durst go forth so late�拭�Across the moonlit grass�察�with stealthy tread�察�Two 

silent�察  �shrouded   figures   passed     and   fled。   And   all  was   silent�察  �save  the 

moaning seas�察�That sobbed and pleaded�察�and a wailing breeze That sighed 

among the perfumed hawthorn trees。 

     What need to tell that dream so bright and brief�察�Of joy unchequered 

by   a   dread   of   grief�拭  �What   need   to   tell   how   all   such   dreams   must   fade�察�

Before   the   slow�察  �foreboding�察  �dreaded       shade�察  �That   floated   nearer�察  �until 

pomp and pride�察�Pleasure and wealth�察�were summoned to her side。 To bid�察�

at least�察�the noisy hours forget�察�And clamour down the whispers of regret。 

Still Angela strove to dream�察�and strove in vain�察�Awakened once�察�she could 

not sleep again。 She saw�察�each day and hour�察�more worthless grown The 

heart   for   which   she   cast   away   her   own�察  �And   her   soul   learnt�察  �through 

bitterest inward strife�察�The slight�察�frail love for which she wrecked her life�察�

The phantom for which all her hope was given�察�The cold bleak earth for 

which she bartered heaven� �But all in vain�察�would even the tenderest heart 

Now stoop to take so poor an outcast's part�拭�

     Years fled�察�and she grew reckless more and more�察�Until the humblest 

peasant closed his door�察�And where she passed�察�fair dames�察�in scorn and

pride�察�Shuddered�察�and drew their rustling robes aside。 At last a  yearning 

seemed   to   fill   her   soul�察�A  longing   that   was   stronger   than   control�此  �Once 

more�察�just once again�察�to see the place That knew her young and innocent�察�

to retrace The long and weary southern path�察�to gaze Upon the haven of 

her childish days�察�Once more beneath the convent roof to lie�察�Once more 

to   look   upon   her   homeand   die�   �Weary   and   wornher   comrades�察  �chill 

remorse And black despair�察�yet a strange silent force Within her heart�察�that 

drew her more and more ´ Onward she crawled�察�and begged from door to 

door。 Weighed down with weary days�察�her failing strength Grew less each 

hour�察�till one day's dawn at length�察�As first its rays flooded the world with 

light�察  �Showed   the   broad   waters�察  �glittering   blue   and   bright�察  �And   where�察�

amid   the   leafy   hawthorn   wood�察  �Just   as   of   old   the   quiet   cloister   stood。 

Would any know her�拭          �Nay�察�no fear。      Her face Had lost all trace of youth�察�

of joy�察�of grace�察�Of the pure happy soul they used to know ´ The novice 

Angelaso long ago。 She rang the convent bell。                 The well´known sound 

Smote on her heart�察�and bowed her to the ground�察�And she�察�who had not 

wept   for   long   dry   years�察  �Felt   the   strange   rush   of   unaccustomed   tears�察�

Terror and anguish seemed to check her breath�察�And stop her heart。                       Oh 

God�   �could   this   be   death�拭  �Crouching   against  the  iron   gate�察�she  laid   Her 

weary head against the bars�察�and prayed�此�But nearer footsteps drew�察�then 

seemed to wait�此�And then she heard the opening of the grate�察�And saw the 

withered face�察�on which awoke Pity and sorrow�察�as the portress spoke�察�And 

asked the stranger's bidding�此          �Take me in�察─�She faltered�察 �Sister Monica�察�

from sin�察�And sorrow�察�and despair�察�that will not cease�察�Oh�察�take me in�察�and 

let me die in peace� ─�With soothing words the Sister bade her wait�察�Until 

she brought the key to unbar the gate。 The beggar tried to thank her as she 

lay�察�And   heard   the   echoing   footsteps die  away。   But   what   soft   voice   was 

that which sounded near�察�And stirred strange trouble in her heart to hear�拭�

She raised her head�察�she sawshe seemed to know ´ A face that came from 

long�察�long years ago�此�Herself�察�yet not as when she fled away�察�The young 

and blooming novice�察�fair and gay�察�But a grave woman�察�gentle and serene�此�

The   outcast   knew   itWHAT   SHE   MIGHT   HAVE   BEEN。   But�察  �as   she 

gazed   and   gazed�察  �a   radiance   bright   Filled   all   the   place   with   strange   and 

sudden light�察�The  Nun was   there no longer�察 �but   instead�察�A  figure  with   a

circle   round   its   head�察�A  ring   of   glory�察  �and   a   face�察  �so   meek�察  �So   soft�察  �so 

tender   。  。  。 Angela   strove   to   speak�察�And   stretched   her hands out�察 �crying�察�

;Mary   mild�察  �Mother   of   mercy�察  �help   me��help   your   child� ─  �And   Mary 

answered�察 �From thy bitter past�察�Welcome�察�my child� �oh�察�welcome home at 

last�   �I   filled   thy   place。 Thy   flight   is   known   to   none�察  �For   all   thy   daily 

duties I have done�察�Gathered thy flowers�察�and prayed�察�and sung�察�and slept�察�

Didst thou not know�察�poor child�察�THY PLACE WAS KEPT�拭�Kind hearts 

are here�察�yet would the tenderest one Have limits to its mercy�此                   �God has 

none。 And man's forgiveness may be true and sweet�察�But yet he stoops to 

give   it。  More   complete   Is   Love   that   lays   forgiveness   at   thy   feet�察  �And 

pleads     with   thee   to  raise   it。  Only     Heaven     Means     CROWNED�察         �not 

VANQUISHED�察�when it says 'Forgiven��'; Back hurried Sister Monica�察�but 

where Was the poor beggar she left lying there�拭�Gone�察�and she searched in 

vain�察�and sought the place For that wan woman with the piteous face�此�But 

only Angela at the gateway stood�察�Laden with hawthorn blossoms from the 

wood。 And never did a day pass by again�察�But the old portress�察�with a sigh 

of   pain�察  �Would   sorrow   for   her   loitering�此   �with   a   prayer   That   the   poor 

beggar�察�in her wild despair�察�Might not have come to any ill�察�and when She 

ended�察 �God forgive her� ─�humbly then Did Angela bow her head�察�and say 

;Amen� ─      �How     pitiful   her  heart   was�    �all  could    trace   Something      that 

dimmed   the   brightness   of   her   face After   that   day�察  �which   none   had   seen 

before�察�Not troublebut a shadownothing more。 

     Years passed away。          Then�察�one dark day of dread Saw all the sisters 

kneeling   round   a   bed�察 �Where Angela   lay   dying�察  �every  breath   Struggling 

beneath the   heavy  hand of death。  But suddenly  a   flush lit up her   cheek�察�

She raised her wan right hand�察�and strove to speak。 In sorrowing love they 

listened�察�not a sound Or sigh disturbed the utter silence round。 The very 

tapers' flames were scarcely stirred�察�In such hushed awe the sisters knelt 

and heard。 And through that silence Angela told her life�此�Her sin�察�her flight�察�

the sorrow   and   the   strife�察�And   the   return�察  �and   then   clear�察  �low   and   calm�察�

;Praise God for me�察�my sisters�察─�and the psalm Rang up to heaven�察�far and 

clear and wide�察�Again and yet again�察�then sank and died�察�While her white 

face had such a smile of peace�察�They saw she never heard the music cease�察�

And   weeping   sisters   laid   her   in   her   tomb�察  �Crowned   with   a   wreath   of

perfumed hawthorn bloom。 

     And   thus   the   Legend   ended。     It   may  be   Something   is   hidden   in   the 

mystery�察    �Besides     the  lesson    of  God's    pardon     shown�察   �Never     enough 

believed�察  �or   asked�察  �or   known。   Have   we   not   all�察  �amid   life's   petty   strife�察�

Some pure ideal of a noble life That once seemed possible�拭                   �Did we not 

hear The flutter of its wings�察�and feel it near�察�And just within our reach�拭�

It was。    And yet We lost it in this daily jar and fret�察�And now live idle in a 

vague regret。 But still OUR PLACE IS KEPT�察�and it will wait�察�Ready for 

us to fill it�察�soon or late�此�No star is ever lost we once have seen�察�We always 

may be what we might have been。 Since Good�察�though only thought�察�has 

life and breath�察�God's lifecan always be redeemed from death�察�And evil�察�

in its nature�察�is decay�察�And any hour can blot it all away�察�The hopes that 

lost in some far distance seem�察�May be the truer life�察�and this the dream。

    He was the first always�此    �Fortune Shone bright in his face。 I fought 

for years�察�with no effort He conquered the place�此�We ran�察�my feet were all 

bleeding�察�But he won the race。 

    Spite of his many successes Men loved him the same�察�My one pale ray 

of good fortune Met scoffing and blame。 When we erred�察�they gave him 

pity�察�But meonly shame。 

    My home was still in the shadow�察�His lay in the sun�此�I longed in vain�此�

what he asked for It straightway was done。 Once I staked all my heart's 

treasure�察�We playedand he won。 

    Yes�察�and just now I have seen him�察�Cold�察�smiling�察�and blest�察�Laid in his 

coffin。   God help me� �While he is at rest�察�I am cursed still to live�此� even 

Death loved him the best。

     Like   dreary   prison   walls   The   stern   grey   mountains   rise�察  �Until   their 

topmost   crags   Touch   the   far   gloomy   skies�此  �One   steep   and   narrow   path 

Winds   up   the   mountain's   crest�察  �And   from   our   valley   leads   Out   to   the 

golden West。 

     I dwell here in content�察�Thankful for tranquil days�察�And yet�察�my eyes 

grow dim�察�As still I gaze and gaze Upon that mountain pass�察�That leadsor 

so it seems ´ To some far happy land�察�Known in a world of dreams。
