ROMEO AND JULIET
SCENE III。 Verona。 A churchyard察in it the
monument of the Capulets。
Enter Paris and his Page with flowers and a torchА
Par。 Give me thy torch察boy。 Hence察and stand aloof。 Yet put it out察for
I would not be seen。 Under yond yew tree lay thee all along察Holding thine
ear close to the hollow ground。 So shall no foot upon the churchyard tread
Being loose察 unfirm察 with digging up of graves But thou shalt hear it。
Whistle then to me察As signal that thou hear'st something approach。 Give
me those flowers。 Do as I bid thee察go。 Page。 asideАI am almost afraid to
stand alone Here in the churchyard察 yet I will adventure。 Retires。А Par。
Sweet flower察with flowers thy bridal bed I strew O woe thy canopy is
dust and stones Which with sweet water nightly I will dew察Or察wanting
that察with tears distill'd by moans。 The obsequies that I for thee will keep
Nightly shall be to strew察thy grave and weep。 Whistle Boy。 The boy gives
warning something doth approach。 What cursed foot wanders this way to´
night To cross my obsequies and true love's rite拭 What察 with a torch拭
Muffle me察night察awhile。 Retires。А
Enter Romeo察and Balthasar with a torch察a mattock察and a crow of
iron。
Rom。 Give me that mattock and the wrenching iron。 Hold察take this
letter。 Early in the morning See thou deliver it to my lord and father。 Give
me the light。 Upon thy life I charge thee察Whate'er thou hearest or seest察
stand all aloof And do not interrupt me in my course。 Why I descend into
this bed of death Is partly to behold my lady's face察 But chiefly to take
thence from her dead finger A precious ring´ a ring that I must use In dear
employment。 Therefore hence察be gone。 But if thou察jealous察dost return to
pry In what I farther shall intend to do察By heaven察I will tear thee joint by
joint And strew this hungry churchyard with thy limbs。 The time and my
intents are savage´wild察More fierce and more inexorable far Than empty
tigers or the roaring sea。 Bal。 I will be gone察sir察and not trouble you。 Rom。
So shalt thou show me friendship。 Take thou that。 Live察and be prosperous察
and farewell察 good fellow。 Bal。 asideА For all this same察 I'll hide me

hereabout。 His looks I fear察and his intents I doubt。 Retires。АRom。 Thou
detestable maw察thou womb of death察Gorg'd with the dearest morsel of the
earth察Thus I enforce thy rotten jaws to open察And in despite I'll cram thee
with more food。 Romeo opens the tomb。 Par。 This is that banish'd haughty
Montague That murd'red my love's cousin´ with which grief It is supposed
the fair creature died´ And here is come to do some villanous shame To the
dead bodies。 I will apprehend him。 Stop thy unhallowed toil察 vile
Montague Can vengeance be pursu'd further than death拭 Condemned
villain察 I do apprehend thee。 Obey察 and go with me察 for thou must die。
Rom。 I must indeed察and therefore came I hither。 Good gentle youth察tempt
not a desp'rate man。 Fly hence and leave me。 Think upon these gone察Let
them affright thee。 I beseech thee察 youth察 But not another sin upon my
head By urging me to fury。 O察be gone By heaven察I love thee better than
myself察For I come hither arm'd against myself。 Stay not察be gone。 Live察
and hereafter say A madman's mercy bid thee run away。 Par。 I do defy thy察
conjuration And apprehend thee for a felon here。 Rom。 Wilt thou provoke
me拭Then have at thee察boy They fight。 Page。 O Lord察they fight I will go
call the watch。 Exit。 Paris falls。АPar。 O察I am slain If thou be merciful察
Open the tomb察lay me with Juliet。 Dies。АRom。 In faith察I will。 Let me
peruse this face。 Mercutio's kinsman察noble County Paris What said my
man when my betossed soul Did not attend him as we rode拭I think He
told me Paris should have married Juliet。 Said he not so拭or did I dream it
so拭Or am I mad察hearing him talk of Juliet To think it was so拭O察give me
thy hand察One writ with me in sour misfortune's book I'll bury thee in a
triumphant grave。 A grave拭O察no察a lanthorn察slaught'red youth察For here
lies Juliet察and her beauty makes This vault a feasting presence full of light。
Death察lie thou there察by a dead man interr'd。 Lays him in the tomb。АHow
oft when men are at the point of death Have they been merry which their
keepers call A lightning before death。 O察how may I Call this a lightning拭
O my love my wife Death察that hath suck'd the honey of thy breath察Hath
had no power yet upon thy beauty。 Thou art not conquer'd。 Beauty's ensign
yet Is crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks察And death's pale flag is not
advanced there。 Tybalt察liest thou there in thy bloody sheet拭O察what more
favour can I do to thee Than with that hand that cut thy youth in twain To

sunder his that was thine enemy拭 Forgive me察 cousin。' Ah察 dear Juliet察
Why art thou yet so fair拭 Shall I believe That unsubstantial Death is
amorous察And that the lean abhorred monster keeps Thee here in dark to
be his paramour拭For fear of that I still will stay with thee And never from
this palace of dim night Depart again。 Here察 here will I remain With
worms that are thy chambermaids。 O察 here Will I set up my everlasting
rest And shake the yoke of inauspicious stars From this world´wearied
flesh。 Eyes察look your last Arms察take your last embrace and察lips察O you
The doors of breath察 seal with a righteous kiss A dateless bargain to
engrossing death Come察 bitter conduct察 come察 unsavoury guide Thou
desperate pilot察now at once run on The dashing rocks thy seasick weary
bark Here's to my love 。Drinks。АO true apothecary Thy drugs are quick。
Thus with a kiss I die。 Falls。
Enter Friar LaurenceВ察with lanthorn察crow察and spade。
Friar。 Saint Francis be my speed how oft to´night Have my old feet
stumbled at graves Who's there拭Bal。 Here's one察a friend察and one that
knows you well。 Friar。 Bliss be upon you Tell me察good my friend察What
torch is yond that vainly lends his light To grubs and eyeless skulls拭As I
discern察It burneth in the Capels' monument。 Bal。 It doth so察holy sir察and
there's my master察One that you love。 Friar。 Who is it拭Bal。 Romeo。 Friar。
How long hath he been there拭Bal。 Full half an hour。 Friar。 Go with me to
the vault。 Bal。 I dare not察sir。 My master knows not but I am gone hence察
And fearfully did menace me with death If I did stay to look on his intents。
Friar。 Stay then察I'll go alone。 Fear comes upon me。 O察much I fear some ill
unthrifty thing。 Bal。 As I did sleep under this yew tree here察I dreamt my
master and another fought察And that my master slew him。 Friar。 Romeo
Alack察 alack察 what blood is this which stains The stony entrance of this
sepulchre拭What mean these masterless and gory swords To lie discolour'd
by this place of peace拭 。Enters the tomb。А Romeo O察 pale Who else拭
What察Paris too拭And steep'd in blood拭Ah察what an unkind hour Is guilty
of this lamentable chance The lady stirs。 Juliet rises。 Jul。 O comfortable
friar where is my lord拭I do remember well where I should be察And there I
am。 Where is my Romeo拭Friar。 I hear some noise。 Lady察come from that
nest Of death察contagion察and unnatural sleep。 A greater power than we can

contradict Hath thwarted our intents。 Come察come away。 Thy husband in
thy bosom there lies dead察 And Paris too。 Come察 I'll dispose of thee
Among a sisterhood of holy nuns。 Stay not to question察for the watch is
coming。 Come察 go察 good Juliet。 I dare no longer stay。 Jul。 Go察 get thee
hence察for I will not away。 Exit FriarА What's here拭A cup察clos'd in my
true love's hand拭Poison察I see察hath been his timeless end。 O churl drunk
all察and left no friendly drop To help me after拭I will kiss thy lips。 Haply
some poison yet doth hang on them To make me die with a restorative。
Kisses him。АThy lips are warm Chief Watch。 withinАLead察boy。 Which

Enter Paris'sАBoy and Watch。
Boy。 This is the place。 There察where the torch doth burn。 Chief Watch。
'the ground is bloody。 Search about the churchyard。 Go察 some of you察

Raise up the Montagues察some others search。 Exeunt others of the Watch。А
We see the ground whereon these woes do lie察But the true ground of all
these piteous woes We cannot without circumstance descry。
Enter some of the Watch撮Аwith Romeo's Man BalthasarА
2。 Watch。 Here's Romeo's man。 We found him in the churchyard。
