when a shot from the Normans kills Harold。 The Fairy Edith hereupon
comes forward察 and finds his body察 which straightway leaps up a live
harlequin察 whilst the Conqueror makes an excellent clown察 and the
Archbishop of Bayeux a diverting pantaloon察&c。 &c。 &c。
Perhaps these are not the pantomimes we really saw察 but one
description will do as well as another。 The plots察 you see察 are a little
intricate and difficult to understand in pantomimes察and I may have mixed
up one with another。 That I was at the theatre on Boxing´night is certain
but the pit was so full that I could only see fairy legs glittering in the
distance察as I stood at the door。 And if I was badly off察I think there was

a young gentleman behind me worse off still。 I own that he has good
reason though others have not to speak ill of me behind my back察and
hereby beg his pardon。
Likewise to the gentleman who picked up a party in Piccadilly察 who
had slipped and fallen in the snow察 and was there on his back察 uttering
energetic expressions此 that party begs to offer thanks察and compliments
of the season。
Bob's behaviour on New Year's day察I can assure Dr Holyshade察was
highly creditable to the boy。 He had expressed a determination to partake
of every dish which was put on the table察 but after soup察fish察roast´beef察
and roast´goose察 he retired from active business until the pudding and
mince´pies made their appearance察of which he partook liberally察but not
too freely。 And he greatly advanced in my good opinion by praising the
punch察 which was of my own manufacture察 and which some gentlemen
present Mr O'Mgn察amongst others pronounced to be too weak。 Too
weak A bottle of rum察a bottle of Madeira察half a bottle of brandy察and two
bottles and a half of water can this mixture be said to be too weak for
any mortal拭 Our young friend amused the company during the evening察
by exhibiting a two´shilling magic´ lantern察which he had purchased察and
likewise by singing ;Sally察 come up ─ a quaint察 but rather monotonous
melody察 which I am told is sung by the poor negro on the banks of the
broad Mississippi。
What other enjoyments did we proffer for the child's amusement
during the Christmas week拭 A great philosopher was giving a lecture to
young folks at the British Institution。 But when this diversion was
proposed to our young friend Bob察 he said察 Lecture拭 No察 thank you。
Not as I knows on察─and made sarcastic signals on his nose。 Perhaps he
is of Dr Johnson's opinion about lectures此 Lectures察 sir what man
would go to hear that imperfectly at a lecture察which he can read at leisure
in a book拭─ I never went察 of my own choice察 to a lecture察that I can
vow。 As for sermons察 they are different察 I delight in them察 and they
cannot察of course察be too long。
Well察we partook of yet other Christmas delights besides pantomime察
pudding察 and pie。 One glorious察 one delightful察 one most unlucky and

pleasant day察we drove in a brougham察with a famous horse察which carried
us more quickly and briskly than any of your vulgar railways察 over
Battersea Bridge察on which the horse's hoofs rung as if it had been iron察
through suburban villages察plum´caked with snow察 under a leaden sky察in
which the sun hung like a red´hot warming´pan察 by pond after pond察
where not only men and boys察but scores after scores of women and girls察
were sliding察and roaring察and clapping their lean old sides with laughter察
as they tumbled down察and their hobnailed shoes flew up in the air察 the
air frosty with a lilac haze察 through which villas察 and commons察 and
churches察and plantations glimmered。 We drive up the hill察 Bob and I察
we make the last two miles in eleven minutes察 we pass that poor察armless
man who sits there in the cold察following you with his eyes。 I don't give
anything察 and Bob looks disappointed。 We are set down neatly at the
gate察and a horse´holder opens the brougham door。 I don't give anything察
again disappointment on Bob's part。 I pay a shilling apiece察and we enter
into the glorious building察 which is decorated for Christmas察 and
straightway forgetfulness on Bob's part of everything but that magnificent
scene。 The enormous edifice is all decorated for Bob and Christmas。
The stalls察the columns察the fountains察courts察statues察splendours察are all
crowned for Christmas。 The delicious negro is singing his Alabama
choruses for Christmas and Bob。 He has scarcely done察 when察
Tootarootatoo Mr Punch is performing his surprising actions察 and
hanging the beadle。 The stalls are decorated。 The refreshment´tables
are piled with good things察 at many fountains ;Mulled Claret; is written
up in appetizing capitals。 ;Mulled Claret oh察jolly How cold it is ─
says Bob察 I pass on。 ;It's only three o'clock察─ says Bob。 ;No察 only
three察─I say meekly。 ;We dine at seven察─sighs Bob察 and it's so´o´o coo´
old。; I still would take no hints。 No claret察 no refreshment察 no
sandwiches察no sausage´rolls for Bob。 At last I am obliged to tell him all。
Just before we left home察a little Christmas bill popped in at the door and
emptied my purse at the threshold。 I forgot all about the transaction察and
had to borrow half´a´crown from John Coachman to pay for our entrance
into the palace of delight。 Now you see察Bob察why I could not treat you
on that second of January when we drove to the palace together察 when

the girls and boys were sliding on the ponds at Dulwich察 when the
darkling river was full of floating ice察and the sun was like a warming´pan
in the leaden sky。
One more Christmas sight we had察of course察and that sight I think I
like as well as Bob himself at Christmas察and at all seasons。 We went to
a certain garden of delight察where察whatever your cares are察I think you can
manage to forget some of them察 and muse察 and be not unhappy察 to a
garden beginning with a Z察which is as lively as Noah's ark察 where the
fox has brought his brush察 and the cock has brought his comb察 and the
elephant has brought his trunk察and the kangaroo has brought his bag察and
the condor his old white wig and black satin hood。 On this day it was so
cold that the white bears winked their pink eyes察as they plapped up and
down by their pool察and seemed to say察 Aha察this weather reminds us of
dear home ─ Cold bah I have got such a warm coat察─ says brother
Bruin察 I don't mind;察 and he laughs on his pole察and clucks down a bun。
The squealing hyaenas gnashed their teeth and laughed at us quite
refreshingly at their window察 and察 cold as it was察 Tiger察 Tiger察 burning
bright察 glared at us red´hot through his bars察 and snorted blasts of hell。
The woolly camel leered at us quite kindly as he paced round his ring on
his silent pads。 We went to our favourite places。 Our dear wambat
came up察and had himself scratched very affably。 Our fellow´ creatures
in the monkey room held out their little black hands察and piteously asked
us for Christmas alms。 Those darling alligators on their rock winked at
us in the most friendly way。 The solemn eagles sat alone察and scowled at
us from their peaks察whilst little Tom Ratel tumbled over head and heels
for us in his usual diverting manner。 If I have cares in my mind察I come
to the Zoo察and fancy they don't pass the gate。 I recognise my friends察
my enemies察in countless cages。 I entertained the eagle察the vulture察the
old billy´goat察 and the black´pated察 crimson´necked察 blear´eyed察 baggy察
hook´beaked old marabou stork yesterday at dinner察 and when Bob's
aunt came to tea in the evening察 and asked him what he had seen察 he
stepped up to her gravely察and said
;First I saw the white bear察then I saw the black察Then I saw the camel
with a hump upon his back。
