Ballad此To My Bride ´ Whoever
She May Be
Oh little maid I do not know your name Or who you are察so察as a
safe precaution I'll add ´ Oh察buxom widow married dame 。As one of
these must be your present portion Listen察while I unveil prophetic lore
for you察And sing the fate that Fortune has in store for you。
You'll marry soon ´ within a year or twain ´ A bachelor of CIRCA two
and thirty此 Tall察 gentlemanly察 but extremely plain察 And when you're
intimate察 you'll call him ;BERTIE。; Neat ´ dresses well察 his temper has
been classified As hasty察but he's very quickly pacified。
You'll find him working mildly at the Bar察After a touch at two or three
professions察From easy affluence extremely far察A brief or two on Circuit ´
;soup; at Sessions察A pound or two from whist and backing horses察And察
say three hundred from his own resources。
Quiet in harness察free from serious vice察His faults are not particularly
shady察You'll never find him ;SHY; ´ for察once or twice Already察he's been
driven by a lady察Who parts with him ´ perhaps a poor excuse for him ´
Because she hasn't any further use for him。
Oh bride of mine ´ tall察 dumpy察 dark察 or fair Oh widow ´ wife察
maybe察 or blushing maiden察 I've told YOUR fortune察 solved the gravest
care With which your mind has hitherto been laden。 I've prophesied
correctly察never doubt it察Now tell me mine ´ and please be quick about it
You ´ only you ´ can tell me察 an' you will察 To whom I'm destined
shortly to be mated察 Will she run up a heavy MODISTE'S bill拭 If so察 I
want to hear her income stated This is a point which interests me greatly。
To quote the bard察 Oh have I seen her lately拭─
Say察must I wait till husband number one Is comfortably stowed away
at Woking拭How is her hair most usually done拭And tell me察please察will
she object to smoking拭 The colour of her eyes察 too察 you may mention此
Come察Sibyl察prophesy ´ I'm all attention。

The Bab Ballads
Ballad此The Folly Of Brown ´ By A
General Agent
I knew a boor ´ a clownish card His only friends were pigs and cows
and The poultry of a small farmyard察 Who came into two hundred
thousand。
Good fortune worked no change in BROWN察Though she's a mighty
social chymist察 He was a clown ´ and by a clown I do not mean a
pantomimist。
It left him quiet察calm察and cool察Though hardly knowing what a crown
was ´ You can't imagine what a fool Poor rich uneducated BROWN was
He scouted all who wished to come And give him monetary schooling察
And I propose to give you some Idea of his insensate fooling。
I formed a company or two ´ Of course I don't know what the rest
meant察 I formed them solely with a view To help him to a sound
investment。
Their objects were ´ their only cares ´ To justify their Boards in
showing A handsome dividend on shares And keep their good promoter
going。
But no ´ the lout sticks to his brass察 Though shares at par I freely
proffer此Yet ´ will it be believed拭 the ass Declines察with thanks察my well´
meant offer
He adds察 with bumpkin's stolid grin A weakly intellect denoting察
He'd rather not invest it in A company of my promoting
;You have two hundred 'thou' or more察─Said I。 ;You'll waste it察lose
it察lend it察Come察take my furnished second floor察I'll gladly show you how
to spend it。;
But will it be believed that he察 With grin upon his face of poppy察
Declined my aid察 while thanking me For what he called my
;philanthroppy;拭
Some blind察suspicious fools rejoice In doubting friends who wouldn't
harm them察 They will not hear the charmer's voice察 However wisely he

may charm them
I showed him that his coat察 all dust察 Top boots and cords provoked
compassion察And proved that men of station must Conform to the decrees
of fashion。
I showed him where to buy his hat To coat him察trouser him察and boot
him察But no ´ he wouldn't hear of that ´ ;He didn't think the style would
suit him ─
I offered him a county seat察And made no end of an oration察I made it
certainty complete察And introduced the deputation。
But no ´ the clown my prospect blights ´ The worth of birth it surely
teaches。 ;Why should I want to spend my nights In Parliament察a´making
speeches拭
;I haven't never been to school ´ I ain't had not no eddication ´ And I
should surely be a fool To publish that to all the nation ─
I offered him a trotting horse ´ No hack had ever trotted faster ´ I also
offered him察of course察A rare and curious ;old master。;
I offered to procure him weeds ´ Wines fit for one in his position ´ But察
though an ass in all his deeds察He'd learnt the meaning of ;commission。;
He called me ;thief; the other day察And daily from his door he thrusts
me察 Much more of this察 and soon I may Begin to think that BROWN
mistrusts me。
So deaf to all sound Reason's rule This poor uneducated clown is察You
canNOT fancy what a fool Poor rich uneducated BROWN is。

Ballad此Sir Macklin
Of all the youths I ever saw None were so wicked察vain察or silly察So
lost to shame and Sabbath law察As worldly TOM察and BOB察and BILLY。
For every Sabbath day they walked Such was their gay and
thoughtless natur In parks or gardens察where they talked From three to six察
or even later。
SIR MACKLIN was a priest severe In conduct and in conversation察It
did a sinner good to hear Him deal in ratiocination。
He could in every action show Some sin察and nobody could doubt him。
He argued high察he argued low察He also argued round about him。
He wept to think each thoughtless youth Contained of wickedness a
skinful察And burnt to teach the awful truth察That walking out on Sunday's
sinful。
;Oh察youths察─said he察 I grieve to find The course of life you've been
and hit on ´ Sit down察─said he察 and never mind The pennies for the chairs
you sit on。
;My opening head is 'Kensington' How walking there the sinner
hardens察 Which when I have enlarged upon察 I go to 'Secondly' ´ its
'Gardens。'
;My 'Thirdly' comprehendeth 'Hyde' Of Secresy the guilts and
shameses察 My 'Fourthly' ´ 'Park' ´ its verdure wide ´ My 'Fifthly'
comprehends 'St。 James's。'
;That matter settled察 I shall reach The 'Sixthly' in my solemn tether察
And show that what is true of each察Is also true of all察together。
;Then I shall demonstrate to you察 According to the rules of
WHATELY察 That what is true of all察 is true Of each察 considered
separately。;
In lavish stream his accents flow察 TOM察 BOB察 and BILLY dare not
flout him察 He argued high察 he argued low察 He also argued round about
him。
;Ha察 ha ─ he said察 you loathe your ways察 You writhe at these my
words of warning察In agony your hands you raise。; And so they did察for
30
´ Page 31´

they were yawning。
To ;Twenty´firstly; on they go察The lads do not attempt to scout him察
He argued high察he argued low察He also argued round about him。
;Ho察ho ─he cries察 you bow your crests ´ My eloquence has set you
weeping察 In shame you bend upon your breasts ─ 。And so they did察 for
they were sleeping。
He proved them this ´ he proved them that ´ This good but wearisome
ascetic察He jumped and thumped upon his hat察He was so very energetic。
His Bishop at this moment chanced To pass察 and found the road
encumbered察 He noticed how the Churchman danced察 And how his
congregation slumbered。
The hundred and eleventh head The priest completed of his stricture察
;Oh察bosh ─the worthy Bishop said察And walked him off as in the picture。

Ballad此The Yarn Of The ;Nancy
Bell;
'Twas on the shores that round our coast From Deal to Ramsgate span察
That I found alone on a piece of stone An elderly naval man。
His hair was weedy察his beard was long察And weedy and long was he察
And I heard this wight on the shore recite察In a singular minor key此
;Oh察I am a cook and a captain bold察And the mate of the NANCY brig察
And a bo'sun tight察and a midshipmite察And the crew of the captain's gig。;
And he shook
