VERSE此 A LEGEND OF
PROVENCE
The lights extinguished察 by the hearth I leant察 Half weary with a
listless discontent。 The flickering giant´shadows察 gathering near察 Closed
round me with a dim and silent fear。 All dull察 all dark察 save when the
leaping flame察Glancing察lit up a Picture's ancient frame。 Above the hearth
it hung。 Perhaps the night察 My foolish tremors察 or the gleaming light察
Lent power to that Portrait dark and quaint ´ A Portrait such as Rembrandt
loved to paint ´ The likeness of a Nun。 I seemed to trace A world of
sorrow in the patient face察In the thin hands folded across her breast ´ Its
own and the room's shadow hid the rest。 I gazed and dreamed察and the dull
embers stirred察Till an old legend that I once had heard Came back to me察
linked to the mystic gloom Of that dark Picture in the ghostly room。 In the
far south察 where clustering vines are hung察Where first the old chivalric
lays were sung察Where earliest smiled that gracious child of France察Angel
and knight and fairy察called Romance察I stood one day。 The warm blue
June was spread Upon the earth察blue summer overhead察Without a cloud
to fleck its radiant glare察Without a breath to stir its sultry air。 All still察all
silent察save the sobbing rush Of rippling waves察that lapsed in silver hush
Upon the beach察 where察 glittering towards the strand察 The purple
Mediterranean kissed the land。
All still察 all peaceful察 when a convent chime Broke on the mid´day
silence for a time察Then trembling into quiet察seemed to cease察In deeper
silence and more utter peace。 So as I turned to gaze察where gleaming white察
Half hid by shadowy trees from passers' sight察The Convent lay察one who
had dwelt for long In that fair home of ancient tale and song察Who knew
the story of each cave and hill察And every haunting fancy lingering still
Within the land察 spake thus to me察 and told The Convent's treasured
Legend察quaint and old此
Long years ago察 a dense and flowering wood察 Still more concealed
where the white convent stood察Borne on its perfumed wings the title came此

;Our Lady of the Hawthorns; is its name。 Then did that bell察which still
rings out to´day察 Bid all the country rise察 or eat察 or pray。 Before that
convent shrine察 the haughty knight Passed the lone vigil of his perilous
fight察 For humbler cottage strife or village brawl察 The Abbess listened察
prayed察and settled all。 Young hearts that came察weighed down by love or
wrong察Left her kind presence comforted and strong。 Each passing pilgrim察
and each beggar's right Was food察and rest察and shelter for the night。 But察
more than this察the Nuns could well impart The deepest mysteries of the
healing art察Their store of herbs and simples was renowned察And held in
wondering faith for miles around。 Thus strife察love察sorrow察good and evil
fate察Found help and blessing at the convent gate。
Of all the nuns察no heart was half so light察No eyelids veiling glances
half as bright察No step that glided with such noiseless feet察No face that
looked so tender or so sweet察No voice that rose in choir so pure察so clear察
No heart to all the others half so dear察So surely touched by others' pain or
woe察 。Guessing the grief her young life could not know撮 No soul in
childlike faith so undefiled察As Sister Angela's察the ;Convent Child。; For
thus they loved to call her。 She had known No home察no love察no kindred察
save their own。 An orphan察to their tender nursing given察Child察plaything察
pupil察now the Bride of Heaven。 And she it was who trimmed the lamp's
red light That swung before the altar察 day and night察 Her hands it was
whose patient skill could trace The finest broidery察weave the costliest lace察
But most of all察her first and dearest care察The office she would never miss
or share察Was every day to weave fresh garlands sweet察To place before the
shrine at Mary's feet。 Nature is bounteous in that region fair察 For even
winter has her blossoms there。 Thus Angela loved to count each feast the
best察 By telling with what flowers the shrine was dressed。 In pomp
supreme the countless Roses passed察Battalion on battalion thronging fast察
Each with a different banner察 flaming bright察 Damask察 or striped察 or
crimson察pink察or white察Until they bowed before a newborn queen察And
the pure virgin Lily rose serene。 Though Angela always thought the
Mother blest Must love the time of her own hawthorn best察Each evening
through the year察with equal察care察She placed her flowers察then kneeling
down in prayer察As their faint perfume rose before the shrine察So rose her

thoughts察 as pure and as divine。 She knelt until the shades grew dim
without察 Till one by one the altar lights shone out察 Till one by one the
Nuns察like shadows dim察Gathered around to chant their vesper hymn察Her
voice then led the music's winged flight察And ;Ave察Maris Stella; filled the
night。 But wherefore linger on those days of peace拭 When storms draw
near察then quiet hours must cease。 War察cruel war察 defaced the land察 and
came So near the convent with its breath of flame察That察seeking shelter察
frightened peasants fled察Sobbing out tales of coming fear and dread察Till
after a fierce skirmish察down the road察One night came straggling soldiers察
with their load Of wounded察dying comrades察and the band察Half pleading
yet as if they could command察 Summoned the trembling Sisters察 craved
their care察 Then rode away察 and left the wounded there。 But soon
compassion bade all fear depart。 And bidding every Sister do her part察
Some prepare simples察 healing salves察 or bands察 The Abbess chose the
more experienced hands察To dress the wounds needing most skilful care察
Yet even the youngest Novice took her share。 To Angela察 who had but
ready will And tender pity察yet no special skill察Was given the charge of a
young foreign knight察 Whose wounds were painful察 but whose danger
slight。 Day after day she watched beside his bed察 And first in hushed
repose the hours fled此His feverish moans alone the silence stirred察Or her
soft voice察uttering some pious word。 At last the fever left him察day by day
The hours察no longer silent察passed away。 What could she speak of拭 First察
to still his plaints察She told him legends of the martyred Saints察Described
the pangs察which察through God's plenteous grace察Had gained their souls
so high and bright a place。 This pious artifice soon found success ´ Or so
she fanciedfor he murmured less。 So she described the glorious pomp
sublime察 In which the chapel shone at Easter time察 The Banners察
Vestments察gold察and colours bright察Counted how many tapers gave their
light察Then察in minute detail went on to say察How the High Altar looked on
Christmas´day此The kings and shepherds察all in green and red察And a bright
star of jewels overhead。 Then told the sign by which they all had seen察
How even nature loved to greet her Queen察 For察 when Our Lady's last
procession went Down the long garden察every head was bent察And察rosary
in hand察each Sister prayed察As the long floating banners were displayed察

They struck the hawthorn boughs察and showers and showers Of buds and
blossoms strewed her way with flowers。 The Knight unwearied listened察
till at last察He too described the glories of his past察Tourney察and joust察and
pageant bright and fair察And all the lovely ladies who were there。 But half
incredulous she heard。 Could this ´ This be the world拭this place of love
and bliss Where then was hid the strange and hideous charm察That never
failed to bring the gazer harm拭She crossed herself察yet asked察and listened
still察And still the knight described with all his skill The glorious world of
joy察all joys above察Transfigured in the golden mist of love。 Spread察spread
your wings察ye angel guardians bright察And shield these dazzling phantoms
from her sight But no察days passed察matins and vespers rang察And still the
quiet Nuns toiled察prayed察and sang察And never guessed the fatal察coiling
net Which every day drew near察and nearer yet察Around their darling察for
she went and came About her duties察outwardly the same。 The same拭ah察
no even when she knelt to pray察Some charmed dream kept all her heart
away。 So days went on察until the convent gate Opened one night。 Who
durst go forth so late拭Across the moo
