regard should be察My worth unknown察no loss is known in me察Upon my
death the French can little boast察In yours they will察in you all hopes are
lost。 Flight cannot stain the honour you have won察But mine it will察that no
exploit have done察You fled for vantage察every one will swear察But if I bow察
they'll say it was for fear。 There is no hope that ever I will stay If the first
hour I shrink and run away。 Here察on my knee察I beg mortality察Rather than
life preserv'd with infamy。 TALBOT。 Shall all thy mother's hopes lie in
one tomb拭JOHN。 Ay察rather than I'll shame my mother's womb。 TALBOT。
Upon my blessing I command thee go。 JOHN。 To fight I will察but not to
fly the foe。 TALBOT。 Part of thy father may be sav'd in thee。 JOHN。 No
part of him but will be shame in me。 TALBOT。 Thou never hadst renown察
nor canst not lose it。 JOHN。 Yes察your renowned name察shall flight abuse it拭
TALBOT。 Thy father's charge shall clear thee from that stain。 JOHN。 You
cannot witness for me察being slain。 If death be so apparent察then both fly。
TALBOT。 And leave my followers here to fight and die拭 My age was
never tainted with such shame。 JOHN。 And shall my youth be guilty of
such blame拭No more can I be severed from your side Than can yourself

yourself yourself in twain divide。 Stay察go察do what you will察the like do I察
For live I will not if my father die。 TALBOT。 Then here I take my leave of
thee察fair son察Born to eclipse thy life this afternoon。 Come察side by side
together live and die察 And soul with soul from France to heaven fly。
Exeunt

SCENE 6。
A field of battle
Alarum此 excursions wherein JOHN TALBOT is hemm'd about察 and
TALBOT rescues him
TALBOT。 Saint George and victory Fight察 soldiers察 fight。 The
Regent hath with Talbot broke his word And left us to the rage of France
his sword。 Where is John Talbot拭Pause and take thy breath察I gave thee
life and rescu'd thee from death。 JOHN。 O察twice my father察twice am I thy
son The life thou gav'st me first was lost and done Till with thy warlike
sword察 despite of fate察 To my determin'd time thou gav'st new date。
TALBOT。 When from the Dauphin's crest thy sword struck fire察It warm'd
thy father's heart with proud desire Of bold´fac'd victory。 Then leaden age察
Quicken'd with youthful spleen and warlike rage察 Beat down Alencon察
Orleans察Burgundy察And from the pride of Gallia rescued thee。 The ireful
bastard Orleans察 that drew blood From thee察 my boy察 and had the
maidenhood Of thy first fight察 I soon encountered And察 interchanging
blows察I quickly shed Some of his bastard blood察and in disgrace Bespoke
him thus此 'Contaminated察 base察 And misbegotten blood I spill of thine察
Mean and right poor察for that pure blood of mine Which thou didst force
from Talbot察my brave boy。' Here purposing the Bastard to destroy察Came
in strong rescue。 Speak察thy father's care察Art thou not weary察John拭How
dost thou fare拭Wilt thou yet leave the battle察boy察and fly察Now thou art
seal'd the son of chivalry拭Fly察to revenge my death when I am dead此The
help of one stands me in little stead。 O察too much folly is it察well I wot察To
hazard all our lives in one small boat If I to´day die not with Frenchmen's
rage察To´morrow I shall die with mickle age。 By me they nothing gain an
if I stay此'Tis but the short'ning of my life one day。 In thee thy mother dies察
our household's name察My death's revenge察thy youth察and England's fame。
All these and more we hazard by thy stay察All these are sav'd if thou wilt
fly away。 JOHN。 The sword of Orleans hath not made me smart察These
words of yours draw life´blood from my heart。 On that advantage察bought
with such a shame察 To save a paltry life and slay bright fame察 Before
young Talbot from old Talbot fly察The coward horse that bears me fall and

die And like me to the peasant boys of France察To be shame's scorn and
subject of mischance Surely察by all the glory you have won察An if I fly察I
am not Talbot's son察Then talk no more of flight察it is no boot察If son to
Talbot察die at Talbot's foot。 TALBOT。 Then follow thou thy desp'rate sire
of Crete察Thou Icarus察thy life to me is sweet。 If thou wilt fight察fight by
thy father's side察And察commendable prov'd察let's die in pride。 Exeunt

Another part of the field
Alarum察excursions。 Enter old TALBOT led by a SERVANT
TALBOT。 Where is my other life拭 Mine own is gone。 O察 where's
young Talbot拭 Where is valiant John拭 Triumphant death察 smear'd with
captivity察 Young Talbot's valour makes me smile at thee。 When he
perceiv'd me shrink and on my knee察His bloody sword he brandish'd over
me察And like a hungry lion did commence Rough deeds of rage and stern
impatience察But when my angry guardant stood alone察Tend'ring my ruin
and assail'd of none察 Dizzy´ey'd fury and great rage of heart Suddenly
made him from my side to start Into the clust'ring battle of the French察
And in that sea of blood my boy did drench His overmounting spirit察and
there died察My Icarus察my blossom察in his pride。
Enter soldiers察bearing the body of JOHN TALBOT
SERVANT。 O my dear lord察lo where your son is borne TALBOT。
Thou antic Death察 which laugh'st us here to scorn察 Anon察 from thy
insulting tyranny察 Coupled in bonds of perpetuity察 Two Talbots察 winged
through the lither sky察In thy despite shall scape mortality。 O thou whose
wounds become hard´favoured Death察Speak to thy father ere thou yield
thy breath Brave Death by speaking察whether he will or no察Imagine him
a Frenchman and thy foe。 Poor boy he smiles察methinks察as who should
say察Had Death been French察then Death had died to´day。 Come察come察and
lay him in his father's arms。 My spirit can no longer bear these harms。
Soldiers察adieu I have what I would have察Now my old arms are young
John Talbot's grave。 DiesАEnter CHARLES察ALENCON察BURGUNDY察
BASTARD察LA PUCELLE察and forces
CHARLES。 Had York and Somerset brought rescue in察 We should
have found a bloody day of this。 BASTARD。 How the young whelp of
Talbot's察 raging wood察 Did flesh his puny sword in Frenchmen's blood
PUCELLE。 Once I encount'red him察and thus I said此'Thou maiden youth察
be vanquish'd by a maid。' But with a proud majestical high scorn He
answer'd thus此 'Young Talbot was not born To be the pillage of a giglot
wench。' So察 rushing in the bowels of the French察 He left me proudly察 as

unworthy fight。 BURGUNDY。 Doubtless he would have made a noble
knight。 See where he lies inhearsed in the arms Of the most bloody nurser
of his harms BASTARD。 Hew them to pieces察hack their bones asunder察
Whose life was England's glory察 Gallia's wonder。 CHARLES。 O察 no察
forbear For that which we have fled During the life察let us not wrong it
dead。
Enter SIR WILLIAM Lucy察 attended察 a FRENCH HERALD
preceding
LUCY。 Herald察conduct me to the Dauphin's tent察To know who hath
obtain'd the glory of the day。 CHARLES。 On what submissive message art
thou sent拭 LUCY。 Submission察 Dauphin 'Tis a mere French word此 We
English warriors wot not what it means。 I come to know what prisoners
thou hast ta'en察 And to survey the bodies of the dead。 CHARLES。 For
prisoners ask'st thou拭Hell our prison is。 But tell me whom thou seek'st。
LUCY。 But where's the great Alcides of the field察Valiant Lord Talbot察Earl
of Shrewsbury察 Created for his rare success in arms Great Earl of
Washford察 Waterford察 and Valence察 Lord Talbot of Goodrig and

Lord of Falconbridge察Knight of the noble order of Saint George察Worthy
Saint Michael察and the Golden Fleece察Great Marshal to Henry the Sixth
Of all his wars within the realm of France拭 PUCELLE。 Here's a silly´
stately style indeed The Turk察that two and fifty kingdoms hath察Writes
not so tedious a style as this。 Him that thou magnifi'st with all these tides察
Stinking and fly´blown lies here at our feet。 LUCY。 Is Talbot slain´the
Frenchmen's only scourge察Your kingdom's terror and black Nemesis拭O察
were mine eye´bans into bullets turn'd察That I in rage might shoot them at
your faces O that I could but can these dead to life It were enough to
fright the realm
