floor察to plough strip察strip to sow察Winter's the lazy time for husbandmen。
In the cold season farmers wont to taste The increase of their toil察 and
yield themselves To mutual interchange of festal cheer。 Boon winter bids
them察 and unbinds their cares察As laden keels察 when now the port they
touch察And happy sailors crown the sterns with flowers。 Nathless then also
time it is to strip Acorns from oaks察and berries from the bay察Olives察and
bleeding myrtles察then to set Snares for the crane察and meshes for the stag察
And hunt the long´eared hares察then pierce the doe With whirl of hempen´
thonged Balearic sling察While snow lies deep察and streams are drifting ice。
What need to tell of autumn's storms and stars察And wherefore men must
watch察when now the day Grows shorter察and more soft the summer's heat拭
When Spring the rain´bringer comes rushing down察Or when the beards of
harvest on the plain Bristle already察and the milky corn On its green stalk
is swelling拭Many a time察When now the farmer to his yellow fields The
reaping´hind came bringing察 even in act To lop the brittle barley stems察
have I Seen all the windy legions clash in war Together察as to rend up far
and wide The heavy corn´crop from its lowest roots察And toss it skyward此
so might winter's flaw察Dark´eddying察whirl light stalks and flying straws。
Oft too comes looming vast along the sky A march of waters察mustering
from above察The clouds roll up the tempest察heaped and grim With angry
showers此down falls the height of heaven察And with a great rain floods the
smiling crops察 The oxen's labour此 now the dikes fill fast察 And the void
river´beds swell thunderously察 And all the panting firths of Ocean boil。
The Sire himself in midnight of the clouds Wields with red hand the levin察
through all her bulk Earth at the hurly quakes察 the beasts are fled察And
mortal hearts of every kindred sunk In cowering terror察he with flaming
brand Athos察 or Rhodope察 or Ceraunian crags Precipitates此 then doubly
raves the South With shower on blinding shower察 and woods and coasts
Wail fitfully beneath the mighty blast。 This fearing察mark the months and
Signs of heaven察Whither retires him Saturn's icy star察And through what
heavenly cycles wandereth The glowing orb Cyllenian。 Before all Worship
the Gods察and to great Ceres pay Her yearly dues upon the happy sward
With sacrifice察anigh the utmost end Of winter察and when Spring begins to
smile。 Then lambs are fat察 and wines are mellowest then察 Then sleep is

sweet察 and dark the shadows fall Upon the mountains。 Let your rustic
youth To Ceres do obeisance察one and all察And for her pleasure thou mix
honeycombs With milk and the ripe wine´god察thrice for luck Around the
young corn let the victim go察And all the choir察a joyful company察Attend it察
and with shouts bid Ceres come To be their house´mate察and let no man
dare Put sickle to the ripened ears until察 With woven oak his temples
chapleted察 He foot the rugged dance and chant the lay。 Aye察 and that
these things we might win to know By certain tokens察heats察and showers察
and winds That bring the frost察 the Sire of all himself Ordained what
warnings in her monthly round The moon should give察 what bodes the
south wind's fall察 What oft´repeated sights the herdsman seeing Should
keep his cattle closer to their stalls。 No sooner are the winds at point to rise察
Than either Ocean's firths begin to toss And swell察 and a dry crackling
sound is heard Upon the heights察or one loud ferment booms The beach
afar察and through the forest goes A murmur multitudinous。 By this Scarce
can the billow spare the curved keels察When swift the sea´gulls from the
middle main Come winging察and their shrieks are shoreward borne察When
ocean´loving cormorants on dry land Besport them察 and the hern察 her
marshy haunts Forsaking察mounts above the soaring cloud。 Oft察too察when
wind is toward察 the stars thou'lt see From heaven shoot headlong察 and
through murky night Long trails of fire white´glistening in their wake察Or
light chaff flit in air with fallen leaves察Or feathers on the wave´top float
and play。 But when from regions of the furious North It lightens察and when
thunder fills the halls Of Eurus and of Zephyr察 all the fields With
brimming dikes are flooded察and at sea No mariner but furls his dripping
sails。 Never at unawares did shower annoy此Or察as it rises察the high´soaring
cranes Flee to the vales before it察with face Upturned to heaven察the heifer
snuffs the gale Through gaping nostrils察 or about the meres Shrill´
twittering flits the swallow察 and the frogs Crouch in the mud and chant
their dirge of old。 Oft察too察the ant from out her inmost cells察Fretting the
narrow path察her eggs conveys察Or the huge bow sucks moisture察or a host
Of rooks from food returning in long line Clamour with jostling wings。
Now mayst thou see The various ocean´fowl and those that pry Round
Asian meads within thy fresher´pools察Cayster察as in eager rivalry察About

their shoulders dash the plenteous spray察Now duck their head beneath the
wave察now run Into the billows察for sheer idle joy Of their mad bathing´
revel。 Then the crow With full voice察good´for´naught察inviting rain察Stalks
on the dry sand mateless and alone。 Nor e'en the maids察 that card their
nightly task察Know not the storm´sign察when in blazing crock They see the
lamp´oil sputtering with a growth Of mouldy snuff´clots。
So too察after rain察Sunshine and open skies thou mayst forecast察And learn
by tokens sure察for then nor dimmed Appear the stars' keen edges察nor the
moon As borrowing of her brother's beams to rise察 Nor fleecy films to
float along the sky。 Not to the sun's warmth then upon the shore Do
halcyons dear to Thetis ope their wings察Nor filthy swine take thought to
toss on high With scattering snout the straw´wisps。 But the clouds Seek
more the vales察and rest upon the plain察And from the roof´top the night´
owl for naught Watching the sunset plies her 'lated song。 Distinct in
clearest air is Nisus seen Towering察 and Scylla for the purple lock Pays
dear察for whereso察as she flies察her wings The light air winnow察lo fierce察
implacable察 Nisus with mighty whirr through heaven pursues察 Where
Nisus heavenward soareth察there her wings Clutch as she flies察the light air
winnowing still。 Soft then the voice of rooks from indrawn throat Thrice察
four times察 o'er repeated察 and full oft On their high cradles察 by some
hidden joy Gladdened beyond their wont察in bustling throngs Among the
leaves they riot察so sweet it is察When showers are spent察their own loved
nests again And tender brood to visit。 Not察 I deem察 That heaven some
native wit to these assigned察Or fate a larger prescience察but that when The
storm and shifting moisture of the air Have changed their courses察and the
sky´god now察Wet with the south´wind察thickens what was rare察And what
was gross releases察 then察 too察 change Their spirits' fleeting phases察 and
their breasts Feel other motions now察than when the wind Was driving up
the cloud´rack。 Hence proceeds That blending of the feathered choirs
afield察 The cattle's exultation察 and the rooks' Deep´throated triumph。
But if the headlong sun And moons in order following thou regard察Ne'er
will to´morrow's hour deceive thee察ne'er Wilt thou be caught by guile of
cloudless night。 When first the moon recalls her rallying fires察If dark the
air clipped by her crescent dim察 For folks afield and on the open sea A

mighty rain is brewing察 but if her face With maiden blush she mantle察
'twill be wind察For wind turns Phoebe still to ruddier gold。 But if at her
fourth rising察for 'tis that Gives surest counsel察clear she ride thro' heaven
With horns unblunted察then shall that whole day察And to the month's end
those that spring from it察Rainless and windless be察while safe ashore Shall
sailors pay their vows to Panope察 Glaucus察 and
