TO THE RIGHT HONOURABLE HENRY WRIOTHESLEY察

EARL OF SOUHAMPTON察AND BARON OF TICHFIELD。

     RIGHT HONOURABLE察

I know not how I shall offend in dedicating my unpolished lines to

your lordship察nor how the world will censure me for choosing so strong a

prop to support so weak a burthen此only察if your honour seem but pleased察

I account myself highly praised察 and vow to take advantage of all idle

hours察till I have honoured you with some graver labour。 But if the first

heir of my invention prove deformed察 I shall be sorry it had so noble a

godfather察and never after ear so barren a land察for fear it yield me still so

bad a harvest。 I leave it to your honourable survey察 and your honour to

your heart's content察which I wish may always answer your own wish and

the world's hopeful expectation。

     Your honour's in all duty察

     WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE。

     VENUS AND ADONIS

EVEN as the sun with purple´colour'd face Had ta'en his last leave of

the weeping morn察Rose´cheek'd Adonis tried him to the chase察Hunting

he lov'd察but love he laugh'd to scorn察

Sick´thoughted Venus makes amain unto him察And like a bold´fac'd

suitor 'gins to woo him。

'Thrice fairer than myself' thus she began察 'The field's chief flower察

sweet above compare察

Stain to all nymphs察 more lovely than a man察 More white and red

than doves or roses are察Nature that made thee察with herself at strife察Saith

that the world hath ending with thy life。

'Vouchsafe察thou wonder察to alight thy steed察And rein his proud head

to the saddle´bow察If thou wilt deign this favour察for thy meed A thousand

honey secrets shalt thou know此

Here come and sit察 where never serpent hisses察 And being set察 I'll

smother thee with kisses此

'And yet not cloy thy lips with loath'd satiety察But rather famish them

amid their plenty察

Making them red and pale with fresh variety察Ten kisses short as one察

one long as twenty此A summer's day will seem an hour but short察Being

wasted in such time´beguiling sport。'

With this she seizeth on his sweating palm察The precedent of pith and

livelihood察And察trembling in her passion察calls it balm察Earth's sovereign

salve to do a goddess good此

Being so enrag'd察desire doth lend her force Courageously to pluck

him from his horse。

Over one arm the lusty courser's rein Under her other was the tender

boy察

Who blush'd and pouted in a dull disdain察With leaden appetite察unapt

                                            3

to toy察 She red and hot as coals of glowing fire He red for shame察 but

frosty in desire。

The studded bridle on a ragged bough Nimbly she fastensO how

quick is love此The steed is stalled up察and even now To tie the rider she

begins to prove此

Backward she push'd him察as she would be thrust察And govern'd him

in strength察though not in lust。

So soon was she along察as he was down察Each leaning on their elbows

and their hips此

Now doth she stroke his cheek察 now doth he frown察 And 'gins to

chide察 but soon she stops his lips察 And kissing speaks察 with lustful

language broken察'If thou wilt chide察thy lips shall never open。'

He burns with bashful shame察 she with her tears Doth quench the

maiden burning of his cheeks察Then with her windy sighs and golden hairs

To fan and blow them dry again she seeks此

He saith she is immodest察blames her miss察What follows more she

murders with a kiss。

Even as an empty eagle察sharp by fast察Tires with her beak on feathers察

flesh and bone察

Shaking her wings察devouring all in haste察Till either gorge be stuff'd

or prey be gone察 Even so she kiss'd his brow察 his cheek察 his chin察And

where she ends she doth anew begin。

Forc'd to content察but never to obey察Panting he lies察and breatheth in

her face察 She feedeth on the steam察 as on a prey察And calls it heavenly

moisture察air of grace察

Wishing her cheeks were gardens full of flowers So they were dewd

with such distilling showers。

Look how a bird lies tangled in a net察So fasten'd in her arms Adonis

lies察

Pure shame and aw'd resistance made him fret察 Which bred more

beauty in his angry eyes此Rain added to a river that is rank Perforce will

force it overflow the bank。

Still she entreats察and prettily entreats察For to a pretty ear she tunes

her tale察 Still is he sullen察 still he lours and frets察 'Twixt crimson shame

and anger ashy´pale察

Being red she loves him best察 and being white察 Her best is better'd

with a more delight。

Look how he can察 she cannot choose but love察 And by her fair

immortal hand she swears察

From his soft bosom never to remove察 Till he take truce with her

contending tears察Which long have rain'd察making her cheeks all wet察And

one sweet kiss shall pay this countless debt。

Upon this promise did he raise his chin

Like a dive´dapper peering through a wave察 Who察 being look'd on察

ducks as quickly in察So offers he to give what she did crave察

But when her lips were ready for his pay察He winks察and turns his lips

another way。

Never did passenger in summer's heat More thirst for drink than she

for this good turn。

Her help she sees察but help she cannot get察She bathes in water察yet

her fire must burn此'O pity' 'gan she cry察'flint´hearted boy此'Tis but a kiss I

beg察why art thou coy拭

'I have been woo'd察as I entreat thee now察Even by the stern and direful

god of war察 Whose sinewy neck in battle ne'er did bow察 Who conquers

where he comes m every jar察

Yet hath he been my captive and my slave察And begg'd for that which

thou unask'd shalt have。

'Over my altars hath he hung his lance察 His batter'd shield察 his

uncontrolled crest察

And for my sake hath learn'd to sport and dance To toy察to wanton察

dally察smile察and jest察Scorning his churlish drum and ensign red Making

my arms his field察his tent my bed。

       'Thus he that overrul'd I oversway'd察Leading him prisoner in a red´

rose chain此Strong´temper'd steel his stronger strength obey'd察Yet was he

servile to my coy disdain。

O be not proud察 nor brag not of thy might察 For mastering her that

foil'd the god of fight。

Touch but my lips with those falr lips of thine察Though mine be not

The kiss shall be thine own as well as mine此What seest thou in the

ground拭hold up thy head此Look in mine eyeballs察there thy beauty lies察

Then why not lips on lips察since eyes in eyes拭

'Art thou asham'd to kiss拭then wink again察And I will wink察so shall

the day seem night察Love keeps his revels where there are but twain察Be

These blue´vein'd violets whereon we lean Never can blab察nor know

not what we mean。

'The tender spring upon thy tempting lip

Shows thee unripe察yet mayst thou well be tasted此Make use of time察

'Thou canst not see one winkle in my brow察

Mine eyes are grey and bright察and quick in turning察My beauty as the

spring doth yearly grow察My flesh is soft and plump察my marrow burning察

My smooth moist hand察 were it with thy hand felt。 Would in thy palm

'Bid me discourse察I will enchant thine ear察Or like a fairy察trip upon

the green察Or察like a nymph察with long dishevell'd hair察Dance on the sands察

and yet no footing seen此

Love is a spirit all compact of fire察Not gross to sink察but light察and

will aspire。

'Witness this primrose bank whereon I lie察

These forceless flowers like sturdy trees support me察 Two

strengthless doves will draw me through the sky察 From morn till night察

even where I list to sport me此Is love so light察sweet boy察and may it be
