eyes　　　　　averted；　　　seemed　　　　　　in　　the　　　act　　of　　　extinguishing　　　　　　a　　dying　　　　lamp　　　　as

constructed　under　the　direction　and　at　the　sole　expense　of　Mr。　Ratcliffe。
