Hengist察 Horsa察 and his people察 drove them to the isle of Thanet察 and
thrice enclosed them within it察and beset them on the Western side。
The Saxons now despatched deputies to Germany to solicit large
reinforcements察and an additional number of ships此having obtained these察
they fought against the kings and princes of Britain察 and sometimes

extended their boundaries by victory察and sometimes were conquered and
driven back。
44。 Four times did Vortimer valorously encounter the enemy撮1А the
first has been mentioned察the second was upon the river Darent察the third

After a short interval Vortimer died察before his decease察anxious for the
future prosperity of his country察he charged his friends to inter his body at
the entrance of the Saxon port察viz。 upon the rock where the Saxons first
landed察 for though察─said he察 they may inhabit other parts of Britain察yet

45。 After this the barbarians became firmly incorporated察 and were
assisted by foreign pagans察for Vortigern was their friend察on account of
the daughter* of Hengist察whom he so much loved察that no one durst fight
against him´in the meantime they soothed the imprudent king察and whilst

And let him that reads understand察 that the Saxons were victorious察 and

sins of the Britons此God so permitting it。
For what wise man will resist the wholesome counsel of God拭 The
Almighty is the King of kings察and the Lord of lords察ruling and judging

After the death of Vortimer察 Hengist being strengthened by new
accessions察collected his ships察and calling his leaders together察consulted
by what stratagem they might overcome Vortigern and his army察 with
insidious intention they sent messengers to the king察with offers of peace

46。 Hengist察 under pretence of ratifying the treaty察 prepared an
entertainment察 to which he invited the king察 the nobles察 and military
officers察in number about three hundred察speciously concealing his wicked
intention察he ordered three hundred Saxons to conceal each a knife under
his feet察 and to mix with the Britons察 and when察─ said he察 they are
sufficiently inebriated察&c。 cry out察'Nimed eure Saxes' then let each draw
his knife察and kill his man察but spare the king察on account of his marriage

The king with his company察appeared at the feast察and mixing with the
Saxons察 who察 whilst they spoke peace with their tongues察 cherished
treachery in their hearts察each man was placed next to his enemy。
After they had eaten and drunk察and were much intoxicated察Hengist
suddenly vociferated察 Nimed eure Saxes ─ and instantly his adherents
drew their knives察 and rushing upon the Britons察 each slew him that sat
next to him察and there was slain three hundred of the nobles of Vortigern。

47。 St。 Germanus admonished Vortigern to turn to the true God察 and
abstain from all unlawful intercourse with his daughter察but the unhappy
wretch fled for refuge to the province Guorthegirnaim* so called from his
own name察where he concealed himself with his wives此but St。 Germanus
followed him with all the British clergy察and upon a rock prayed for his
sins during forty days and forty nights。 * A district of Radnorshire察

The Blessed man was unanimously chosen commander against the
Saxons。 And then察not by the clang of trumpets察but by praying察singing
hallelujah察and by the cries of the army to God察the enemies were routed察
and driven even to the sea。* *V。R。 This paragraph is omitted in the MSS。
Again Vortigern ignominiously flew from St。 Germanus to the
kingdom of the Dimetae察 where察 on the river Towy* he built a castle察
which he named Cair Guothergirn。 The saint察as usual察followed him there察

nights。 On the third night察at the third hour察fire fell suddenly from heaven察
and totally burned the castle。 Vortigern察the daughter of Hengist察his other
wives察and all the inhabitants察both men and women察miserably perished此
such was the end of this unhappy king察as we find written in the life of St。

47。 Others assure us察that being hated by all the people of Britain察for
having received the Saxons察and being publicly charged by St。 Germanus
and the clergy in the sight of God察he betook himself to flight察and察that
deserted and a wanderer察he sought a place of refuge察till broken hearted察
he made an ignominious end。
Some accounts state察that the earth opened and swallowed him up察on
the night his castle was burned察 as no remains were discovered the
following morning察either of him察or of those who were burned with him。
