ty察and keep the soul's perception bright and quick to the sounds from above。 SECOND TRACTATE。
THE ORIGIN AND ORDER OF THE BEINGS。 FOLLOWING ON THE FIRST。
1。 The One is all things and no one of them察the source of all things is not all things察all things are its possession´ running back察so to speak察to it´ or察more correctly察not yet so察they will be。 But a universe from an unbroken unity察in which there appears no diversity察not even duality拭 It is precisely because that is nothing within the One that all things are from it此in order that Being may be brought about察the source must be no Being but Being's generator察in what is to be thought of as the primal act of generation。 Seeking nothing察possessing nothing察lacking nothing察the One is perfect and察in our metaphor察has overflowed察and its exuberance has produced the new此this product has turned again to its begetter and been filled and has become its contemplator and so an Intellectual´Principle。 That station towards the one the fact that something exists in presence of the OneАestablishes Being察that vision directed upon the One establishes the Intellectual´Principle察standing towards the One to the end of vision察it is simultaneously Intellectual´Principle and Being察and察attaining resemblance in virtue of this vision察it repeats the act of the One in pouring forth a vast power。 This second outflow is a Form or Idea representing the Divine Intellect as the Divine Intellect represented its own prior察The One。 This active power sprung from essence from the Intellectual´Principle considered as BeingАis Soul。 Soul arises as the idea and act of the motionless Intellectual´Principle´ which itself sprang from its own motionless prior´ but the soul's operation is not similarly motionless察its image is generated from its movement。 It takes fulness by looking to its source察but it generates its image by adopting another察a downward察movement。 This image of Soul is Sense and Nature察the vegetal principle。 Nothing察however察is completely severed from its prior。 Thus the human Soul appears to reach away as far down as to the vegetal order此in some sense it does察since the life of growing things is within its province察but it is not present entire察when it has reached the vegetal order it is there in the sense that having moved thus far downwards it produces´ by its outgoing and its tendency towards the less good´ another hypostasis or form of being just as its prior the loftier phase of the Soul is produced from the Intellectual´Principle which yet remains in untroubled self´possession。 2。 To resume此there is from the first principle to ultimate an outgoing in which unfailingly each principle retains its own seat while its offshoot takes another rank察a lower察though on the other hand every being is in identity with its prior as long as it holds that contact。 In the case of soul entering some vegetal form察what is there is one phase察the more rebellious and less intellectual察outgone to that extreme察in a soul entering an animal察the faculty of sensation has been dominant and brought it there察in soul entering man察the movement outward has either been wholly of its reasoning part or has come from the Intellectual´Principle in the sense that the soul察possessing that principle as immanent to its being察has an inborn desire of intellectual activity and of movement in general。 But察looking more minutely into the matter察when shoots or topmost boughs are lopped from some growing thing察where goes the soul that was present in them拭Simply察whence it came此soul never knew spatial separation and therefore is always within the source。 If you cut the root to pieces察or burn it察where is the life that was present there拭In the soul察which never went outside of itself。 No doubt察despite this permanence察the soul must have been in something if it reascends察and if it does not察it is still somewhere察it is in some other vegetal soul此but all this means merely that it is not crushed into some one spot察if a Soul´power reascends察it is within the Soul´power preceding it察that in turn can be only in the soul´power prior again察the phase reaching upwards to the Intellectual´Principle。 Of course nothing here must be understood spatially此Soul never was in space察and the Divine Intellect察again察is distinguished from soul as being still more free。 Soul thus is nowhere but in the Principle which has that characteristic existence at once nowhere and everywhere。 If the soul on its upward path has halted midway before wholly achieving the supreme heights察it has a mid´rank life and has centred itself upon the mid´phase of its being。 All in that mid´region is Intellectual´Principle not wholly itself´ nothing else because deriving thence and therefore of that name and rankВ察yet not that because the Intellectual´Principle in giving it forth is not merged into it。 There exists察thus察a life察as it were察of huge extension察a total in which each several part differs from its next察all making a self´continuous whole under a law of discrimination by which the various forms of things arise with no effacement of any prior in its secondary。 But does this Soul´phase in the vegetal order察produce nothing拭 It engenders precisely the Kind in which it is thus present此how察is a question to be handled from another starting´point。 THIRD TRACTATE。
THE KNOWING HYPOSTASES AND THE TRANSCENDENT。
1。 Are we to think that a being knowing itself must contain diversity察that self´knowledge can be affirmed only when some one phase of the self perceives other phases察and that therefore an absolutely simplex entity would be equally incapable of introversion and of self´awareness拭 No此a being that has no parts or phases may have this consciousness察in fact there would be no real self´knowing in an entity presented as knowing itself in virtue of being a compound´ some single element in it perceiving other elements´ as we may know our own form and entire bodily organism by sense´perception此such knowing does not cover the whole field察the knowing element has not had the required cognisance at once of its associates and of itself察this is not the self´knower asked for察it is merely something that knows something else。 Either we must exhibit the self´knowing of an uncompounded being´ and show how that is possible´ or abandon the belief that any being can possess veritable self´cognition。 To abandon the belief is not possible in view of the many absurdities thus entailed。 It would be already absurd enough to deny this power to the soul or mind察but the very height of absurdity to deny it to the nature of the Intellectual´Principle察presented thus as knowing the rest of things but not attaining to knowledge察or even awareness察of itself。 It is the province of sense and in some degree of understanding and judgement察but not of the Intellectual´Principle察to handle the external察though whether the Intellectual´Principle holds the knowledge of these things is a question to be examined察but it is obvious that the Intellectual´Principle must have knowledge of the Intellectual objects。 Now察can it know those objects alone or must it not simultaneously know itself察the being whose function it is to know just those things拭Can it have self´knowledge in the sense dismissed above as inadequateАof knowing its content while it ignores itself拭Can it be aware of knowing its members and yet remain in ignorance of its own knowing self拭Self and content must be simultaneously present此the method and degree of this knowledge we must now consider。 2。 We begin with the soul察asking whether it is to be allowed self´knowledge and what the knowing principle in it would be and how operating。 The sense´principle in it we may at once decide察takes cognisance only of the external察even in any awareness of events within the body it occupies察this is still the perception of something external to a principle dealing with those bodily conditions not as within but as beneath itself。 The reasoning´principle in the Soul acts upon the representations standing before it as the result of sense´perception察these it judges察combining察distinguishing此or it may also observe the impressions察so to speak察rising from the Intellectual´Principle察and has the same power of handling these察and reasoning will develop to wisdom where it recognizes the new and late´coming impressions those of senseАand adapts them察so to speak察to those it holds from long before´ the act which may be described as the soul's Reminiscence。 So far as this察the efficacy of the Intellectual´Principle in the Soul certainly reaches察but is there also introversion and self´cognition or is that power to be reserved strictly for the Divine Mind拭 If we accord self´knowing to this phase of the soul we make it an Intellectual´Principle and will have to show what distinguishes it from its prior察if we refuse it self´knowing察all our thought brings us step by step to some principle which has this power察and we must discover what such self´knowing consists in。 If察again察we do allow self´knowledge in the lower we must examine the question of degree察for if there is no difference of degree察then the reasoning principle in soul is the Intellectual´Principle unalloyed。 We ask察then察whether the understanding principle in the soul has equally the power of turning inwards upon itself or whether it has no more than that of comprehending the impressions察superior and inferior察which it receives。 The first stage is to discover what this comprehension is。 3。 Sense sees a man and transmits the impression to the understanding。 What does the understanding say拭It has nothing to say as yet察it accepts and waits察unless察rather察it questions within itself ;Who is this拭─ someone it has met before´ and then察drawing on memory察says察 Socrates。; If it should go on to develop the impression received察it distinguishes various elements in what the representative faculty has set before it察supposing it to say ;Socrates察if the man is good察─then察while it has spoken upon informat
