King Edward the Third
SCENE I。 The Same。 Gardens of the Castle。
Enter Lodowick。А
LODOWICK。 I might perceive his eye in her eye lost察His ear to drink
her sweet tongue's utterance察And changing passion察like inconstant clouds
That rack upon the carriage of the winds察Increase and die in his disturbed
cheeks。 Lo察when she blushed察even then did he look pale察As if her cheeks
by some enchanted power Attracted had the cherry blood from his此Anon察
with reverent fear when she grew pale察 His cheeks put on their scarlet
ornaments察But no more like her oriental red察Than Brick to Coral or live
things to dead。 Why did he then thus counterfeit her looks拭 If she did
blush察twas tender modest shame察Being in the sacred presence of a King察
If he did blush察twas red immodest shame察To veil his eyes amiss察being a
king察 If she looked pale察 twas silly woman's fear察 To bear her self in
presence of a king察If he looked pale察it was with guilty fear察To dote amiss察
being a mighty king。 Then察 Scottish wars察 farewell察 I fear twill prove A
lingering English siege of peevish love。 Here comes his highness察walking
all alone。
Enter King Edward。А
KING EDWARD。 She is grown more fairer far since I came hither察
Her voice more silver every word than other察Her wit more fluent。What a
strange discourse Unfolded she of David and his Scots 'Even thus'察quoth
she察 'he spake'察 and then spoke broad察 With epithites and accents of the
Scot察But somewhat better than the Scot could speak此'And thus'察quoth she察
and answered then her self For who could speak like her but she her self´
´ Breathes from the wall an Angel's note from Heaven Of sweet defiance
to her barbarous foes。 When she would talk of peace察 me thinks察 her
tongue Commanded war to prison察when of war察It wakened Caesar from
his Roman grave察 To hear war beautified by her discourse。 Wisdom is
foolishness but in her tongue察Beauty a slander but in her fair face察There
is no summer but in her cheerful looks察 Nor frosty winter but in her
disdain。 I cannot blame the Scots that did besiege her察For she is all the
Treasure of our land察But call them cowards察that they ran away察Having so
rich and fair a cause to stay。 Art thou there察LodowickGive me ink and

paper。
LODOWICK。 I will察my liege。
KING EDWARD。 And bid the Lords hold on their play at Chess察For
we will walk and meditate alone。
LODOWICK。 I will察my sovereign。
Exit Lodowick。А
KING EDWARD。 This fellow is well read in poetry察And hath a lusty
and persuasive spirit察I will acquaint him with my passion察Which he shall
shadow with a veil of lawn察Through which the Queen of beauties Queen
shall see Her self the ground of my infirmity。
Enter Lodowick。А
KING EDWARD。 hast thou pen察ink察and paper ready察Lodowick拭
LODOWICK。 Ready察my liege。
KING EDWARD。 Then in the summer arbor sit by me察 Make it our
counsel house or cabinet此 Since green our thoughts察 green be the
conventicle察Where we will ease us by disburdening them。 Now察Lodowick察
invocate some golden Muse察To bring thee hither an enchanted pen察That
may for sighs set down true sighs indeed察Talking of grief察to make thee
ready groanAnd when thou writest of tears察encouch the word Before and
after with such sweet laments察That it may raise drops in a Tartar's eye察
And make a flintheart Scythian pitiful察For so much moving hath a Poet's
pen此 Then察 if thou be a Poet察 move thou so察 And be enriched by thy
sovereign's love。 For察if the touch of sweet concordant strings Could force
attendance in the ears of hell察How much more shall the strains of poets'
wit Beguile and ravish soft and humane minds拭
LODOWICK。 To whom察my Lord察shall I direct my stile拭
KING EDWARD。 To one that shames the fair and sots the wise察
Whose bod is an abstract or a brief察 Contains each general virtue in the
world。 Better than beautiful thou must begin察Devise for fair a fairer word
than fair察 And every ornament that thou wouldest praise察 Fly it a pitch
above the soar of praise。 For flattery fear thou not to be convicted察For察
were thy admiration ten times more察 Ten times ten thousand more the
worth exceeds Of that thou art to praise察thy praises worth。 Begin察I will to
contemplate the while此Forget not to set down察how passionate察How heart

sick察and how full of languishment察Her beauty makes me。
LODOWICK。 Write I to a woman拭
KING EDWARD。 What beauty else could triumph over me察Or who
but women do our love lays greet拭 What察 thinkest thou I did bid thee
praise a horse拭
LODOWICK。 Of what condition or estate she is察Twere requisite that I
should know察my Lord。
KING EDWARD。 Of such estate察 that hers is as a throne察 And my
estate the footstool where she treads此 Then maist thou judge what her
condition is By the proportion of her mightiness。 Write on察while I peruse
her in my thoughts。 Her voice to music or the nightingale To music
every summer leaping swain Compares his sunburnt lover when she
speaks察And why should I speak of the nightingale拭The nightingale sings
of adulterate wrong察And that察compared察is too satyrical察For sin察though
sin察would not be so esteemed察But察rather察virtue sin察sin virtue deemed。
Her hair察 far softer than the silk worm's twist察 Like to a flattering glass察
doth make more fair The yellow Amberlike a flattering glass Comes in
too soon察for察writing of her eyes察I'll say that like a glass they catch the
sun察And thence the hot reflection doth rebound Against the breast察 and
burns my heart within。 Ah察what a world of descant makes my soul Upon
this voluntary ground of love Come察Lodowick察hast thou turned thy ink
to gold拭If not察write but in letters Capital My mistress' name察and it will
gild thy paper此Read察Lord察read察Fill thou the empty hollows of mine ears
With the sweet hearing of thy poetry。
LODOWICK。 I have not to a period brought her praise。
KING EDWARD。 Her praise is as my love察 both infinite察 Which
apprehend such violent extremes察That they disdain an ending period。 Her
beauty hath no match but my affection察Hers more than most察mine most
and more than more此Hers more to praise than tell the sea by drops察Nay察
more than drop the massy earth by sands察And sand by sand print them in
memory此 Then wherefore talkest thou of a period To that which craves
unended admiration拭Read察let us hear。
LODOWICK。 'More fair and chaste than is the queen of shades'
KING EDWARD。 That line hath two faults察 gross and palpable此
16
´ Page 17´
King Edward the Third
Comparest thou her to the pale queen of night察Who察 being set in dark察
seems therefore light拭What is she察when the sun lifts up his head察But like
a fading taper察 dim and dead拭My love shall brave the eye of heaven at
noon察And察being unmasked察outshine the golden sun。
LODOWICK。 What is the other fault察my sovereign Lord拭
KING EDWARD。 Read o'er the line again。
LODOWICK。 'More fair and chaste'
KING EDWARD。 I did not bid thee talk of chastity察To ransack so the
treasure of her mind察 For I had rather have her chased than chaste。 Out
with the moon line察I will none of it察And let me have her likened to the
sun此Say she hath thrice more splendour than the sun察That her perfections
emulate the sun察That she breeds sweets as plenteous as the sun察That she
doth thaw cold winter like the sun察That she doth cheer fresh summer like
the sun察The she doth dazzle gazers like the sun察And察in this application to
the sun察 Bid her be free and general as the sun察 Who smiles upon the
basest weed that grows As lovingly as on the fragrant rose。 Let's see what
follows that same moonlight line。
LODOWICK。 'More fair and chaste than is the queen of shades察More
bold in constance'
KING EDWARD。 In constance than who拭
