BEOWULF spake察 bairn of Ecgtheow此 Lo察 we seafarers say our
will察far´come men察that we fain would seek Hygelac now。 We here have
found hosts to our heart此thou hast harbored us well。 If ever on earth I am
able to win me more of thy love察O lord of men察aught anew察than I now
have done察for work of war I am willing still If it come to me ever across
the seas that neighbor foemen annoy and fright thee察 as they that hate
thee erewhile have used察 thousands then of thanes I shall bring察heroes
to help thee。 Of Hygelac I know察 ward of his folk察 that察 though few his
years察the lord of the Geats will give me aid by word and by work察that
well I may serve thee察 wielding the war´wood to win thy triumph and
lending thee might when thou lackest men。 If thy Hrethric should come to
court of Geats察a sovran's son察he will surely there find his friends。 A far´
off land each man should visit who vaunts him brave。; Him then
answering察Hrothgar spake此 These words of thine the wisest God sent
to thy soul No sager counsel from so young in years e'er yet have I heard。
Thou art strong of main and in mind art wary察art wise in words I ween
indeed if ever it hap that Hrethel's heir by spear be seized察by sword´grim
battle察by illness or iron察thine elder and lord察people's leader察 and life be
thine察 no seemlier man will the Sea´Geats find at all to choose for their
chief and king察for hoard´guard of heroes察if hold thou wilt thy kinsman's
kingdom Thy keen mind pleases me the longer the better察Beowulf loved
Thou hast brought it about that both our peoples察sons of the Geat and
Spear´Dane folk察shall have mutual peace察and from murderous strife察such
as once they waged察from war refrain。 Long as I rule this realm so wide察
let our hoards be common察let heroes with gold each other greet o'er the
gannet's´bath察and the ringed´prow bear o'er rolling waves tokens of love。 I
trow my landfolk towards friend and foe are firmly joined察and honor they
keep in the olden way。; To him in the hall察 then察 Healfdene's son gave
treasures twelve察and the trust´of´earls bade him fare with the gifts to his
folk beloved察hale to his home察and in haste return。 Then kissed the king of
kin renowned察 Scyldings' chieftain察 that choicest thane察 and fell on his
neck。 Fast flowed the tears of the hoary´headed。 Heavy with winters察he

had chances twain察but he clung to this撮1А that each should look on the
other again察and hear him in hall。 Was this hero so dear to him。 his breast's
wild billows he banned in vain察safe in his soul a secret longing察locked in
his mind察for that loved man burned in his blood。 Then Beowulf strode察
glad of his gold´gifts察the grass´plot o'er察warrior blithe。 The wave´roamer

Hrothgar's gift they lauded at length。 'Twas a lord unpeered察every way
blameless察till age had broken it spareth no mortal his splendid might。
1АThat is察he might or might not see Beowulf again。 Old as he was察
the latter chance was likely察but he clung to the former察hoping to see his
young friend again ;and exchange brave words in the hall。;

CAME now to ocean the ever´courageous hardy henchmen察 their
harness bearing察woven war´sarks。 The warden marked察trusty as ever察the
earl's return。 From the height of the hill no hostile words reached the
guests as he rode to greet them察but ;Welcome ─he called to that Weder
clan as the sheen´mailed spoilers to ship marched on。 Then on the strand察
with steeds and treasure and armor their roomy and ring´dight ship was
heavily laden此high its mast rose over Hrothgar's hoarded gems。 A sword
to the boat´guard Beowulf gave察 mounted with gold察on the mead´bench
since he was better esteemed察that blade possessing察heirloom old。 Their
ocean´keel boarding察 they drove through the deep察 and Daneland left。 A
sea´cloth was set察 a sail with ropes察 firm to the mast察 the flood´timbers

waves察keel firm´bound over briny currents察till they got them sight of the
Geatish cliffs察home´known headlands。 High the boat察stirred by winds察on
the strand updrove。 Helpful at haven the harbor´guard stood察 who long
already for loved companions by the water had waited and watched afar。
He bound to the beach the broad´bosomed ship with anchor´bands察 lest

them bear the treasure察gold and jewels察no journey far was it thence to go

so daring that durst make bold save her lord alone of the liegemen dear

HASTENED the hardy one察henchmen with him察sandy strand of the
sea to tread and widespread ways。 The world's great candle察 sun shone
from south。 They strode along with sturdy steps to the spot they knew
where the battle´king young察 his burg within察 slayer of Ongentheow察
shared the rings察 shelter´of´heroes。 To Hygelac Beowulf's coming was
quickly told察 that there in the court the clansmen's refuge察 the shield´
companion sound and alive察 hale from the hero´play homeward strode。
With haste in the hall察by highest order察room for the rovers was readily
made。 By his sovran he sat察come safe from battle察kinsman by kinsman。
His kindly lord he first had greeted in gracious form察with manly words。
The mead dispensing察 came through the high hall Haereth's daughter察
winsome to warriors察wine´cup bore to the hands of the heroes。 Hygelac
then his comrade fairly with question plied in the lofty hall察sore longing
to know what manner of sojourn the Sea´Geats made。 ;What came of thy
quest察 my kinsman Beowulf察 when thy yearnings suddenly swept thee
yonder battle to seek o'er the briny sea察 combat in Heorot拭 Hrothgar
couldst thou aid at all察the honored chief察in his wide´known woes拭With
waves of care my sad heart seethed察 I sore mistrusted my loved one's
venture此long I begged thee by no means to seek that slaughtering monster察
but suffer the South´Danes to settle their feud themselves with Grendel。
Now God be thanked that safe and sound I can see thee now ─Beowulf
spake察the bairn of Ecgtheow此 'Tis known and unhidden察Hygelac Lord察
to many men察that meeting of ours察struggle grim between Grendel and me察
which we fought on the field where full too many sorrows he wrought for
the Scylding´Victors察evils unending。 These all I avenged。 No boast can be
