lords察those powers that the Queen Hath rais'd in Gallia have arriv'd our
coast And察 as we hear察 march on to fight with us。 CLARENCE。 A little
gale will soon disperse that cloud And blow it to the source from whence it
came察 Thy very beams will dry those vapours up察 For every cloud
engenders not a storm。 GLOUCESTER。 The Queen is valued thirty
thousand strong察And Somerset察with Oxford察fled to her。 If she have time
to breathe察be well assur'd Her faction will be full as strong as ours。 KING
EDWARD。 are advertis'd by our loving friends That they do hold their
course toward Tewksbury察We察having now the best at Barnet field察Will
thither straight察 for willingness rids way察And as we march our strength
will be augmented In every county as we go along。 Strike up the drum察cry
'Courage' and away。 Exeunt

SCENE IV。 Plains wear Tewksbury
Flourish。 March。 Enter QUEEN MARGARET察 PRINCE EDWARD察
SOMERSET察OXFORD察and SOLDIERS
QUEEN MARGARET。 Great lords察wise men ne'er sit and wail their
loss察But cheerly seek how to redress their harms。 What though the mast
be now blown overboard察The cable broke察the holding´anchor lost察And
half our sailors swallow'd in the flood察Yet lives our pilot still。 Is't meet
that he Should leave the helm and察like a fearful lad察With tearful eyes add
water to the sea And give more strength to that which hath too much察
Whiles察 in his moan察 the ship splits on the rock察 Which industry and
courage might have sav'd拭Ah察what a shame ah察what a fault were this
Say Warwick was our anchor察what of that拭And Montague our top´mast察
what of him拭Our slaught'red friends the tackles察what of these拭Why察is
not Oxford here another anchor拭And Somerset another goodly mast拭The
friends of France our shrouds and tacklings拭And察though unskilful察why
not Ned and I For once allow'd the skilful pilot's charge拭We will not from
the helm to sit and weep察But keep our course察though the rough wind say
no察From shelves and rocks that threaten us with wreck察As good to chide
the waves as speak them fair。 And what is Edward but a ruthless sea拭
What Clarence but a quicksand of deceit拭And Richard but a ragged fatal
rock拭All these the enemies to our poor bark。 Say you can swim察alas察'tis
but a while Tread on the sand察why察there you quickly sink。 Bestride the
rock察 the tide will wash you off察 Or else you famish´ that's a threefold
death。 This speak I察lords察to let you understand察If case some one of you
would fly from us察That there's no hop'd´for mercy with the brothers More
than with ruthless waves察with sands察and rocks。 Why察courage then What
cannot be avoided 'Twere childish weakness to lament or fear。 PRINCE
OF WALES。 Methinks a woman of this valiant spirit Should察if a coward
hear her speak these words察Infuse his breast with magnanimity And make
him naked foil a man´at´arms。 I speak not this as doubting any here察For
did I but suspect a fearful man察He should have leave to go away betimes察
Lest in our need he might infect another And make him of the like spirit to
himself。 If any such be here´ as God forbid Let him depart before we

need his help。 OXFORD。 Women and children of so high a courage察And
warriors faint Why察 'twere perpetual shame。 O brave young Prince thy
famous grandfather Doth live again in thee。 Long mayst thou Eve To bear
his image and renew his glories SOMERSET。 And he that will not fight
for such a hope察Go home to bed and察like the owl by day察If he arise察be
mock'd and wond'red at。 QUEEN MARGARET。 Thanks察gentle Somerset察
sweet Oxford察thanks。 PRINCE OF WALES。 And take his thanks that yet
hath nothing else。
Enter a MESSENGER
MESSENGER。 Prepare you察 lords察 for Edward is at hand Ready to
fight察therefore be resolute。 OXFORD。 I thought no less。 It is his policy To
haste thus fast察to find us unprovided。 SOMERSET。 But he's deceiv'd察we
are in readiness。 QUEEN MARGARET。 This cheers my heart察to see your
forwardness。 OXFORD。 Here pitch our battle察hence we will not budge。
Flourish and march。 Enter察 at a distance察 KING EDWARD察
GLOUCESTER察CLARENCE察and soldiers
KING EDWARD。 Brave followers察 yonder stands the thorny wood
Which察by the heavens' assistance and your strength察Must by the roots be
hewn up yet ere night。 I need not add more fuel to your fire察For well I wot
ye blaze to burn them out。 Give signal to the fight察 and to it察 lords。
QUEEN MARGARET。 Lords察knights察and gentlemen察what I should say
My tears gainsay察for every word I speak察Ye see察I drink the water of my
eye。 Therefore察no more but this此Henry察your sovereign察Is prisoner to the
foe察his state usurp'd察His realm a slaughter´house察his subjects slain察His
statutes cancell'd察 and his treasure spent察 And yonder is the wolf that
makes this spoil。 You fight in justice。 Then察 in God's name察 lords察 Be
valiant察and give signal to the fight。 Alarum察retreat察excursions。 Exeunt

prisoners
KING EDWARD。 Now here a period of tumultuous broils。 Away
with Oxford to Hames Castle straight察 For Somerset察 off with his guilty
head。 Go察bear them hence察I will not hear them speak。 OXFORD。 For my
part察I'll not trouble thee with words。 SOMERSET。 Nor I察but stoop with
patience to my fortune。 Exeunt OXFORD and SOMERSET察 guarded
QUEEN MARGARET。 So part we sadly in this troublous world察To meet
with joy in sweet Jerusalem。 KING EDWARD。 Is proclamation made that
who finds Edward Shall have a high reward察 and he his life拭
GLOUCESTER。 It is察and lo where youthful Edward comes。
Enter soldiers察 with PRINCE EDWARD KING EDWARD。 Bring
forth the gallant察let us hear him speak。 What察can so young a man begin to
prick拭 Edward察 what satisfaction canst thou make For bearing arms察 for
stirring up my subjects察 And all the trouble thou hast turn'd me to拭
PRINCE OF WALES。 Speak like a subject察 proud ambitious York。
Suppose that I am now my father's mouth察Resign thy chair察and where I
stand kneel thou察 Whilst I propose the self´same words to the Which察
traitor察thou wouldst have me answer to。 QUEEN MARGARET。 Ah察that
thy father had been so resolv'd GLOUCESTER。 That you might still have
worn the petticoat And ne'er have stol'n the breech from Lancaster。
PRINCE OF WALES。 Let Aesop fable in a winter's night察 His currish
riddle sorts not with this place。 GLOUCESTER。 By heaven察 brat察 I'll
plague ye for that word。 QUEEN MARGARET。 Ay察thou wast born to be a
plague to men。 GLOUCESTER。 For God's sake察 take away this captive
scold。 PRINCE OF WALES。 Nay察 take away this scolding crookback
rather。 KING EDWARD。 Peace察wilful boy察or I will charm your tongue。
CLARENCE。 Untutor'd lad察thou art too malapert。 PRINCE OF WALES。 I
know my duty察you are all undutiful。 Lascivious Edward察and thou perjur'd
George察And thou misshapen Dick察I tell ye all I am your better察traitors as
ye are察And thou usurp'st my father's right and mine。 KING EDWARD。

deed were by to equal it。 He was a man此this察in respect察a child察And men
