commanded察with your leave and favour察Humbly to kiss your hand察and
with my tongue To tell the passion of my sovereign's heart察Where fame察
late ent'ring at his heedful ears察 Hath plac'd thy beauty's image and thy
virtue。 QUEEN MARGARET。 King Lewis and Lady Bona察hear me speak
Before you answer Warwick。 His demand Springs not from Edward's well´
meant honest love察But from deceit bred by necessity察For how can tyrants
safely govern home Unless abroad they purchase great alliance拭To prove
him tyrant this reason may suffice察 That Henry liveth still察 but were he
dead察Yet here Prince Edward stands察King Henry's son。 Look therefore察
Lewis察that by this league and marriage Thou draw not on thy danger and
dishonour察For though usurpers sway the rule a while Yet heav'ns are just察
and time suppresseth wrongs。 WARWICK。 Injurious Margaret PRINCE
OF WALES。 And why not Queen拭WARWICK。 Because thy father Henry
did usurp察And thou no more art prince than she is queen。 OXFORD。 Then
Warwick disannuls great John of Gaunt察 Which did subdue the greatest
part of Spain察And察after John of Gaunt察Henry the Fourth察Whose wisdom
was a mirror to the wisest察And察 after that wise prince察 Henry the Fifth察
Who by his prowess conquered all France。 From these our Henry lineally
descends。 WARWICK。 Oxford察how haps it in this smooth discourse You
told not how Henry the Sixth hath lost All that which Henry the Fifth had

gotten拭Methinks these peers of France should smile at that。 But for the
rest此you tell a pedigree Of threescore and two years´ a silly time To make
prescription for a kingdom's worth。 OXFORD。 Why察Warwick察canst thou
speak against thy liege察Whom thou obeyed'st thirty and six years察And not
betray thy treason with a blush拭 WARWICK。 Can Oxford that did ever
fence the right Now buckler falsehood with a pedigree拭For shame Leave
Henry察 and call Edward king。 OXFORD。 Call him my king by whose
injurious doom My elder brother察 the Lord Aubrey Vere察 Was done to
death察and more than so察my father察Even in the downfall of his mellow'd
years察When nature brought him to the door of death拭No察Warwick察no察
while life upholds this arm察 This arm upholds the house of Lancaster。
WARWICK。 And I the house of York。 LEWIS。 Queen Margaret察 Prince
Edward察and Oxford察Vouchsafe at our request to stand aside While I use
further conference with Warwick。 They stand aloofА QUEEN
MARGARET。 Heavens grant that Warwick's words bewitch him not
LEWIS。 Now察 Warwick察 tell me察 even upon thy conscience察 Is Edward
your true king拭 for I were loath To link with him that were not lawful
chosen。 WARWICK。 Thereon I pawn my credit and mine honour。 LEWIS。
But is he gracious in the people's eye拭WARWICK。 The more that Henry
was unfortunate。 LEWIS。 Then further此all dissembling set aside察Tell me
for truth the measure of his love Unto our sister Bona。 WARWICK。 Such
it seems As may beseem a monarch like himself。 Myself have often heard
him say and swear That this his love was an eternal plant Whereof the root
was fix'd in virtue's ground察The leaves and fruit maintain'd with beauty's
sun察Exempt from envy察but not from disdain察Unless the Lady Bona quit
his pain。 LEWIS。 Now察sister察let us hear your firm resolve。 BONA。 Your
grant or your denial shall be mine。 To WARWICKА Yet I confess that
often ere this day察When I have heard your king's desert recounted察Mine
ear hath tempted judgment to desire。 LEWIS。 Then察 Warwick察 thus此 our
sister shall be Edward's。 And now forthwith shall articles be drawn
Touching the jointure that your king must make察Which with her dowry
shall be counterpois'd。 Draw near察Queen Margaret察and be a witness That
Bona shall be wife to the English king。 PRINCE OF WALES。 To Edward察
but not to the English king。 QUEEN MARGARET。 Deceitful Warwick察it

was thy device By this alliance to make void my suit。 Before thy coming察
Lewis was Henry's friend。 LEWIS。 And still is friend to him and Margaret。
But if your title to the crown be weak察As may appear by Edward's good
success察Then 'tis but reason that I be releas'd From giving aid which late I
promised。 Yet shall you have all kindness at my hand That your estate
requires and mine can yield。 WARWICK。 Henry now lives in Scotland at
his case察 Where having nothing察 nothing can he lose。 And as for you
yourself察our quondam queen察You have a father able to maintain you察And
better 'twere you troubled him than France。 QUEEN MARGARET。 Peace察
impudent and shameless Warwick察 Proud setter up and puller down of
kings I will not hence till with my talk and tears察 Both full of truth察 I
make King Lewis behold Thy sly conveyance and thy lord's false love察For
both of you are birds of self´same feather。 POST blowing a horn withinА
LEWIS。 Warwick察this is some post to us or thee。

POST。 My lord ambassador察these letters are for you察Sent from your
brother察Marquis Montague。 These from our King unto your Majesty。 And察
madam察these for you察from whom I know not。 They all read their lettersА
OXFORD。 I like it well that our fair Queen and mistress Smiles at her
news察while Warwick frowns at his。 PRINCE OF WALES。 Nay察mark how
Lewis stamps as he were nettled。 I hope all's for the best。 LEWIS。
Warwick察 what are thy news拭 And yours察 fair Queen拭 QUEEN
MARGARET。 Mine such as fill my heart with unhop'd joys。 WARWICK。
Mine察full of sorrow and heart's discontent。 LEWIS。 What察has your king
married the Lady Grey拭And now察to soothe your forgery and his察Sends
me a paper to persuade me patience拭Is this th' alliance that he seeks with
France拭 Dare he presume to scorn us in this manner拭 QUEEN
MARGARET。 I told your Majesty as much before。 This proveth Edward's
love and Warwick's honesty。 WARWICK。 King Lewis察 I here protest in
sight of heaven察And by the hope I have of heavenly bliss察That I am clear
from this misdeed of Edward's´ No more my king察for he dishonours me察
But most himself察if he could see his shame。 Did I forget that by the house
of York My father came untimely to his death拭 Did I let pass th' abuse
done to my niece拭Did I impale him with the regal crown拭Did I put Henry

on himself for my desert is honour察And to repair my honour lost for him
I here renounce him and return to Henry。 My noble Queen察 let former
grudges pass察And henceforth I am thy true servitor。 I will revenge his
wrong to Lady Bona察 And replant Henry in his former state。 QUEEN
MARGARET。 Warwick察these words have turn'd my hate to love察And I
forgive and quite forget old faults察 And joy that thou becom'st King
Henry's friend。 WARWICK。 So much his friend察ay察his unfeigned friend察
That if King Lewis vouchsafe to furnish us With some few bands of
chosen soldiers察 I'll undertake to land them on our coast And force the
tyrant from his seat by war。 'Tis not his new´made bride shall succour him察
And as for Clarence察 as my letters tell me察 He's very likely now to fall
from him For matching more for wanton lust than honour Or than for
strength and safety of our country。 BONA。 Dear brother察how shall Bona
be reveng'd But by thy help to this distressed queen拭 QUEEN
MARGARET。 Renowned Prince察how shall poor Henry live Unless thou
rescue him from foul despair拭BONA。 My quarrel and this English queen's
are one。 WARWICK。 And mine察fair Lady Bona察joins with yours。 LEWIS。
And mine with hers察and thine察and Margaret's。 Therefore察at last察I firmly
am resolv'd You shall have aid。 QUEEN MARGARET。 Let me give
humble thanks for all at once。 LEWIS。 Then察England's messenger察return
in post And tell false Edward察thy supposed king察That Lewis of France is
sending over masquers To revel it with him and his new bride。 Thou seest
what's past察go fear thy king withal。 BONA。 Tell him察in hope he'll prove a
widower shortly察 I'll wear the willow´garland for his sake。 QUEEN
MARGARET。 Tell him my mourning weeds are laid aside察 And I am
ready to put armour on。 WARWICK。 Tell him from me that he hath done
me wrong察 And therefore I'll uncrown him ere't be long。 There's thy
reward察 be gone。 Exit POST LEWIS。 But察 Warwick察 Thou and Oxford察
with five thousand men察Shall cross the seas and bid false Edward battle此
And察as occasion serves察this noble Queen And Prince shall follow with a
fresh supply。 Yet察ere thou go察but answer me one doubt此What pledge have
we of thy firm loyalty拭WARWICK。 This shall assure my constant loyalty此
