repose and rest Come to thy heart as that within my breast Rom。 O察wilt
thou leave me so unsatisfied拭 Jul。 What satisfaction canst thou have to´
night拭Rom。 Th' exchange of thy love's faithful vow for mine。 Jul。 I gave
thee mine before thou didst request it察And yet I would it were to give
again。 Rom。 Would'st thou withdraw it拭For what purpose察love拭Jul。 But
to be frank and give it thee again。 And yet I wish but for the thing I have。
My bounty is as boundless as the sea察My love as deep察the more I give to
thee察The more I have察for both are infinite。 I hear some noise within。 Dear
love察adieu 。NurseАcalls within。 Anon察good nurse Sweet Montague察be
true。 Stay but a little察I will come again。 Exit。АRom。 O blessed察blessed
night I am afeard察Being in night察all this is but a dream察Too flattering´
sweet to be substantial。
Enter Juliet above。
Jul。 Three words察dear Romeo察and good night indeed。 If that thy bent
of love be honourable察Thy purpose marriage察send me word to´morrow察
By one that I'll procure to come to thee察Where and what time thou wilt
perform the rite察And all my fortunes at thy foot I'll lay And follow thee
my lord throughout the world。 Nurse。 within Madam Jul。 I come察anon。´
But if thou meanest not well察I do beseech thee´ Nurse。 within Madam
Jul。 By´and´by I come。´ To cease thy suit and leave me to my grief。 To´
morrow will I send。 Rom。 So thrive my soul´ Jul。 A thousand times good
night Exit。 Rom。 A thousand times the worse察 to want thy light Love
goes toward love as schoolboys from their books察 But love from love察

towards school with heavy looks。
Enter Juliet again察。aboveА
Jul。 Hist Romeo察 hist O for a falconer's voice To lure this tassel´
gentle back again Bondage is hoarse and may not speak aloud察 Else
would I tear the cave where Echo lies察And make her airy tongue more
hoarse than mine With repetition of my Romeo's name。 Romeo Rom。 It is
my soul that calls upon my name。 How silver´sweet sound lovers' tongues
by night察Like softest music to attending ears Jul。 Romeo Rom。 My dear拭
Jul。 At what o'clock to´morrow Shall I send to thee拭Rom。 By the hour of
nine。 Jul。 I will not fail。 'Tis twenty years till then。 I have forgot why I did
call thee back。 Rom。 Let me stand here till thou remember it。 Jul。 I shall
forget察to have thee still stand there察Rememb'ring how I love thy company。
Rom。 And I'll still stay察to have thee still forget察Forgetting any other home
but this。 Jul。 'Tis almost morning。 I would have thee gone´ And yet no
farther than a wanton's bird察That lets it hop a little from her hand察Like a
poor prisoner in his twisted gyves察And with a silk thread plucks it back
again察So loving´jealous of his liberty。 Rom。 I would I were thy bird。 Jul。
Sweet察so would I。 Yet I should kill thee with much cherishing。 Good night察
good night Parting is such sweet sorrow察That I shall say good night till it
be morrow。 Exit。АRom。 Sleep dwell upon thine eyes察peace in thy breast
Would I were sleep and peace察so sweet to rest Hence will I to my ghostly
father's cell察His help to crave and my dear hap to tell。 Exit

SCENE III。 Friar Laurence's cell。
Enter Friar察。LaurenceАalone察with a basket。
Friar。 The grey´ey'd morn smiles on the frowning night察 Check'ring
the Eastern clouds with streaks of light察 And flecked darkness like a
drunkard reels From forth day's path and Titan's fiery wheels。 Non察ere the
sun advance his burning eye The day to cheer and night's dank dew to dry察
I must up´fill this osier cage of ours With baleful weeds and precious´
juiced flowers。 The earth that's nature's mother is her tomb。 What is her
burying gave察 that is her womb察And from her womb children of divers
kind We sucking on her natural bosom find察 Many for many virtues
excellent察 None but for some察 and yet all different。 O察 mickle is the
powerful grace that lies In plants察herbs察stones察 and their true qualities察
For naught so vile that on the earth doth live But to the earth some special
good doth give察Nor aught so good but察strain'd from that fair use察Revolts
from true birth察 stumbling on abuse。 Virtue itself turns vice察 being
misapplied察 And vice sometime's by action dignified。 Within the infant
rind of this small flower Poison hath residence察and medicine power察For
this察being smelt察 with that part cheers each part察 Being tasted察 slays all
senses with the heart。 Two such opposed kings encamp them still In man
as well as herbs´ grace and rude will察 And where the worser is
predominant察Full soon the canker death eats up that plant。
Enter Romeo。
Rom。 Good morrow察father。 Friar。 Benedicite What early tongue so
sweet saluteth me拭Young son察it argues a distempered head So soon to bid
good morrow to thy bed。 Care keeps his watch in every old man's eye察
And where care lodges sleep will never lie察 But where unbruised youth
with unstuff'd brain Doth couch his limbs察there golden sleep doth reign。
Therefore thy earliness doth me assure Thou art uprous'd with some
distemp'rature察Or if not so察then here I hit it right´ Our Romeo hath not
been in bed to´night。 Rom。 That last is true´the sweeter rest was mine。
Friar。 God pardon sin Wast thou with Rosaline拭Rom。 With Rosaline察my
ghostly father拭 No。 I have forgot that name察and that name's woe。 Friar。
That's my good son But where hast thou been then拭Rom。 I'll tell thee ere

thou ask it me again。 I have been feasting with mine enemy察Where on a
sudden one hath wounded me That's by me wounded。 Both our remedies
Within thy help and holy physic lies。 I bear no hatred察blessed man察for察lo察
My intercession likewise steads my foe。 Friar。 Be plain察 good son察 and
homely in thy drift Riddling confession finds but riddling shrift。 Rom。
Then plainly know my heart's dear love is set On the fair daughter of rich
Capulet察As mine on hers察so hers is set on mine察And all combin'd察save
what thou must combine By holy marriage。 When察 and where察 and how
We met察we woo'd察and made exchange of vow察I'll tell thee as we pass察
but this I pray察 That thou consent to marry us to´day。 Friar。 Holy Saint
Francis What a change is here Is Rosaline察that thou didst love so dear察
So soon forsaken拭Young men's love then lies Not truly in their hearts察but
in their eyes。 Jesu Maria What a deal of brine Hath wash'd thy sallow
cheeks for Rosaline How much salt water thrown away in waste察 To
season love察 that of it doth not taste The sun not yet thy sighs from
heaven clears察Thy old groans ring yet in mine ancient ears。 Lo察here upon
thy cheek the stain doth sit Of an old tear that is not wash'd off yet。 If e'er
thou wast thyself察and these woes thine察Thou and these woes were all for
Rosaline。 And art thou chang'd拭 Pronounce this sentence then此 Women
may fall when there's no strength in men。 Rom。 Thou chid'st me oft for
loving Rosaline。 Friar。 For doting察not for loving察pupil mine。 Rom。 And
bad'st me bury love。 Friar。 Not in a grave To lay one in察 another out to
have。 Rom。 I pray thee chide not。 She whom I love now Doth grace for
grace and love for love allow。 The other did not so。 Friar。 O察she knew well
Thy love did read by rote察that could not spell。 But come察young waverer察
come go with me。 In one respect I'll thy assistant be察For this alliance may
so happy prove To turn your households' rancour to pure love。 Rom。 O察let
us hence I stand on sudden haste。 Friar。 Wisely察and slow。 They stumble
that run fast。 Exeunt。

SCENE IV。 A street。
Enter Benvolio and Mercutio。
Mer。 Where the devil should this Romeo be拭Came he not home to´
night拭Ben。 Not to his father's。 I spoke with his man。 Mer。 Why察that same
pale hard´hearted wench察that Rosaline察Torments him so that he will sure
run mad。 Ben。 Tybalt察the kinsman to old Capulet察Hath sent a letter to his
father's house。 Mer。 A challenge察on my life。 Ben。 Romeo will answer it。
Mer。 Any man that can write may answer a letter。 Ben。 Nay察he will answer
the letter's master察how he dares察being dared。 Mer。 Alas察poor Romeo察he
is already dead stabb'd with a white wench's black eye察shot through the
ear with a love song察the very pin of his heart cleft with the blind bow´
boy's butt´shaft察and is he a man to encounter Tybalt拭Ben。 Why察what is
Tybalt拭 Mer。 More than Prince of Cats察 I can tell you。 O察 he's the
courageous captain of compliments。 He fights as you sing pricksong´keeps
time察distance察and proportion察rests me his minim rest察one察two察and the
