King Henry VI察Part 2
SCENE I。 Fields between Dartford and Blackheath
Enter YORK察and his army of Irish察with drum and colours
YORK。 From Ireland thus comes York to claim his right And pluck
the crown from feeble Henry's head此Ring bells aloud察burn bonfires clear
and bright察To entertain great England's lawful king。 Ah察sancta majestas
who would not buy thee dear拭Let them obey that knows not how to rule察
This hand was made to handle nought but gold。 I cannot give due action to
my words Except a sword or sceptre balance it。 A sceptre shall it have察
have I a soul On which I'll toss the flower´de´luce of France。
Enter BUCKINGHAM
AsideАWhom have we here拭Buckingham察to disturb me拭The King
hath sent him察 sure此 I must dissemble。 BUCKINGHAM。 York察 if thou
meanest well I greet thee well。 YORK。 Humphrey of Buckingham察 I
accept thy greeting。 Art thou a messenger察 or come of pleasure拭
BUCKINGHAM。 A messenger from Henry察our dread liege察To know the
reason of these arms in peace察 Or why thou察 being a subject as I am察
Against thy oath and true allegiance sworn察Should raise so great a power
without his leave察 Or dare to bring thy force so near the court。 YORK。
AsideАScarce can I speak察my choler is so great。 O察I could hew up rocks
and fight with flint察 I am so angry at these abject terms察And now察 like
Ajax Telamonius察On sheep or oxen could I spend my fury。 I am far better
born than is the King察More like a king察more kingly in my thoughts察But I
must make fair weather yet awhile察Till Henry be more weak and I more
strong。´ Buckingham察I prithee察pardon me That I have given no answer all
this while察My mind was troubled with deep melancholy。 The cause why I
have brought this army hither Is to remove proud Somerset from the King察
Seditious to his Grace and to the state。 BUCKINGHAM。 That is too much
presumption on thy part察But if thy arms be to no other end察The King hath
yielded unto thy demand此The Duke of Somerset is in the Tower。 YORK。
Upon thine honour察is he prisoner拭BUCKINGHAM。 Upon mine honour察
he is prisoner。 YORK。 Then察 Buckingham察 I do dismiss my pow'rs。
Soldiers察I thank you all察disperse yourselves察Meet me to´morrow in Saint
George's field察You shall have pay and everything you wish。 And let my

goods察horse察armour察anything I have察Is his to use察so Somerset may die。
BUCKINGHAM。 York察I commend this kind submission。 We twain will
go into his Highness' tent。
Enter the KING察and attendants
KING HENRY。 Buckingham察doth York intend no harm to us察That
thus he marcheth with thee arm in arm拭 YORK。 In all submission and
humility York doth present himself unto your Highness。 KING HENRY。
Then what intends these forces thou dost bring拭 YORK。 To heave the
traitor Somerset from hence察And fight against that monstrous rebel Cade察
Who since I heard to be discomfited。
Enter IDEN察with CADE's head
IDEN。 If one so rude and of so mean condition May pass into the
presence of a king察Lo察I present your Grace a traitor's head察The head of
Cade察whom I in combat slew。 KING HENRY。 The head of Cade Great
God察how just art Thou O察let me view his visage察being dead察That living
wrought me such exceeding trouble。 Tell me察my friend察art thou the man
that slew him拭IDEN。 I was察an't like your Majesty。 KING HENRY。 How
art thou call'd拭And what is thy degree拭IDEN。 Alexander Iden察that's my
name察A poor esquire of Kent that loves his king。 BUCKINGHAM。 So
please it you察 my lord察 'twere not amiss He were created knight for his
good service。 KING HENRY。 Iden察 kneel down。 He kneelsА Rise up a
knight。 We give thee for reward a thousand marks察 And will that thou
thenceforth attend on us。 IDEN。 May Iden live to merit such a bounty察And
never live but true unto his liege
Enter the QUEEN and SOMERSET
KING HENRY。 See察Buckingham Somerset comes with th' Queen此
Go察bid her hide him quickly from the Duke。 QUEEN。 For thousand Yorks
he shall not hide his head察 But boldly stand and front him to his face。
YORK。 How now Is Somerset at liberty拭Then察York察unloose thy long´
imprisoned thoughts And let thy tongue be equal with thy heart。 Shall I
endure the sight of Somerset拭False king察why hast thou broken faith with
me察 Knowing how hardly I can brook abuse拭 King did I call thee拭 No察

princely sceptre。 That gold must round engirt these brows of mine察Whose

whom heaven created for thy ruler。 SOMERSET。 O monstrous traitor I
