brother Montague shall post to London。 Let noble Warwick察Cobham察and
the rest察Whom we have left protectors of the King察With pow'rful policy
strengthen themselves And trust not simple Henry nor his oaths。
MONTAGUE。 Brother察 I go察 I'll win them察 fear it not。 And thus most

YORK。 Sir john and Sir Hugh Mortimer察mine uncles You are come

JOHN。 She shall not need察we'll meet her in the field。 YORK。 What察with

A woman's general察what should we fear拭。A march afar offАEDWARD。 I

battle straight。 YORK。 Five men to twenty Though the odds be great察I

SCENE III。 Field of battle between Sandal Castle
and Wakefield
Alarum。 Enter RUTLAND and his TUTOR
RUTLAND。 Ah察whither shall I fly to scape their hands拭Ah察tutor察
look where bloody Clifford comes
Enter CLIFFORD and soldiers
CLIFFORD。 Chaplain察 away Thy priesthood saves thy life。 As for
the brat of this accursed duke察Whose father slew my father察he shall die。
TUTOR。 And I察 my lord察will bear him company。 CLIFFORD。 Soldiers察
away with him TUTOR。 Ah察Clifford察murder not this innocent child察Lest
thou be hated both of God and man。 Exit察 forced off by soldiers
CLIFFORD。 How now察is he dead already拭Or is it fear That makes him
close his eyes拭I'll open them。 RUTLAND。 So looks the pent´up lion o'er
the wretch That trembles under his devouring paws察 And so he walks察
insulting o'er his prey察And so he comes察 to rend his limbs asunder。 Ah察
gentle Clifford察 kill me with thy sword察 And not with such a cruel
threat'ning look Sweet Clifford察 hear me speak before I die。 I am too
mean a subject for thy wrath察Be thou reveng'd on men察and let me live。
CLIFFORD。 In vain thou speak'st察 poor boy察 my father's blood Hath
stopp'd the passage where thy words should enter。 RUTLAND。 Then let
my father's blood open it again此He is a man察and察Clifford察cope with him。
CLIFFORD。 Had I thy brethren here察 their lives and thine Were not
revenge sufficient for me察No察if I digg'd up thy forefathers' graves And
hung their rotten coffins up in chains察It could not slake mine ire nor ease
my heart。 The sight of any of the house of York Is as a fury to torment my
soul察And till I root out their accursed line And leave not one alive察I live
in hell。 Therefore´ RUTLAND。 O察let me pray before I take my death To
thee I pray此sweet Clifford察pity me。 CLIFFORD。 Such pity as my rapier's
point affords。 RUTLAND。 I never did thee harm察why wilt thou slay me拭
CLIFFORD。 Thy father hath。 RUTLAND。 But 'twas ere I was born。 Thou
hast one son察for his sake pity me察Lest in revenge thereof察sith God is just察
He be as miserably slain as I。 Ah察let me live in prison all my days察And

when I give occasion of offence Then let me die察 for now thou hast no
cause。 CLIFFORD。 No cause Thy father slew my father察therefore察die。

CLIFFORD。 Plantagenet察 I come察 Plantagenet察And this thy son's blood
cleaving to my blade Shall rust upon my weapon察till thy blood察Congeal'd
with this察do make me wipe off both。 Exit

SCENE IV。 Another part of the field
Alarum。 Enter the DUKE OF YORK
YORK。 The army of the Queen hath got the field。 My uncles both are
slain in rescuing me察And all my followers to the eager foe Turn back and
fly察like ships before the wind察Or lambs pursu'd by hunger´starved wolves。
My sons´ God knows what hath bechanced them察But this I know´ they
have demean'd themselves Like men born to renown by life or death。
Three times did Richard make a lane to me察And thrice cried 'Courage察
father fight it out。' And full as oft came Edward to my side With purple
falchion察 painted to the hilt In blood of those that had encount'red him。
And when the hardiest warriors did retire察Richard cried 'Charge察and give
no foot of ground' And cried 'A crown察or else a glorious tomb A sceptre察
or an earthly sepulchre' With this we charg'd again察 but out alas We
bodg'd again察as I have seen a swan With bootless labour swim against the
tide And spend her strength with over´matching waves。 A short alarum
withinАAh察hark The fatal followers do pursue察And I am faint and cannot
fly their fury察And were I strong察I would not shun their fury。 The sands are
numb'red that make up my life察Here must I stay察and here my life must
end。
Enter QUEEN MARGARET察 CLIFFORD察 NORTHUMBERLAND察
the PRINCE OF WALES察and soldiers
Come察 bloody Clifford察 rough Northumberland察 I dare your
quenchless fury to more rage察 I am your butt察 and I abide your shot。
NORTHUMBERLAND。 Yield to our mercy察 proud Plantagenet。
CLIFFORD。 Ay察 to such mercy as his ruthless arm With downright
payment show'd unto my father。 Now Phaethon hath tumbled from his car察
And made an evening at the noontide prick。 YORK。 My ashes察 as the
phoenix察may bring forth A bird that will revenge upon you all察And in that
hope I throw mine eyes to heaven察Scorning whate'er you can afflict me
with。 Why come you not拭 What multitudes察 and fear拭 CLIFFORD。 So
cowards fight when they can fly no further察So doves do peck the falcon's
piercing talons察 So desperate thieves察 all hopeless of their lives察 Breathe
out invectives 'gainst the officers。 YORK。 O Clifford察 but bethink thee

once again察And in thy thought o'errun my former time察And察if thou canst
for blushing察 view this face察And bite thy tongue that slanders him with
cowardice Whose frown hath made thee faint and fly ere this CLIFFORD。
I will not bandy with thee word for word察 But buckler with thee blows察
twice two for one。 QUEEN MARGARET。 Hold察 valiant Clifford察 for a
thousand causes I would prolong awhile the traitor's life。 Wrath makes him
deaf察 speak thou察 Northumberland。 NORTHUMBERLAND。 Hold察
Clifford do not honour him so much To prick thy finger察though to wound
his heart。 What valour were it察when a cur doth grin察For one to thrust his
hand between his teeth察When he might spurn him with his foot away拭It is
war's prize to take all vantages察And ten to one is no impeach of valour。
They lay hands on YORK察who strugglesАCLIFFORD。 Ay察ay察so strives
the woodcock with the gin。 NORTHUMBERLAND。 So doth the cony
struggle in the net。 YORK。 So triumph thieves upon their conquer'd booty察
So true men yield察with robbers so o'er´match'd。 NORTHUMBERLAND。
What would your Grace have done unto him now拭QUEEN MARGARET。
Brave warriors察 Clifford and Northumberland察 Come察 make him stand
upon this molehill here That raught at mountains with outstretched arms察
Yet parted but the shadow with his hand。 What察was it you that would be
England's king拭 Was't you that revell'd in our parliament And made a
preachment of your high descent拭Where are your mess of sons to back
you now拭 The wanton Edward and the lusty George拭And where's that
valiant crook´back prodigy察Dicky your boy察that with his grumbling voice
Was wont to cheer his dad in mutinies拭Or察with the rest察where is your
darling Rutland拭 Look察 York此 I stain'd this napkin with the blood That
valiant Clifford with his rapier's point Made issue from the bosom of the
boy察And if thine eyes can water for his death察I give thee this to dry thy
cheeks withal。 Alas察poor York but that I hate thee deadly察I should lament
thy miserable state。 I prithee grieve to make me merry察York。 What察hath
thy fiery heart so parch'd thine entrails That not a tear can fall for
Rutland's death拭Why art thou patient察man拭Thou shouldst be mad察And I
to make thee mad do mock thee thus。 Stamp察rave察and fret察that I may sing
and dance。 Thou wouldst be fee'd察I see察to make me sport察York cannot
speak unless he wear a crown。 A crown for York and察lords察bow low to
