shall be your pleasure to bid share your throne。 Hence I察in obedience to
your Highness' commands察 pronounce and declare that this damsel is
lawfully and irrevocably bound and affianced to the learned Dr。 Fusbius察
unless and until it shall please your Highness yourself to demand her hand
in marriage。 May what I have spoken please your Highness ─ And the
President sat down。
Duke Deodonato sat a while in thought察and there was silence in the
hall。 Then he spoke此
;Let all withdraw察saving the damsel only。;
And they one and all withdrew察and Duke Deodonato was left alone
with the damsel。
Then he arose and gazed long on the damsel察but the damsel would not

look on Duke Deodonato。
;How are you called察lady拭─asked Duke Deodonato。
;I am called Dulcissima察─said she。
;Well named ─said Deodonato softly察and he went to the damsel察and
he laid his hand察full gently察on her robe察and he said此
;Dulcissima察 you have the prettiest face in all the Duchy察 and I will
have no wife but you察─and Duke Deodonato kissed the damsel。
The damsel forbore to strike Duke Deodonato察as she had struck Dr。
Fusbius。 Again her cheek went red察and again pale察and she said此
;I wed no man on compulsion。;
;Madam察 I am your Sovereign察─ said Duke Deodonato察 and his eyes
were on the damsel。
;If you were an Archangel; cried the damsel。
;Our house is not wont to be scorned of ladies察─ said Deodonato。
;Am I crooked察or baseborn察or a fool拭─
;This day in your Duchy women are slaves察and men their masters by
your will察─said she。
;It is the order of nature察─said Deodonato。
;It is not my pleasure察─said the damsel。
Then Deodonato laid his hand on his silver bell察for he was very angry。
;Fusbius waits without察─said he。
;I will wed him and kill him察─cried Dulcissima。
Deodonato gazed on her。
;You had no chance of using the pins察─said he察 and the rent in your
gown is very sore。;
And upon this the eyes of the damsel lost their fire and sought the
floor察 and she plucked at her girdle察 and would not look on Deodonato。
And they said outside此
;It is very still in the Hall of the Duke。;
Then said Deodonato此
;Dulcissima察what would you拭─
;That you repeal your decrees察─said she。
Deodonato's brow grew dark察he did not love to go back。

;What I have decreed察I have decreed察─said he。
;And what I have resolved察I have resolved察─said she。
Deodonato drew near to her。
;And if I repeal the decrees拭─said he。
;You will do well察─said she。
;And you will wed;
;Whom I will察─said she。
Deodonato turned to the window察and for a space he looked out察and
the damsel smoothed her hair and drew her robe察 where it was whole察
across the rent察and she looked on Deodonato as he stood察and her bosom
rose and fell。 And she prayed a prayer that no man heard察or察if he heard察
might be so base as to tell。 But she saw the dark locks of Deodonato's
hair and his form察straight as an arrow and tall as a six´foot wand察in the
window。 And again察outside察they said此
;It is strangely still in the Hall of the Duke。;
Then Deodonato turned察and he pressed with his hand on the silver bell察
and straightway the Hall was filled with the Councilors察the Judges察and
the halberdiers察attentive to hear the will of Deodonato and the fate of the
damsel。 And the small eyes of Fusbius glowed察and the calm eyes of the
President smiled。
;My Cousins察 Gentlemen察 and my faithful Guard察─ said Deodonato察
;Time察which is Heaven's mighty Instrument察brings counsel。 Say what
the Duke has done察shall any man undo拭─
Then cried they all察save one此
;No man ─
And the President said此
;Saving the Duke。;
;The decrees which I made察─said Deodonato察 I unmake。 Henceforth
let men and maidens in my Duchy marry or not marry as they will察and
God give them joy of it。;
And all察save Fusbius察cried ;Amen ─ But Fusbius cried此
;Your Highness察it is demonstrated beyond cavil察ay察to the satisfaction
of your Highness;

;This is very tedious察─said Deodonato。 ;Let him speak no more ─
And again he drew near to Dulcissima察and there察before them all察he
fell on his knee。 And a murmur ran through the hall。
;Madam察─ said Deodonato察 if you love me察 wed me。 And察 if you
love me not察depart in peace and in honor察and I察Deodonato察will live my
life alone。;
Then the damsel trembled察and barely did Deodonato catch her words此
;There are many men here察─said she。
;It is not given to Princes察─ said Deodonato察 to be alone。
Nevertheless察if you will察leave me alone。; And the damsel bent low察so
that the breath of her mouth stirred the hair on Deodonato's head察and he
shivered as he knelt。
;My Prince and my King ─said she。
And Deodonato shot to his feet察and before them all he kissed her察and察
turning察spoke此
;As I have wooed察let every man in this Duchy woo。 As I have won察
let every man that is worthy win。 For察unless he so woo察and unless he so
win察vain is his wooing察and vain is his winning察and a fig for his wedding察
say I察Deodonato I察that was Deodonato察and now amDeodonato and
Dulcissima。;
And a great cheer rang out in the Hall察and Fusbius fled to the door察
and they tore his gown as he went and cursed him for a knave。 But the
President raised his voice aloud and cried此
;May Heaven preserve your Highnessesand here's a blessing on all
windows ─
And that is the reason why you will find if you travel there察as I trust
you may察 for nowhere are the ladies fairer or the men so gallant more
windows in the Duchy of Deodonato than anywhere in the wide world
besides。 For the more windows察the wider the view察 and the wider the
view察 the more pretty damsels do you see察 and the more pretty damsels
you see察the more jocund a thing is lifeand that is what the men of the
Duchy loveand not least察 Duke Deodonato察 whom察 with his bride
Dulcissima察may Heaven long preserve

CHAPTER VIII。
ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL。
There was oncethe date is of no momenta Sultan察 and he had a
Vizier named Ashimullah。 This minister was a wise man察much trusted
by his master察but he was held in some suspicion and dislike at the court
because he had been bornor察if that be doubtful察had at least been breda
Christian察and had been originally a prisoner of the Sultan's armies。
But Ashimullah察for reasons which intimately concerned his own head察
but need not concern anybody else's察promptly found the true path察 and察
having professed a ready conversion to the tenets of Islam察rose rapidly to
a high place in the service of the Sultan察 so that his promotion never
ceased until he was installed in the office of Grand Vizier。 Yet察
remembering his discreditable past察 the Sultan was accustomed to exact
from him the fullest and most minute observance of his religious duties。
To such observance Ashimullah submitted察 comforting himself with the
example of Naaman the Syrian察 for Ashimullah was still察 in secret察 a
Christian察 and his adherence to Islam was only a polite concession to
public feeling。 But there was one point on which his conscience struck
him sorely察and this was no other than the question of wives。 Ashimullah
had one wife察a lady of great beauty and remarkable accomplishments察and
for the life of him he could not see how察 consistently with the religion
which he held in his heart and with the honor that he owed to the lady察he
could take any other wife。 Such an act appeared to him to be a deadly sin察
for it was most plainly held and laid down by the rules of his religion察and
had moreover been amply proved by experience察that one wife was enough
for any man。 Therefore when the Sultan察 hearing that Ashimullah had
but one wife察and considering the thing very suspicious and unnatural察sent
for him察 and required him to order his establishment on a scale more
befitting his present exalted position察Ashimullah was in sad perplexity。
To obey was to sin察 to refuse was likely to cost him his life察 for if his
master suspected the sincerity of his conversion察his shrift would be short。
