And he seemed as the spirit of some chief�察              �Whose grave could not give 

him   rest�察  �So   deep   was   the   settled   hue   of   grief�察�On   his   manly   front 

impressed�此�Yet his lips were compressed with a proud disdain�察                   �And his 

port   was   erect   and   high�察  �Like   the   lips   of   a   martyr   who   mocks   at   pain�察�

As the port of a hero who scorns to fly�察               �When his men have failed in 

fight�察     �Who   rather   a   thousand   deaths   would   die�察         �Than   his   fame 

should suffer blight。

     And who by kith�察�and who by name�察                 �Is he�察�that lone�察�yet haughty 

one�拭�By his high brow�察�and eye of flame�察               �I guess him old Ottalli's son。 

Ottalli� �whose proud name was here In other times�察�a sound of fear� �The 

fleet of foot�察�and strong of hand�察�Chief of his tribe�察�lord of the land�察�The 

forest child�察�of mind and soul Too wild and free to brook control� �In chase 

was none so swift as he�察         �In battle none so brave and strong�察�To friends�察�

all love and constancy�察        �But we to those who wrought him wrong� �His 

arm would wage avenging strife�察�With bow�察�and spear�察�and bloody knife�察�

Till he had taught his foes to feel�察�How true his aim�察�how keen his steel。 

Now others   hold the sway  he   held�察          �His day and   power have   passed 

away�察�His goodly forests all are felled�察            �And songs of mirth rise�察�clear 

and gay�察�Chaunted by youthful voices�察�where His battle´hymn once filled 

the air Where blazed the lurid council fire�察�The village church erects its 

spire�察�And where the mystic war´dance rang�察�With its confused�察�discordant 

clang�察�While stern�察�fierce lips�察�with many a cry For blood and vengeance�察�

filled the sky�察�Mild Mercy�察�gentle as the dove�察�Proclaims her rule of peace 

and love。 And of his true and faithful clan�察�Of child and matron�察�maid and 

man�察  �Of   all   he   loved�察  �survives   but   one   His   earliest�察  �and   his   only   son� �

That son's sole heritage his fame�察�His strength�察�his likeness�察�and his name。

     And thus   from varying   year to   year�察�The   youthful chief   has lingered 

here�察�Chief��why is he so nobly named�拭�How many warriors at his call�察�

By Arcouski's breath inflamed�察           �Would with him fight�察�and for him fall�拭�

Of all his father's warrior throng�察        �Remains not one whose lip could now 

Rehearse with him the battle song�察            �Whose hand could bend the hostile 

bow。 And yet�察�no weak�察�complaining word�察�From his stern lip is ever heard�察�

And his bright eye�察�so black and clear�察�Is never moistened by a tear�察�Of 

quiet   mien�察  �and   mournful   mood�察  �He   lives�察  �a   stoic   of   the   wood�察  �Gliding 

about from place to place�察�With noiseless step�察�and steady pace�察�Haunting 

each fountain�察�glen�察�and grot�察�Like the lone Genius of the spot。

     And this was he who�察�standing there�察�Seemed as an image of Despair�察�

Which   agony's   convulsive   strife�察 �Had   quickened into   breathing   life。 The 

writhing lip�察�the brow all wet With Pain's cold�察�clammy�察�deathlike sweat�察�

The   hand�察  �that   with   unconscious   clasp�察  �Strained   his   keen   dagger   in   its

grasp�察�The eye�察�that lightened with the blaze Of frenzied Passion's maniac 

gaze�察  �The   nervous�察  �shuddering   thrill�察  �which   came At   intervals   along   his 

frame�察  �The   tremulously   heaving   breast�察  �These   signs   the   inward   storm 

confessed�此�Yet�察�through those signs of wo�察�there broke Flashes of fearless 

thought�察  �which   spoke A  soul   within�察  �whose   haughty   will   Would   wrestle 

with   immortal   ill�察  �And   only   quit   the   strife�察  �when   fate   Its   being   should 

annihilate。 Silent he stood�察�until the breeze Bore from his lips some words 

like these。

     ;The   words       I  speak   are   no   complaint       And      if   I  breathe  out   my 

despair�察 �It   is   not   that   my   heart   grows   faint�察  �Or   shrinks   from  what   'tis 

doomed to bear。 Though every sorrow which may shake                           Or rend man's

Misery�察�from my youth till now Have felt�察�by turns�察�each pang�察�each care�察�

Her   hapless   sons   are   doomed�察  �to   bear�察  �I   caught   my   mother's   parting 

breath�察      �When passed she to the spirit land�察�And from the fatal field of 

death�察      �Where�察  �leading   on   his   fearless   band�察  �With   fiery   and   resistless 

might�察�He fell�察�though victor in the fight�察�Pierced by the arrow of some foe�察�

I   saw   my   father's    spirit   go。  And    I  have    seen   his   warrior    men�察   �From 

mountain�察�valley�察�hill�察�and glen�察�Departing one by one�察�since then�察�As from 

the dry and withered spray�察�The wilted leaves are blown away�察�Upon some 

windy autumn day�此�I�察�only I�察�am left to be The last leaf of the blighted tree�察�

Which   the   first   wind   that   through   the   sky   Goes   carelessly   careering   by�察�

     ;How shall I to myself alone�察�The weakness of my bosom own�拭�Why�察�

mindful of my fame and pride�察�When my brave brethren had died�察�Why�察�

with my friendly�察�ready knife�察�Drew I not forth my useless life�拭�Was it a 

coward fear of death�察�That bade me treasure up my breath�拭�Or had life yet 

some genial ray�察�That wooed me in its warmth to stay�拭�Had earth yet one 

whose   smile   could   stir�察  �My   spirit   with   deep   love   for   her�拭  �Yes�察  �though 

within me hope was dead�察�And wild Ambition's dreams were fled�察�Though 

o'er my blighted heart�察�Despair Desponded�察�love still nestled there�察�Love� �

how   the   pale´faced   scorner's   lip      Would   sneer�察  �to   hear   me   name   that 

name�察�Yet was it deep within my soul                 A secret but consuming flame�察�

Whose overruling mastership�察�Defied slow Reason's dull control� �And felt 

for   one   of   that   vile   race�察  �To   whom   my   tribe   had   given   place�察  �Was 

nursed in silence and in shame� �Shame�察�for the weakness of a heart�察                    �Yet 

bleeding   from   th'   oppressor's   blow�察  �Which   could   bestow   its   better   part 

Upon   the   offspring   of   a   foe�   �They�察  �the   mean   delvers   of   the   soil�察  �The 

wielders of the felling axe�察�Because we will not stoop to toil�察                  �Nor to 

its burdens bond our backs�察�Because we scorn Seduction's wiles�察�Her lying 

words and forged smiles�察�They�察�the foul slaves of lust and gold�察�Say that 

our blood and hearts are cold。��3�� But ere the morrow's dawning light Has 

climbed   yon   eastern   craggy   height�察  �One�察  �whose   fierce   eye   and   haughty 

brow�察�Are lit with pride and pleasure now�察�Shall learn�察�at point of my true 

steel�察�How much the Red man's heart may feel�察�How fearlessly he strikes 

the foe�察�When love and vengeance prompt the blow� �Though scorned by 

him�察�I know an art Could stop the beatings of his heart�察�Ere his own lips

victim's breath�察�With gasp�察�and intervening pause�察�The lifeblood from its 

source he draws�察�Marks�察�in the crimson stream that flows�察�How near life 

verges to   its   close�察�And   its last soul´exhaling  groan�察�To him  is   music's 

sweetest tone� �And he�察�whose fate it is to die�察�Ere Morning's banner flouts 

the sky�察�The eye shall see�察�the arm shall know�察�That guides and deals th' 

avenging blow�察�And ere his spirit goes to rest�察              �Right well his scornful 

heart shall learn�察�How fiercely�察�in a savage breast�察              �The flames of love 

and hate may burn。; He spake�察�and down the mountain's side�察�With quick�察�

impatient   step�察  �he   hied�察  �Threading   the   forest's   lonely   gloom�察�A  ruthless 

minister of doom。
