being early pluck'd is sour to taste。
'Look the world's comforter察with weary gait His day's hot task hath
ended in the west察The owl察night's herald察shrieks察'tis very late察The sheep
are gone to fold察birds to their nest察
And coal´black clouds that shadow heaven's light Do summon us to
part察and bid good night。
'Now let me say good night察and so say you察If you will say so察you
shall have a kiss。'
'Good night' quoth she察 and ere he says adieu察 The honey fee of
parting tender'd is此 Her arms do lend his neck a sweet embrace察
Incorporate then they seem察face grows to face。
Till察 breathless察 he disjoin'd察 and backward drew The heavenly
moisture察 that sweet coral mouth察 Whose precious taste her thirsty lips
well knew察Whereon they surfeit察yet complain on drouth此
He with her plenty press'd察she faint with dearth察Their lips together
glu'd察fall to the earth。
Now quick desire hath caught the yielding prey察And glutton´like she
feeds察yet never filleth察
Her lips are conquerors察 his lips obey察 Paying what ransom the
insulter willeth察Whose vulture thought doth pitch the price so high察That
she will draw his lips' rich treasure dry。
And having felt the sweetness of the spoil察 With blindfold fury she
begins to forage察Her face doth reek and smoke察her blood doth boil察And
careless lust stirs up a desperate courage察
Planting oblivion察beating reason back察Forgetting shame's pure blush
and honour's wrack。
Hot察faint察and weary察with her hard embracing察Like a wild bird being
tam'd with too much handling察 Or as the fleet´foot roe that's tir'd with
chasing察
Or like the froward infant still'd with dandling察He now obeys察and
now no more resisteth察While she takes all she can察not all she listeth。

What wax so frozen but dissolves with tempering察And yields at last to
every light impression拭 Things out of hope are compass'd oft with
venturing察Chiefly in love察whose leave exceeds commission此
Affection faints not like a pale´fac'd coward察 But then woos best
when most his choice is froward。
When he did frown察O had she then gave over察Such nectar from his
lips she had not suck'd。
Foul words and frowns must not repel a lover察What though the rose
have prickles察yet 'tis pluck'd此Were beauty under twenty locks kept fast察
Yet love breaks through and picks them all at last。
For pity now she can no more detain him察
The poor fool prays her that he may depart此She is resolv'd no longer
to restrain him察Bids him farewell察and look well to her heart察
The which察 by Cupid's bow she doth protest察 He carries thence
incaged in his breast。
'Sweet boy' she says察'this night I'll waste in sorrow察For my sick heart
commands mine eyes to watch。
Tell me察Love's master察shall we meet to´morrow Say察shall we拭shall
we拭wilt thou make the match' He tells her察no察to´morrow he intends To
hunt the boar with certain of his friends。
'The boar' quoth she察whereat a sudden pale察Like lawn being spread
upon the blushing rose察Usurps her cheeks察she trembles at his tale察And on
his neck her yoking arms she throws此
She sinketh down察still hanging by his neck察He on her belly falls察she
on her back。
Now is she in the very lists of love察Her champion mounted for the hot
encounter此
All is imaginary she doth prove察He will not manage her察although he
mount her察That worse than Tantalus' is her annoy察To clip Elysium and to
lack her joy。
Even as poor birds察deceiv'd with painted grapes察Do surfeit by the eye
and pine the maw察Even so she languisheth in her mishaps察As those poor
birds that helpless berries saw。
The warm effects which she in him finds missing察She seeks to kindle

with continual kissing。
But all in vain察good queen察it will not be此She hath assay'd as much as
may be prov'd察
Her pleading hath deserv'd a greater fee察She's Love察she loves察and
yet she is not lov'd。 'Fie察fie' he says察'you crush me察let me go察You have
no reason to withhold me so。'
'Thou hadst been gone' quoth she察'sweet boy察ere this察But that thou
told'st me thou wouldst hunt the boar。 O be advis'd察thou know'st not what
it is With javelin's point a churlish swine to gore察
Whose tushes never sheath'd he whetteth still察 Like to a mortal
butcher察bent to kill。
'On his bow´back he hath a battle set Of bristly pikes察that ever threat
his foes察
His eyes like glow´worms shine when he doth fret察 His snout digs
sepulchres where'er he goes察Being mov'd察he strikes whate'er is in his way察
And whom he strikes his crooked tushes slay。
'His brawny sides察with hairy bristles arm'd察Are better proof than thy
spear's point can enter察 His short thick neck cannot be easily harm'd察
Being ireful察on the lion he will venture此
The thorny brambles and embracing bushes察As fearful of him察part察
through whom he rushes。
'Alas he nought esteems that face of thine察To which Love's eyes pay
tributary gazes察
Nor thy soft hands察 sweet lips察 and crystal eyne察 Whose full
perfection all the world amazes察 But having thee at vantage察 wondrous
dread Would root these beauties as he roots the mead。
'O let him keep his loathsome cabin still察
Beauty hath nought to do with such foul fiends此Come not within his
danger by thy will察 They that thrive well take counsel of their friends。
When thou didst name the boar察not to dissemble察I fear'd thy fortune察and
my joints did tremble。
'Didst thou not mark my face拭was it not white拭Saw'st thou not signs
of fear lurk in mine eye拭
Grew I not faint拭 And fell I not downright拭 Within my bosom察

whereon thou dost lie察My boding heart pants察beats察and takes no rest察But察
like an earthquake察shakes thee on my breast。
'For where Love reigns察disturbing Jealousy
Doth call himself Affection's sentinel察Gives false alarms察suggesteth
mutiny察And in a peaceful hour doth cry ;Kill察kill ─
Distempering gentle Love in his desire察As air and water do abate the
fire。
'This sour informer察 this bate´breeding spy察 This canker that eats up
Love's tender spring察
This carry´tale察 dissentious Jealousy察 That sometime true news察
sometime false doth bring察Knocks at my heart察and whispers in mine ear
That if I love thee察I thy death should fear此
'And more than so察 presenteth to mine eye The picture of an angry´
chafing boar察Under whose sharp fangs on his back doth lie An image like
thyself察all stain'd with gore察
Whose blood upon the fresh flowers being shed Doth make them
droop with grief and hang the head。
'What should I do察 seeing thee so indeed察 That tremble at the
imagination拭
The thought of it doth make my faint heart bleed察And fear doth teach
it divination此 I prophesy thy death察 my living sorrow察 If thou encounter
with the boar to´morrow。
'But if thou needs wilt hunt察be rul'd by me察Uncouple at the timorous
flying hare察Or at the fox which lives by subtilty察Or at the roe which no
encounter dare此
Pursue these fearful creatures o'er the downs察 And on thy well´
breath'd horse keep with thy hound。
'And when thou hast on foot the purblind hare察Mark the poor wretch察
to overshoot his troubles
How he outruns the winds察and with what care He cranks and crosses
with a thousand doubles此The many musits through the which he goes Are
like a labyrinth to amaze his foes。
'Sometime he runs among a flock of sheep察 To make the cunning
hounds mistake their smell察 And sometime where earth´delving conies

keep察To stop the loud pursuers in their yell察
And sometime sorteth with a herd of deer察Danger deviseth shifts察wit
waits on fear此
'For there his smell with others being mingled察
The hot scent´snuffing hounds are driven to doubt察 Ceasing their
clamorous cry till they have singled With much ado the cold fault cleanly
out察Then do they spend their mouths此Echo replies察As if another chase
were in the skies。
'By this察poor Wat察far off upon a hill察Stands on his hinder legs with
listening ear察 To hearken if his foes pursue him still此 Anon their loud
alarums he doth hear察
And now his grief may be compared well To one sore sick that hears
the passing bell。
'Then shalt thou see the dew´bedabbled wretch Turn察 and return察
indenting with the way察
Each envious briar his weary legs doth scratch察Each shadow makes
him stop察each murmur stay此For misery is trodden on by many察And being
low never reliev'd by any。
'Lie quietly察and hear a little more察Nay察do not struggle察for thou shalt
not rise此To make thee hate the hunting of the boar察 Unlike myself thou
hear'st me moralize察
Applying this to that察and so to so察For lov
