erceptibles of that realm enter into cognisance in a way of their own察since they are not material察while the sensible sense here´ so distinguished as dealing with corporeal objects´ is fainter than the perception belonging to that higher world察the man of this sphere has sense´perception because existing in a less true degree and taking only enfeebled images of things There´ perceptions here are Intellections of the dimmer order察and the Intellections There are vivid perceptions。 8。 So much for the thing of sense察but it would appear that the prototype There of the living form察the universal horse察must look deliberately towards this sphere察and察that being so察the idea of horse must have been worked out in order there be a horse here拭 Yet what was that there to present the idea of the horse it was desired to produce拭Obviously the idea of horse must exist before there was any planning to make a horse察it could not be thought of in order to be made察there must have been horse unproduced before that which was later to come into being。 If察then察the thing existed before it was produced´ if it cannot have been thought of in order to its production´ the Being that held the horse as There held it in presence without any looking to this sphere察it was not with intent to set horse and the rest in being here that they were contained There察it is that察the universal existing察the reproduction followed of necessity since the total of things was not to halt at the Intellectual。 Who was there to call a halt to a power capable at once of self´concentration and of outflow拭 But how come these animals of earth to be There拭What have they to do within God拭Reasoning beings察all very well察but this host of the unreasoning察what is there august in them拭Surely the very contrary拭 The answer is that obviously the unity of our universe must be that of a manifold since it is subsequent to that unity´absolute察otherwise it would be not next to that but the very same thing。 As a next it could not hold the higher rank of being more perfectly a unity察it must fall short此since the best is a unity察inevitably there must be something more than unity察for deficiency involves plurality。 But why should it not be simply a dyad拭 Because neither of the constituents could ever be a pure unity察but at the very least a duality and so progressively in an endless dualizationА Besides察in that first duality of the hypothesis there would be also movement and rest察Intellect and the life included in Intellect察all´embracing Intellect and life complete。 That means that it could not be one Intellect察it must be Intellect agglomerate including all the particular intellects察a thing therefore as multiple as all the Intellects and more so察and the life in it would nat be that of one soul but of all the souls with the further power of producing the single souls此it would be the entire living universe containing much besides man察for if it contained only man察man would be alone here。 9。 Admitted察then´ it will be said´ for the nobler forms of life察but how can the divine contain the mean察the unreasoning拭The mean is the unreasoning察since value depends upon reason and the worth of the intellective implies worthlessness where intellection is lacking。 Yet how can there be question of the unreasoning or unintellective when all particulars exist in the divine and come forth from it拭 In taking up the refutation of these objections察we must insist upon the consideration that neither man nor animals here can be thought of as identical with the counterparts in the higher realm察those ideal forms must be taken in a larger way。 And again the reasoning thing is not of that realm此here the reasoning察There the pre´reasoning。 Why then does man alone reason here察the others remaining reasonless拭 Degrees of reasoning here correspond to degrees of Intellection in that other sphere察as between man and the other living beings There察and those others do in some measure act by understanding。 But why are they not at man's level of reason此why also the difference from man to man拭 We must reflect that察since the many forms of lives are movements´ and so with the Intellections´ they cannot be identical此there must be different lives察distinct intellections察degrees of lightsomeness and clarity此there must be firsts察seconds察thirds察determined by nearness to the Firsts。 This is how some of the Intellections are gods察others of a secondary order having what is here known as reason察while others again belong to the so´called unreasoning此but what we know here as unreasoning was There a Reason´Principle察the unintelligent was an Intellect察the Thinker of Horse was Intellect and the Thought察Horse察was an Intellect。 But it will be objectedАif this were a matter of mere thinking we might well admit that the intellectual concept察remaining concept察should take in the unintellectual察but where concept is identical with thing how can the one be an Intellection and the other without intelligence拭Would not this be Intellect making itself unintelligent拭 No此the thing is not unintelligent察it is Intelligence in a particular mode察corresponding to a particular aspect of Life察and just as life in whatever form it may appear remains always life察so Intellect is not annulled by appearing in a certain mode。 Intellectual´Principle adapted to some particular living being does not cease to be the Intellectual´Principle of all察including man此take it where you will察every manifestation is the whole察though in some special mode察the particular is produced but the possibility is of all。 In the particular we see the Intellectual´Principle in realization察the realized is its latest phase察in one case the last aspect is ;horse;察at ;horse; ended the progressive outgoing towards the lesser forms of life察as in another case it will end at something lower still。 The unfolding of the powers of this Principle is always attended by some abandonment in regard to the highest察the outgoing is by loss察and by this loss the powers become one thing or another according to the deficiency of the life´form produced by the failing principle察it is then that they find the means of adding various requisites察the safeguards of the life becoming inadequate there appear nail察talon察fang察horn。 Thus the Intellectual´Principle by its very descent is directed towards the perfect sufficiency of the natural constitution察finding there within itself the remedy of the failure。 10。 But failure There拭What can defensive horns serve to There拭To sufficiency as living form察to completeness。 That principle must be complete as living form察complete as Intellect察complete as life察so that if it is not to be one thing it may be another。 Its characteristic difference is in this power of being now this察now that察so that察summing all察it may be the completest life´form察Intelligence complete察life in greatest fulness with each of the particulars complete in its degree while yet察over all that multiplicity察unity reigns。 If all were one identity察the total could not contain this variety of forms察there would be nothing but a self´sufficing unity。 Like every compound it must consist of things progressively differing in form and safeguarded in that form。 This is in the very nature of shape and Reason´Principle察a shape察that of man let us suppose察must include a certain number of differences of part but all dominated by a unity察there will be the noble and the inferior察eye and finger察but all within a unity察the part will be inferior in comparison with the total but best in its place。 The Reason´Principle察too察is at once the living form and something else察something distinct from the being of that form。 It is so with virtue also察it contains at once the universal and the particular察and the total is good because the universal is not differentiated。 11。 The very heavens察patently multiple察cannot be thought to disdain any form of life since this universe holds everything。 Now how do these things come to be here拭Does the higher realm contain all of the lower拭 All that has been shaped by Reason´Principle and conforms to Idea。 But察having fire warmthАand water察it will certainly have vegetation察how does vegetation exist There拭Earth察too拭either these are alive or they are There as dead things and then not everything There has life。 How in sum can the things of this realm be also There拭 Vegetal life we can well admit察for the plant is a Reason´Principle established in life。 If in the plant the Reason´Principle察entering Matter and constituting the plant察is a certain form of life察a definite soul察then察since every Reason´Principle is a unity察then either this of plant´life is the primal or before it there is a primal plant察source of its being此that first plant would be a unity察those here察being multiple察must derive from a unity。 This being so察that primal must have much the truer life and be the veritable plant察the plants here deriving from it in the secondary and tertiary degree and living by a vestige of its life。 But earth察how is there earth There此what is the being of earth and how are we to represent to ourselves the living earth of that realm拭 First察what is it察what the mode of its being拭 Earth察here and There alike察must possess shape and a Reason´Principle。 Now in the case of the vegetal察the Reason´Principle of the plant here was found to be living in that higher realm此is there such a Reason´Principle in our earth拭 Take the most earthy of things found shaped in earth and they exhibit察even they察the indwelling earth´principle。 The growing and shaping of stones察the internal moulding of mountains as they rise察reveal the working of an ensouled Reason´Principle fashioning them from within and bringing them to that shape此this察we must take it察is the creative earth´principle corresponding to what we call the specific principle of a tree察what we know as earth is like the wood of the tree察to cut out a stone is like lopping a twig from a tree察except of course that there is no hurt done察the stone remaining a member of the earth as the twig察uncut察of the tree。 Realizing thus that the creative force inherent in our earth is life within a Reason´Principle察we
