THE GOVERNOR。 BeckoningАCome out here a minute察Clipton。
CLIPTON察with a sort of dreadful quietness察comes into the corridor察the needle and thread in his hand。 The GOVERNOR signs to WOODER察who goes into the cell and inspects it carefully。
THE GOVERNOR。 How are your eyes
CLIFTON。 I don't complain of them。 I don't see the sun here。 He makes a stealthy movement察protruding his neck a littleА There's just one thing察Mr。 Governor察as you're speaking to me。 I wish you'd ask the cove next door here to keep a bit quieter。
THE GOVERNOR。 What's the matter拭 I don't want any tales察Clipton。
CLIPTON。 He keeps me awake。 I don't know who he is。 With contemptА One of this star class察I expect。 Oughtn't to be here with us。
THE GOVERNOR。 QuietlyА Quite right察Clipton。 He'll be moved when there's a cell vacant。
CLIPTON。 He knocks about like a wild beast in the early morning。 I'm not used to itstops me getting my sleep out。 In the evening too。 It's not fair察Mr。 Governor察as you're speaking to me。 Sleep's the comfort I've got here察I'm entitled to take it out full。
WOODER comes out of the cell察and instantly察as though extinguished察CLIPTON moves with stealthy suddenness back into his cell。
WOODER。 All right察sir。
THE GOVERNOR nods。 The door is closed and locked。
THE GOVERNOR。 Which is the man who banged on his door this morning
WOODER。 Going towards O'CLEARY'S cellА This one察sir察O'Cleary。
He lifts the disc and glances through the peephole。
THE GOVERNOR。 Open。
WOODER throws open the door。 O'CLEARY察who is seated at a little table by the door as if listening察springs up and stands at attention jest inside the doorway。 He is a broad´faced察 middle´aged man察with a wide察thin察flexible mouth察and little holes under his high cheek´bones。
THE GOVERNOR。 Where's the joke察O'Cleary
O'CLEARY。 The joke察your honour拭 I've not seen one for a long time。
THE GOVERNOR。 Banging on your door
O'CLEARY。 Oh that
THE GOVERNOR。 It's womanish。
O'CLEARY。 An' it's that I'm becoming this two months past。
THE GOVERNOR。 Anything to complain of
O'CLEARY。 NO察Sirr。
THE GOVERNOR。 You're an old hand察you ought to know better。
O'CLEARY。 Yes察I've been through it all。
THE GOVERNOR。 You've got a youngster next door察you'll upset him。
O'CLEARY。 It cam' over me察your honour。 I can't always be the same steady man。
THE GOVERNOR。 Work all right
O'CLEARY。 Taking up a rush mat he is makingА Oh I can do it on me head。 It's the miserablest stuffdon't take the brains of a mouse。 Working his mouthА It's here I feel itthe want of a little noise a terrible little wud ease me。
THE GOVERNOR。 You know as well as I do that if you were out in the shops you wouldn't be allowed to talk。
O'CLEARY。 With a look of profound meaningА Not with my mouth。
THE GOVERNOR。 Well察then
O'CLEARY。 But it's the great conversation I'd have。
THE GOVERNOR。 With a smileАWell察no more conversation on your door。
O'CLEARY。 No察sirr察I wud not have the little wit to repeat meself。
THE GOVERNOR。 TurningА Good´night。
O'CLEARY。 Good´night察your honour。
He turns into his cell。 The GOVERNOR shuts the door。
THE GOVERNOR。 Looking at the record cardА Can't help liking the poor blackguard。
WOODER。 He's an amiable man察sir。
THE GOVERNOR。 Pointing down the corridorАAsk the doctor to come here察Mr。 Wooder。
WOODER salutes and goes away down the corridor。
The GOVERNOR goes to the door of FALDER'S cell。 He raises his uninjured hand to uncover the peep´hole察but察without uncovering it察shakes his head and drops his hand察then察after scrutinising the record board察he opens the cell door。 FALDER察who is standing against it察lurches forward。
THE GOVERNOR。 Beckoning him outА Now tell me此can't you settle down察Falder
FALDER。 In a breathless voiceА Yes察sir。
THE GOVERNOR。 You know what I mean拭 It's no good running your head against a stone wall察is it
FALDER。 No察sir。
THE GOVERNOR。 Well察come。
FALDER。 I try察sir。
THE GOVERNOR。 Can't you sleep
FALDER。 Very little。 Between two o'clock and getting up's the worst time。
THE GOVERNOR。 How's that
FALDER。 His lips twitch with a sort of smileАI don't know察sir。 I was always nervous。 Suddenly volubleА Everything seems to get such a size then。 I feel I'll never get out as long as I live。
THE GOVERNOR。 That's morbid察my lad。 Pull yourself together。
FALDER。 With an equally sudden dogged resentmentАYesI've got to。
THE GOVERNOR。 Think of all these other fellows
FALDER。 They're used to it。
THE GOVERNOR。 They all had to go through it once for the first time察just as you're doing now。
FALDER。 Yes察sir察I shall get to be like them in time察I suppose。
THE GOVERNOR。 Rather taken abackА H'm Well That rests with you。 Now come。 Set your mind to it察like a good fellow。 You're still quite young。 A man can make himself what he likes。
FALDER。 WistfullyАYes察sir。
THE GOVERNOR。 Take a good hold of yourself。 Do you read
FALDER。 I don't take the words in。 Hanging his headАI know it's no good察but I can't help thinking of what's going on outside。 In my cell I can't see out at all。 It's thick glass察sir。
THE GOVERNOR。 You've had a visitor。 Bad news
FALDER。 Yes。
THE GOVERNOR。 You mustn't think about it。
FALDER。 Looking back at his cellА How can I help it察sir
He suddenly becomes motionless as WOODER and the DOCTOR approach。 The GOVERNOR motions to him to go back into his cell。
FALDER。 Quick and lowА I'm quite right in my head察sir。 He goes back into his cell。
THE GOVERNOR。 To the DOCTORА Just go in and see him察Clements。
The DOCTOR goes into the cell。 The GOVERNOR pushes the door to察 nearly closing it察and walks towards the window。
WOODER。 FollowingА Sorry you should be troubled like this察sir。 Very contented lot of men察on the whole。
THE GOVERNOR。 ShortlyА You think so
WOODER。 Yes察sir。 It's Christmas doing it察in my opinion。
THE GOVERNOR。 To himselfА Queer察that
WOODER。 Beg pardon察sir
THE GOVERNOR。 Christmas
He turns towards the window察leaving WOODER looking at him with a sort of pained anxiety。
WOODER。 SuddenlyА Do you think we make show enough察sir拭 If you'd like us to have more holly
THE GOVERNOR。 Not at all察Mr。 Wooder。
WOODER。 Very good察sir。
The DOCTOR has come out of FALDER's Cell察and the GOVERNOR beckons to him。
THE GOVERNOR。 Well
THE DOCTOR。 I can't make anything much of him。 He's nervous察of course。
THE GOVERNOR。 Is there any sort of case to report拭 Quite frankly察Doctor。
THE DOCTOR。 Well察I don't think the separates doing him any good察but then I could say the same of a lot of themthey'd get on better in the shops察there's no doubt。
THE GOVERNOR。 You mean you'd have to recommend others
THE DOCTOR。 A dozen at least。 It's on his nerves。 There's nothing tangible。 That fellow there pointing to O'CLEARY'S cellВ察for instancefeels it just as much察in his way。 If I once get away from physical factsI shan't know where I am。 Conscientiously察sir察I don't know how to differentiate him。 He hasn't lost weight。 Nothing wrong with his eyes。 His pulse is good。 Talks all right。
THE GOVERNOR。 It doesn't amount to melancholia
THE DOCTOR。 Shaking his headА I can report on him if you like察but if I do I ought to report on others。
THE GOVERNOR。 I see。 Looking towards FALDER'S cellА The poor devil must just stick it then。
As he says thin he looks absently at WOODER。
WOODER。 Beg pardon察sir
For answer the GOVERNOR stares at him察turns on his heel察and walks away。 There is a sound as of beating on metal。
THE GOVERNOR。 StoppingА Mr。 Wooder
WOODER。 Banging on his door察sir。 I thought we should have more of that。
He hurries forward察passing the GOVERNOR察who follows closely。
The curtain falls。
SCENE III
FALDER's cell察a whitewashed space thirteen feet broad by seven deep察and nine feet high察with a rounded ceiling。 The floor is of shiny blackened bricks。 The barred window of opaque glass察 with a ventilator察is high up in the middle of the end wall。 In the middle of the opposite end wall is the narrow door。 In a corner are the mattress and bedding rolled up two blankets察two sheets察and a coverletА Above them is a quarter´circular wooden shelf察on which is a Bible and several little devotional books察piled in a symmetrical pyramid察there are also a black hair brush察tooth´brush察and a bit of soap。 In another corner is the wooden frame of a bed察standing on end。 There is a dark ventilator under the window察and another over the door。 FALDER'S work a shirt to which he is putting buttonholesАis hung to a nail on the wall over a small wooden table察on which the novel ;Lorna Doone; lies open。 Low down in the corner by the door is a thick glass screen察about a foot square察covering the gas´jet let into the wall。 There is also a wooden stool察and a pair of shoes beneath it。 Three bright round tins are set under the window。
In fast´failing daylight察FALDER察in his stockings察is seen standing motionless察with his head inclined towards the door察 listening。 He moves a little closer to the door察his stockinged feet making no noise。 He stops at the door。 He is trying harder and harder to hear something察any little thing that is going on outside。 He springs suddenly uprightas if at a sound´and remains perfectly motionless。 Then察with a heavy sigh察he moves to his work察and stands looking at it察with his head doom察he does a stitch or two察having the air of a man so lost in sadness that each stitch is察as it were察a coming to life。 Then turning abruptly察he begins pacing the cell察moving his head察like an animal pacing its cage。 He stops again at the door察listens察and察placing
