with pestilence。 

     Wealth�察�too�察�I coveted�察�And heaped its shining dust in hoards around 

me�察�And   yet   it   was   but   dust�察  �as   barren   of   Enjoyment   as   the   ground   we 

tread upon。 I clad myself in purpleheaped my board With all the fairest�察�

sweetest   fruits   of   earth�察�And   filled   my   golden   goblets   with   bright   juice�察�

Pressed from the goodliest grapes�察�and made my couch Of down�察�and yet�察�

I was most wretched still。 My garments were but cumbersome�察�my couch 

Could   give   no   rest�察  �and   e'en   my   generous   wines   Could   not   remove   the 

crushing   weight   that   sat�察  �Nightmare´like�察  �on   my   heart�察  �until   it   grew   A 

palpable and keenly aching pang。                There is�察�one path which yet remains 

untrod�察�To be my guide in it�察�I called thee hither�察�'Tis that of knowledge。 

     Spirit。 

     The same In which the mother of thy race was lost�察�With e'en a wiser�察�

mightier guide than I。 She thirsted�察�too�察�for knowledge�察�and she gave Her 

innocenceher home in Paradise The happiness of himwho shared her 

lot To knowwhat�拭�That her wn rebellious hand Had raised the flood´ 

gates of a sea of crime�察�Which would for ever pour its bitter waves Upon 

the helpless unprotected race�察�Which her rash deed had ruined。 Think of 

the sighsthe groansthe floods of tears The woestoo deep for these 

which   have no   end�察 �Save   but   in   heart´breaks� �Think upon   the  toil The 

sweatthe   painthe   strifethe   crimethe   blood   The   myriads   of   souls 

with which this one Sad lesson was obtained� �whose price is yet Not fully 

paid�察�nor shall be so�察�until The last poor son of earth mingles with dust� �

Dost thou not fear to tread a path like this�拭�

     Werner。 

     I   have   no   fear�察  �It   is   so   long   since   I   have   felt   its   thrill   That   'twere   a 

pleasure now to feel it。 

     Spirit。 

     What wouldst thou know�拭�Thou art familiar with all earthly lore。 More�此�

Thou      hast  gained�察   �and    wield'st   a  power�察    �to  which     The   rulers   of   the 

elements   do   bow�察  �The   hurricane�察  �at   thy   command   goes   forth�察  �Walking 

where'er thou bid'st it�察�and the storm Ceases to howl when thou hast said�察�

foundations   of   the     mountains�察  �And      shakes   them   with    its   strength�察 �the 

subtle   fire�察  �That   lights   the   tempest   on   its   gloomy   way�察  �Starts   from   its 

cloud´rocked slumber�察�at thy call�察�To be thy messenger。 Canst thou not be 

content when thou art feared By those who rule a world�拭�What is there yet 

Which      thy   insatiate   mind    desires   to   know�拭    �Would'st    learn   immortal 

mysteries�拭�Reflect Thou art but mortal。 

     Werner。 

     Spirit�察  �why   dost   thou   Taunt   me   with   my   mortality�拭   �Weak   things�察�

Brought   forth   from  earth�察─�Poor   simple   child   of   clay�察─�These   are   thy 

words�察  �when   well   thou  knows't   that   I�察�Though   bound   to   earth   by   bonds 

made of its mire�察�Am mightier than thou。 Were it not so�察�Thou would'st not 

now be face to face with one Of mortal birth。 Thou�察�too�察�canst feel revenge�察�

And knowest how to wreak it�察�but�察�take heed�察�The power which brought 

thee hither�察�can�察�and may  Deal harshly with thee。 If thou knowest   aught 

Worthy of an immortal mind to know�察�To which I have not pierced�察�reveal 

thy knowledge。 

     Spirit。 

     We may not tell the secrets of eternity�察�But I can show thee things thou 

hast   not   seen�察�And   they   may   profit   thee�察  �although   'twill   shake   Even   thy 

proud heart to look upon them。 Would'st see them�拭�

     Werner。 

     It is my wish。 

     Spirit。 

     Come then。 

     Werner。 

     Lead on�察�Although thy path be through hell's gloomy gate�察�I too will 

pass its portals at thy back。 Thou canst not enter where I dare not pass。 

     ��The cloud closes around them�察�and moves away�察�and a voice sings as 

it disappears。 

     To the region of shadow�察�The region of death�察�Where dust is a stranger�察�

And   life   has   no   breath�察  �Where   darkness   and   silence   Their   dim   shrouds 

have cast Round the phantoms of worlds That belong to the past�察�Spirits 

who sit on The thrones of the air�察�Guide ye our chariot�察�Waft ye us there。

       Act II。 

     The verge of Creation。 Enter Werner and Spirit。 

     Werner。 

     We    have    outtravelled    light   and   sound�此   �The   harmonies      that  pealed 

around us�察�as Through yon array of dim and distant worlds We winged our 

flight�察�have wholly died away�察�Or come to us so faintly echoed�察�that Our 

ears must watch and wait to catch them。 Those stars are now like watch´ 

fires�察  �which   though   seen   Blazing   afar�察  �send   not   their   light   to   make   The 

path    of   the  benighted     wanderer     More     plain   and   cheerful。    Before    us 

stretches   one vast   field   of  gloom�察 �So   dense   as to   appear  impenetrable�此�

Darkness�察�that has a body and a form�察�Both palpable to touch and sight�察�

across Our path a barrier rears that seems to bar Our farther progress。 If 

there   be�察  �beyond   This   wall   of   blackness�察  �aught   of   mystery�察 �What   power 

shall guide us to it�拭�

     Spirit。 

     Thy mind Which�察�from the influence of matter�察�free As it is now and 

shall   be   till   again   Though   art   returned   unto   thy   native   orb�察  �Is   its   own 

master�察�and its will is now Its only needed guide。 Strange things are hidden 

by that ebon veil�察�To which a single wish of thine may bear us。 

     Werner。 

     Then     let  us  on�此  �Since   we   our   search    for  knowledge      have    begun�察�

Wherever there is aught that Power has made�察�Which Time has ruined�察�or 

which Fate has damned�察�There let us go�察�that we may look on it�察�And learn 

its history。 What intense glooms We now are passing through� �I feel them 

part   Before�察  �and   close   behind   us�察  �as   we   fly�察�As   plainly   as   the   swimmer 

feels the waves That lave his gliding limbs。 This sure must be The home of 

Deathno voice�察�no sound�察�no sigh�察�Not ev'n so much of breath as would 

suffice To make a lily tremble� �

     Spirt。 

     Though say'st true�察�This is indeed the realm of Death��at least It has 

no more of life than what though hast Brought here with thee��I speak of 

mortal life�此�We now are near the Hades of past worlds�察�Whose spirits have

a   life   which    cannot   die。   You    laugh�   �and   show      the   haughty   arrogance 

Which   in   your   mortal   brethren   you   cotemn。             Think   you   that   he   who 

gave   to   man   his   mind�察�The   undying   spark   that   quickens   his   clay   frame�察�

Would      fashion     from    the   same    material     Such    mighty     wonders      as   the 

spheres which go Hymning around his everlasting throne� �Giving to them 

a beauty which alone Could be conceived by him�察�which has great hand 

Alone could mould into reality�察�And yet deny them what he gave to thee�察�

Intelligence�   �a   thing   that   knows   not   death�拭  �Hast   though   not   seen   thine 

earth put forth her leaves�察�Clothing her rugged mountain tops and sides�察�

Her   forests   in   the   vale�察  �each   tree   and   shrub�察  �With   a   fair   foliage�拭  �hast 

though not beheld Her weaving�察�in the sunny springtide hours�察�A fairy web 

of   emerald´bladed   grass   To   robe   her   valleys   in�拭  �With   every   flow'r   Of 

graceful   form�察  �and   soft   and   downy   leaf�察  �And   tender   hue�察  �and   tint�察  �that 

Beauty   owns�察  �To   deck   her   gentle   breast�拭  �When Autumn   came�察  �With   its 

rich   gifts   of   pleasant�察  �mellow   fruits�察  �Hast   though   not   seen   her   wipe   her 

sunburnt brow�察�And shake her yellow locks from every hill�拭�Hast though 

not   heard   her   holy   songs   of   peace And   plenty  warbled   from   each   vocal 

grove�察�And   murmured by  her   myriads of   streams�拭  �Hast though not  seen 

her�察�when the hollow winds�察�Which moan the requiem of the dying year�察�

Raved      through     her   leafless   bowers�察    �wrap     about    Her   breast    a  mantle�察�

wherewith   to   protect And   nurse   the seed�察  �the   trusting   husbandman   Hath 

given to her keeping�拭�Are thine acts As full of wisdom�察�and as free from 

blame�拭�If not�察�then why deny to her the life And spirit you possess�拭�

     Werner。 

     I  did   not   laugh   In   disbelief   of   what   thy  words   declare�察  �But   they  stir 

such strange thoughts within my mind�察�That�察�as I will not weep�察�I can but 

smile。   Methinks   the   darkness   has   grown   less   profound�察�A  heavy�察  �dim�察�

and shadowy light�察�like that Which�察�when the storm has chosen midnight's 

hour   Of   stilly   gloom�察  �to   hold   its   revel   in�察  �First   glimmers   through   the 

clouds   which   have   been   rent�察  �And   torn   by   their   own   fierceness�察  �hands 

about     us。     The     light   increases     still�察 �and   in  the   distance�察   �Enormous 

shadows�察�wearing distinct shapes�察�Since seemingly immovable�察�and others 

Like   mighty�察  �mastless�察 �sailless�察 �vessels�察 �moved   By  magic   o'er   a   tideless�察�
