Then Disappointment's blighting breath Breathes o'er him�察�and he droops 

to   death�察  �While   the   Destroyer   glideth   by�察�And   smiles�察  �as   if   in   mockery。 

How   strong   a   hand   hath   Time�   �Fame   wins          The   eager   youth   to   her 

embrace�察�With tameless ardour he begins�察                �And follows up the bootless 

race�察�Ah� �bootlessfor�察�as on he hies�察�With equal speed the phantom flies�察�

Till youth�察�and strength�察�and vigour gone�察�He faints�察�and sinks�察�and dies 

unknown�察�While the Destroyer passeth by�察�And smiles�察�as if in mockery。 

Gaze�察  �stranger�察  �on   the   scene   below�察  �'Tis   scarce   a   century   ago�察   �Since 

here abode another race�察�The men of tomahawk and bow�察                        �The savage 

sons of war and chase�察�Yet where�察�ah� �where�察�abide they now�拭�Go search�察�

and see if thou canst find�察�One trace which they have left behind�察�A single 

mound�察     �or  mossy   grave�察    �That   holds   the  ashes    of  the  brave�察  �A   single 

lettered stone to say That they have lived�察�and passed away。 Men soon will 

cease to name their name�察�Oblivion soon will quench their fame�察�And the 

wild story of their fate�察�Will yet be subject of debate�察�'Twixt antiquarians 

sage and able�察�Who doubt if it be truth or fable。 



                                            VIII。 



     I said I minded well the time�察          �When first beside yon stream I stood�察�

Then one interminable wood�察�In its unbounded breadth sublime�察                      �And in 

its loneliness profound�察�Spread like a leafy sea around。 To one of foreign 

land   and   birth�察  �Nursed   'mid   the   loveliest   scenes   of   earth�察  �But   now   from 

home and friends exiled�察�Such wilderness were doubly wild�察�I thought it 

so�察�and scarce could I My tears repress�察�when standing by The river's brink�察�

I thought of mine Own native stream�察�the glorious Rhine� �For�察�near to it�察�

with   loving   eye�察  �My   mother   watched   my   infancy�察  �Along   its   banks   my 

childhood strayed�察�With its strong waves my boyhood played。 And I could 

see�察  �in   memory�察  �still   My   father's   cottage   on   the   hill�察  �With   green   vines 

trailing round and o'er Wall�察�roof and casement�察�porch and door�此�Yet soon I 

learned yon stream to bless�察�And love the wooded wilderness。 I could not 

then have told thee how The change came o'er my heart�察�but now I know

full well the charm that wrought�察�Into my soul�察�the spell of thought Of 

tender�察�pensive thought�察�which made Me love the forest's deepest shade�察�

And listen�察�with delighted ear�察�To the low voice of waters near�察�As gliding�察�

gushing�察�gurgling by�察�They utter their sweet minstrelsy。 I scarce need give 

that _charm_ a name�察�Thy heart�察�I know�察�hath felt the same�察�Ah� �where is 

mind�察�or heart�察�or soul�察�That has not bowed to its control�拭�

     See�察  �where   yon   towering�察  �rocky   ledge�察  �Hangs   jutting   o'er   the   river's 

edge�察�There channelled dark�察�and dull�察�and deep�察�The lazy�察�lagging waters 

sleep�察�Thence follow�察�with thine eagle sight�察�A double stone's cast to the 

right�察�Mark where   a white´walled   cottage stands�察�Devised   and reared by 

cunning hands�察�A stately pile�察�and fair to see�               �The chisel's touch�察�and 

pencil's trace�察     �Have blent for it a goodly grace�察�And yet�察�it much less 

pleaseth me�察�Than did the simple rustic cot�察�Which occupied of yore that 

spot。 For�察�'neath its humble shelter�察�grew The fairest flower that e'er drank 

dew�察�A lone exotic of the wood�察�The fairy of the solitude�察�Who dwelt amid 

its loneliness To brighten�察�beautify�察�and bless。 The summer sky's serenest 

blue�察 �Would   best   portray   her   eye's   soft   hue�察  �From   her   white   brow   were 

backward rolled Long curls of mingled light and gold�察�The flush upon her 

cheek of snow�察�Had shamed the rose's harsher glow�察�And haughty love had�察�

haughtier grown�察�To own her breast his fairest throne。 The eye that once 

behold her�察�ne'er        Could lose her image��firm and bright�察�All´beautiful�察�

and     pure�察   �and    clear�察  �'Twas    stamped      upon    th'   enamoured       sight�察�

Unchangeable�察  �for   ever   fair�察  �Above   decay�察  �it   lingered   there�   �As   it   has 

lingered     on   mine   own�察   �These    many     years�察  �till  it  has  grown�察  �In   its 

mysterious strength�察�to be A portion of my soul and me。

     Not in the peopled solitude          Of cities�察�does true love belong�察�For it is 

of A thoughtful mood�察         �And thought abides not with the throng。 Nor is it

won by glittering wealth�察          �By cunning�察�nor device of art�察�Unheralded�察�by 

silent   stealth�察    �It   wins   its   way   into   the   heart。   And   once   the   soul   has 

known its dream�察�Thenceforth its empire is supreme�察�For heart�察�and brain�察�

and   soul�察 �and   will�察�Are bowed by  its   subduing   thrill。  My  love�察 �alas�   �not 

born to bless�察�Had birth in nature's loneliness�察�And held�察�at first�察�as a sweet 

spell�察     �It   grew   in   strength�察  �till   it   became   A   spirit�察  �which   I   could   not 

quell�察     �A quenchlessa volcanic flame�察�Which�察�without pause�察�or time 

of rest�察�Must burn for ever in my breast。 Yet how ecstatically sweet�察�Was 

its   first  soft  tumultuous     beat�   �I  little  thought    that  beat   could   be   The 

harbinger of misery�察�And daily�察�when the morning beam Dawned earliest 

on wood   and stream�察�When�察  �from  each brake   and bush were   heard�察�The 

hum   of   bee�察  �and   chirp   of   bird�察  �From   these�察  �earth's   matin   songs�察  �my   ear 

Would   turn�察  �a   sweeter   voice   to hear A voice�察  �whose   tones the   very  air 

Seemed       trembling     with   delight   to  bear�察  �From     leafy  wood�察    �and   misty 

stream�察�From bush�察�and brake�察�and morning beam�察�Would turn away  my 

wandering eye�察�A dearer object to descry�察�Till voice so sweet�察�and form so 

bright�察�Grew part of hearing and of sight。

     Yet my fond love I never told�察            �But kept it�察�as the miser keeps�察          �In 

his   rude   hut�察  �his   hoarded   heaps   Of   gleaming   gems�察  �and   glittering   gold�此�

Gloating in secret o'er the prize�察�He fears to show to other eyes�察�And so 

passed many months away�察�Till once I heard a comrade say�此 �To´morrow 

brings her bridal day�察�Mazelli leaves the greenwood bower�察�Where she has 

grown its fairest flower�察�To bless�察�with her bright�察�sunny smile�察�A stranger 

from a distant isle�察�Whom love has lured across the sea�察                     �O'er hill and 

glen�察�through wood and wild�察�Far from his lordly home�察�to be                        Lord of 

the forest's fairest child。; It was as when a thunder peal                Bursts�察�crashing 

from a cloudless sky�察�It caused my brain and heart to reel                      And throb�察�

with   speechless   agony�此  �Yet�察  �when   wild   Passion's   trance   was   o'er�察  �And 

Thought resumed her sway once more�察�I breathed a prayer that she might 

be   Saved   from   the   pangs   that   tortured   me�察  �That   her   young   heart   might

never prove The sting of unrequited love。 My task I then again began�察�But 

ah� �how much an altered man�察�A single hour�察�a few hot tears�察�Had done 

the wasting work of years。 



                                             XII。 



     Nor was it I alone�察�to whom Those words had been as words of doom�察�

By  some   malicious   fiend   rehearsed�此�Another   one   was   standing   by�察  �With 

princely   port�察  �and   piercing   eye�察  �Of   dusky   cheek�察  �and   brow�察  �and   plume�察�

I thought his heaving heart would burst�察�His labouring bosom's heave and 

swell�察�So strongly�察�quickly�察�rose and fell� �A long�察�bright blade hung at his 

side�察�Its keen and glittering edge he tried�察�He bore a bow�察�and this he drew�察�

To see if still its spring were true�察�But other sign could none be caught�察�Of 

what he suffered�察�felt�察�or thought。 And then with firm and haughty stride�察�

He   turned   away�察  �and   left   my   side�察  �I   watched   him�察  �as   with   rapid   tread�察�

Along the  river's   marge   he   sped�察�Till   the  still  twilight's gathering   gloom 

Hid haughty form�察�and waving plume。

                                               I。 



     He    stood   where     the  mountain      moss    outspread       Its   smoothness 

beneath   his   dusky   foot�察  �The   chestnut   boughs   above   his   head�察      �Hung 

motionless      and   mute。   There    came    not  a  voice   from   the   wooded     hill�察�

Nor a sound from the shadowy glen�察�Save the plaintive song of the whip´ 

poor´will�撮�2��       And   the    waterfall's   dash�察  �and   now    and   then�察      �The 

night´bird's mournful cry。 Deep silence hung round him�察�the misty light Of 

the   young   moon   silvered   the   brow   of   Night�察     �Whose   quiet   spirit   had 

flung her spell O'er the valley's depth�察�and the mountain's height�察                  �And 

breathed on the air�察�till its gentle swell Arose on the ear like some loved 

one's call�察�And the wide blue sky spread over all                     Its starry canopy。 

And he seemed as the spirit of some chief�察              �Whose grave could not give 

him   rest�察  �So   deep   was   the   settled   hue   of   grief�察�On
