotted   with   mixed   gore   and   foam�   �A   nauseous   stench   its   filthy   shape 

exhales�察  �And   through   its      heaving   bosom   you        may    mark   The     constant 

preying of a quenchless flame That gnaws its heartstrings� �while a harsh 

quick   moan   Of       mingled   wrath�察  �and   madness�察  �and   despair�察  �Perpetually 

issues   from   its   lips�察  �And   with   unequal   but   unceasing   steps�察  �It   chases 

through the hot�察�sulphureous gloom�察�A mocking phantom��fair as it is foul� �

With naked arms�察�white breast�察�and ebon locks�察�And big black eyes that 

dart the humid flame Which sets the heart ablaze�察�and red moist lips�察�And 

checks   as   spotless   as   the   falling   flake   Ere   it   has   touched   the   earth�察  �and 

supple form Wherein is knit each grace of womanhood In its perfection� �

and with wanton looks That speak the burning language of desire�察�It seems 

to woo its loathsome follower�察�Yet ever from his foul embraces flies。 And 

on   his   brow   his   name   is   written�察   �Lust� ─      �Dismiss   the   spectre�察  �for   it 

blasts my sight�察�And sears my brain with its dark hideousness� �

     Spirit。 

     'Tis gone�察�look up and see what next appears。 

     Werner。 

        A frame which may be that of Hercules�察�It hath such giant members� �

and its port Is martial as e'er marked a Caesar's moving。 Its sandals are of 

brass�察  �its   massive   brow   Is   helmeted   in   steel�察  �and   in   its   hand   It   bears   a 

sword with which�察�in idle strokes�察�It vainly beats the unresisting air�察�As if 

in   battle   with   some   phantom   foe�察  �And   at   each   blow   it   deals�察  �a   strong 

fatality Turns back its sword's keen point on its own breast�察�Which deep it 

gashes��then in mournful tone�察�It mutters o'er and o'er again these words�察�

´ ;I fought for fame and won unending wo。; His agonies seem like himself�察�

immortal。 

     Spirit。 

        Justice   is   blameless   of   his   sufferings�此  �For   many   years   his   busy�察�

plotting brain�察�Made discord out of union�察�strife from peace�察�And set the 

nations warring till the earth Was crimson with the blood poured out for 

him�   �He   bears   what   he   inflicted��let   him   pass   And   mark   what   follows 

him。 

     Werner。 

     A goodly shape�察�More fit to string and strike Apollo's lyre�察�Than bear 

the shield   or   wield   the   sword   of   Mars� �A  broken   harp�察 �suspended   at   his 

side�察�A faded garland�察�wreathed about his brow�察�Tell what he was�察�and still 

employ his care。 With thin white hand�察�that trembles at its task�察�In vain he 

strives   to   bind   the   broken    chords�察  �And     to  their   primal   melody   attune 

them�察  �In   vain��for   to   his   efforts   still   replies A  boding   strain   of   harsh�察�

discordant sound。 And then�察�with hot tears coursing down his cheeks�察�He 

lifts   his   faded   wreath   from   his   pale   brow�察  �And   gazing   on   its   withered 

leaves�察�exclaims�察 �For earthly fame I sung the songs of earth�察�Forgetful 

of   all   higher�察  �holier   themes�察  �'Tis   meet   the   meed   I   won   should   perish 

thus。; Is not the justice which confines him here Akin to cruelty�拭�for his 

sad heart Seems�察�as his earthly strains were�察�full of softness。 

     Spirit。 

        Each   thought�察  �and   word�察  �and   deed   of   mortal   man�察  �Is   but   a   moral 

seed�察 �which�察  �in due   season�察 �Must   bring   forth fruit   according to   its   kind。 

The soil wherein those seeds are sown is Time�察�

     Death is the reaper of the ripened harvest�察�The fruits are garnered in 

Eternity�察�To be�察�or good or bad�察�the spirit's food� �If then our thoughts�察�and 

words�察 �and deeds have   been   Of   corrupt   tendency�察 �or   evil nature�察�What 

marvel if we feed on bitterness�拭�What shadow next appears�拭�

     Werner。 

     An aged man�察�Lean´framed and haggard´visaged�察�bowed beneath The 

weight of years�察�or worldly cares that press Still heavier than the iron hand 

of time。 His tottering form is fearful to behold� �If the fierce scourge which

men on earth call famine�察�Could incarnate itself�察�methinks 'twould choose 

Just such a shape�察�so worn and grim and gaunt�察�And wo´begone of aspect。 

Groping   round   He   gathers   from   the   burning   floor   of   hell   Some   shining 

pebbles�察    �which    his  fond    conceit   Transmutes      to  gold�察  �and   these   with 

constant care He watches�察�counting and recounting them�察�Till suddenly a 

whirlwind�察     �sweeping      by�察 �Bears    with   it  all  his  fancied    hoards    away�察�

Leaving him to renew his bootless task�察�Which ever he renews with this 

complaint�察 �Alas� �how speedily may wealth take wing。; And on his front 

his name is written�察 �Avarice。; 

     Spirit。 

        There   yet   is�察  �in   this   shadowy   land   of   shades�察  �One   form   which   I 

would have thee look upon。 Behold it cometh� �mark and scan it well。 

     Werner。 

        Never before in all my wanderings Through earth�察�or other regions�察�

where     abide   Things     now    no  more    of  earth�察  �have   I  beheld    Aught    so 

profoundly   mournful   or   so   lone�   �So   dark   a   cloud   o'erhangs   his   haggard 

brow�察�That where he turns a dunner�察�murkier gloom Prevails along hell's 

blasting    atmosphere�        �Surrounded       by   some    goodly   forms     he  moves�察�

Forms bright as his is dark�察�who each in turn Woo his acceptance of the 

gifts they proffer。 Love stretches out his dimpled band�察�wherein He holds 

his emblematic rose�察�and Hope�察�Bright Hope�察�that might renew again the 

pulse Of life within the frozen veins of Death� �Beckons him to the future�察� 

´and calm Faith Kindles beneath his eye her beacon blaze�察�Yet�察�with such 

anguish as hell only holds�察�He turns him from all these�察�and will not take 

Love's     proffered    rose�察 �lest  'neath   its  blushing    leaves   Should    lurk   the 

stinging thorn of sly deceit。 

     Hope's     smile   to  him    is  disappointment's      signal�察  �And    the   bright 

beacon Faith so kindly lights To guide us o'er the treacherous sea of life�察�

To   him   is   but   a   cheat�察  �a   mockery�察 �An   ignis   fatuus�察  �kindled   to   mislead。 

And yet he seems as one who in his life Had nursed bright dreams�察�and 

cherished lofty aims�察�Had dreamed of love�察�or wooed Ambition's smiles�察�

Or to the sway of empires had aspired�察�Or�察�higher still�察�the sway of human 

hearts�      �Why gazest thou on me and not on him�拭�

     Spirit。 

        To mark if in thine aspect I might not Detect a consciousness that I 

thy   own   soul   Claimed   brotherhood   with   his�   �Thou   too   hast   scoffed   At 

human   love�察  �and   hope�察  �and   faith�察  �and   truth�察  �Nursing   within   thy   bosom 

pride�察�and scorn�察�And   rankling hate�察�I till   these at length became   Fiends 

which   thou   could'st   not  master� �Thou   art   warned�察  �Be   wise   and   heed   the 

warning。 Let us   now Return unto thy  far off�察 �native orb�察 �O'er which   the 

rosy   smile   of   morn   is   breaking�察  �Waking   its   teeming   millions   to   renew 

Their daily rounds of toil and strife and crime。 

     ��Exeunt。 



                                          ACT IV。 



     Scene I。 A peak of the Alps。 Werner alone。 Time�察�morning。 

     Werner。 

        How gloriously beautiful is earth� �In these her quiet�察�unfrequented 

haunts�察�To which�察�except the timid chamois' foot�察�Or venturous hunter's�察�or 

the eagle's wing�察�Naught from beneath ascends。 As yet the sun But darts 

his   earliest   rays   of   golden   light   Upon   the   summits   of   the   tallest   peaks�察�

Which   robed   in   clouds   and   capped   with   glittering   ice�察  �Soar   proudly   up�察�

and beam and blaze aloft�察�As if they would claim kindred with the stars� �

And they  may claim such kindred�察�for there is Within�察�around�察�and over 

them�察    �the  same    Supreme�察     �eternal�察 �all´creating    spirit  Which     glows    and 

burns in every beaming orb That circles in immeasurable space�                        �Far as 

the eye can trace the mountain's crest On either hand�察�a gorgeous�察�varied 

mass   Of   glowing�察  �cloud´formed   ranges   are   at   rest�察  �Reflecting   back   in 

every hue and tint�察�

     Purple   and   crimson�察  �orange   and   bright   gold�察  �The   sunny   smile   with 

which Morn hails the world。              Beneath me all is quiet yet and calm�察�For 

the dim shadow of the silent night Still rests upon the valley�察�still the flock 

Sleeps undisturbed within the guarded fold�察�The lark yet slumbers in her 

lowly nest�察�The dew hangs heavy upon leaf and blade�察�The gray mist still 

o'erveils    the   unruffled    lake�察  �And    all  is  tranquil    as  an   infant's   sleep�察�

Tranquil around me�察�but not so within�察�For in my breast a thousand restless 

thoughts Conflict in wild�察�chaotical confusion。 Thoughts of long   bygone 

years�察  �and   things   that   were   But   are   no   more�察  �and   thoughts   that   sternly 

strive To grapple with the mysteries I late Have looked upon�察�for I�察�since 

yesternight�察�Have traversed the wide sea of space that rolls Between the 

shores   of   this   and   other   worlds�察  �Have   gazed   upon   and   scanned   those
