where her fluttering silver pinions Follow the track of the crimson day。

     Is rest where cloudlets slowly creep察 And sobbing winds forget to

grieve察And quiet waters gently heave察As if they rocked the ship to sleep拭

Ah no that southern vapour white Will bring a tempest ere the night察And

thunder through the quiet Heaven察Lashing the sea in its angry might。

     The battle´field lies still and cold察While stars that watch in silent light

Gleam here and there on weapons bright察 In weary sleepers' slackened

hold察Nay察though they dream of no alarm察One bugle sound will stir that

calm察And all the strength of two great nations察Eager for battle察will rise

and arm。

     Pause where the Pilgrim's day is done察Where scrip and staff aside are

laid察And察resting in the silent shade察They watch the slowly sinking sun。

Ah no that worn and weary band Must journey long before they stand察

With bleeding feet察 and hearts rejoicing察 Kissing the dust of the Holy

Land。

     Then find a soul who meets at last A noble prize but hard to gain察Or

joy long pleaded for in vain察 Now sweeter for a bitter past。 Ah no for

Time can rob her yet察And even should cruel Time forget察Then Death will

come察and察unrelenting察Brand her with sorrowful long regret。

     Seek farther察farther yet察oh Dove Beyond the Land察beyond the Sea察

There shall be rest for thee and me察For thee and me and those I love。 I

heard a promise gently fall察I heard a far´off Shepherd call The weary and

the broken´hearted察Promising rest unto each and all。

     It is not marred by outward strife察 It is not lost in calm repose察 It

heedeth neither joys nor woes察Is not disturbed by death or life察Through察

and beyond them察lies our Rest此Then cease察oh Heart察thy longing quest

And thou察my Dove察with silver pinions Flutter again to thy quiet nest

         VERSE此                  THE TYRANT AND

                         THE CAPTIVE

    It was midnight when I listened察And I heard two Voices speak察One

was harsh察and stern察and cruel察And the other soft and weak此Yet I saw no

Vision enter察 And I heard no steps depart察 Of this Tyrant and his

Captive察 。 。 FATE it might be and a HEART。

    Thus the stern Voice spake in triumph此 ;I have shut your life away

From the radiant world of nature察And the perfumed light of day。 You察who

loved to steep your spirit In the charm of Earth's delight察See no glory of

the daytime察And no sweetness of the night。;

    But the soft Voice answered calmly此 Nay察for when the March winds

bring Just a whisper to my window察I can dream the rest of Spring察And to´

day I saw a Swallow Flitting past my prison bars察And my cell has just one

corner Whence at night I see the stars。;

    But its bitter taunt repeating察Cried the harsh Voice此 Where are they

´ All the friends of former hours察Who forget your name to´day拭All the

links of love are shattered察Which you thought so strong before察And your

very heart is lonely察And alone since loved no more。;

    But the low Voice spoke still lower此 ;Nay察I know the golden chain

Of my love is purer察stronger察For the cruel fire of pain此They remember

me no longer察But I察grieving here alone察Bind their souls to me for ever

By the love within their own。;

    But the Voice cried此 ;Once remember You devoted soul and mind To

the welfare of your brethren察And the service of your kind。 Now察 what

sorrow can you comfort拭You察who lie in helpless pain察With an impotent

compassion Fretting out your life in vain。;

     ;Nay察─and then the gentle answer Rose more loud察and full察and clear此

;For the sake of all my brethren I thank God that I am here Poor had been

my Life's best efforts察Now I waste no thought or breath ´ For the prayer of

those who suffer Has the strength of Love and Death。;

     Trust me察 no mere skill of subtle tracery察 No mere practice of a

dexterous hand察Will suffice察without a hidden spirit察That we may察or may

not察understand。

    And those quaint old fragments that are left us Have their power in

thisthe Carver brought Earnest care察 and reverent patience察 only

Worthily to clothe some noble thought。

     Shut then in the petals of the flowers察Round the stems of all the lilies

some thought divine。

     There may come some weary soul察o'erladen With perplexed struggle

some perpetual pain。

    And the tendrils will unroll察and teach him How to solve the problem

of his pain察And the birds' and angels' wings shake downward On his heart

a sweet and tender rain。

              VERSE此                 THREE ROSES

    Just when the red June Roses blow She gave me onea year ago。 A

Rose whose crimson breath revealed The secret that its heart concealed察

And whose half shy察half tender grace Blushed back upon the giver's face。

A year agoa year ago ´ To hope was not to know。

    Just when the red June Roses blow I plucked her onea month ago此

Its half´blown crimson to eclipse察I laid it on her smiling lips察The balmy

fragrance of the south Drew sweetness from her sweeter mouth。 Swiftly do

golden hours creep察 To hold is not to keep。

    The red June Roses now are past察This very day I broke the last ´ And

now its perfumed breath is hid察With her察beneath a coffin´lid察There will

its petals fall apart察And wither on her icy heart此 At three red Roses' cost

My world was gained and lost。

                                          I。

    You write and think of me察 my friend察 with pity察 While you are

basking in the light of Rome察Shut up within the heart of this great city察

Too busy and too poor to leave my home。

                                         II。

    You think my life debarred all rest or pleasure察Chained all day to my

ledger and my pen察Too sickly even to use my little leisure To bear me

from the strife and din of men。

                                         III。

    Well察it is true察yet察now the days are longer察At sunset I can lay my

writing down察And slowly crawl summer has made me stronger Just to

the nearest outskirt of the town。

                                         IV。

    There a wide Common察 blackened though and dreary With factory

smoke察spreads outward to the West察I lie down on the parched´up grass察if

from each great picture察one by one。
