sore dismay'd察
She tells them 'tis a causeless fantasy察And childish error察that they are
afraid察Bids them leave quaking察bids them fear no more此And with that
word she spied the hunted boar察
Whose frothy mouth bepainted all with red察
Like milk and blood being mingled both together察 A second fear
through all her sinews spread察 Which madly hurries her she knows not
whither此
This way she runs察and now she will no further察But back retires to
rate the boar for murther。
A thousand spleens bear her a thousand ways察She treads the path that
she untreads again察
Her more than haste is mated with delays察Like the proceedings of a
drunken brain察Full of respects察yet nought at all respecting察In hand with
all things察nought at all effecting。
Here kennel'd in a brake she finds a hound察l
And asks the weary caitiff for his master察And there another licking of
his wound察Gainst venom'd sores the only sovereign plaster察
And here she meets another sadly scowling察 To whom she speaks察
and he replies with howling。
When he hath ceas'd his ill´resounding noise察 Another flap´mouth'd
mourner察black and grim察
Against the welkin volleys out his voice察Another and another answer
him察 Clapping their proud tails to the ground below察 Shaking their
scratch'd ears察bleeding as they go。
Look察how the world's poor people are amaz'd
At apparitions察signs察and prodigies察Whereon with fearful eyes they
long have gaz'd察Infusing them with dreadful prophecies察
So she at these sad sighs draws up her breath察And察sighing it again察
exclaims on Death。
'Hard´favour'd tyrant察ugly察meagre察lean察

Hateful divorce of love'thus chides she Death察 'Grim´grinning
ghost察earth's worm察what dost thou mean To stifle beauty and to steal his
breath察Who when he liv'd察his breath and beauty set Gloss on the rose察
smell to the violet拭
'If he be dead察 O no it cannot be察 Seeing his beauty察 thou shouldst
strike at it察O yes it may察thou hast no eyes to see察But hatefully at random
dost thou hit。
Thy mark is feeble age察 but thy false dart Mistakes that aim and
cleaves an infant's heart。
'Hadst thou but bid beware察then he had spoke察And察hearing him察thy
power had lost his power。
The Destinies will curse thee for this stroke察 They bid thee crop a
weed察thou pluck'st a flower。 Love's golden arrow at him shoull have fled察
And not Death's ebon dart察to strike him dead。
'Dost thou drink tears察that thou provok'st such weeping拭What may a
heavy groan advantage thee拭 Why hast thou cast into eternal sleeping
Those eyes that taught all other eyes to see拭
Now Nature cares not for thy mortal vigour Since her best work is
ruin'd with thy rigour。'
Here overcome察as one full of despair察She vail'd her eyelids察who察like
sluices察stopp'd
The crystal tide that from her two cheeks fair In the sweet channel of
her bosom dropp'd But through the flood´gates breaks the silver rain察And
with his strong course opens them again。
O how her eyes and tears did lend and borrow察Her eyes seen in the
tears察 tears in her eye察 Both crystals察 where they view'd each other's
sorrow察Sorrow that friendly sighs sought still to dry察
But like a stormy day察 now wind察 now rain察 Sighs dry her cheeks察
tears make them wet again。
Variable passions throng her constant woe察As striving who should best
become her grief察
All entertain'd察 each passion labours so察 That every present sorrow
seemeth chief察 But none is best察 then join they all together察 Like many
clouds consulting for foul weather。
26
´ Page 27´
By this察far off she hears some huntsman holloa察A nurse's song no'er
pleas'd her babe so well此The dire imagination she did follow This sound
of hope doth labour to expel察
For now reviving joy bids her rejoice察And flatters her it is Adonis'
voice。
Whereat her tears began to turn their tide察Being prison'd in her eye察
like pearls in glass察
Yet sometimes falls an orient drop beside察Which her cheek melts察as
scorning it should pass To wash the foul face of the sluttish ground察Who
is but drunken when she seemeth drown'd。
O hard´believing love how strange it seems
Not to believe察and yet too credulous察Thy weal and woe are both of
them extremes察Despair and hope make thee ridiculous此
The one doth flatter thee in thoughts unlikely察In likely thoughts the
other kills thee quickly。
Now she unweaves the web that she hath wrought察Adonis lives察and
Death is not to blame察
It was not she that call'd him all to naught察Now she adds honours to
his hateful name察 She clepes him king of graves察 and grave for kings察
Imperious supreme of all mortal things。
'No察no' quoth she察'sweet Death察I did but jest察Yet pardon me察I felt a
kind of fear Whenas I met the boar察that bloody beast察Which knows no
pity察but is still severe察
Then察gentle shadowtruth I must confess I rail'd on thee察fearing
my love's decease。
'Tis not my fault此 the boar provok'd my tongue察 Be wreak'd on him察
invisible commander察
'Tis he察foul creature察that hath done thee wrong察I did but act察he 's
author of my slander此 Grief hath two tongues此 and never woman yet察
Could rule them both without ten women's wit。'
Thus hoping that Adonis is alive察
Her rash suspect sile doth extenuate察And that his beauty may the
better thrive察With Death she humbly doth insinuate察
Tells him of trophies察 statues察 tombs察 and stories His victories察 his

triumphs察and his glories。
'O Jove' quoth she察'how much a fool was I察To be of such a weak and
silly mind
To wail his death who lives and must not die Till mutual overthrow of
mortal kind察For he being dead察with him is beauty slain察And察beauty dead察
black chaos comes again。
'Fie察fie察fond love thou art so full of fear As one with treasure laden察
hemm'd with thieves Trifles察 unwitnessed with eye or ear察 Thy coward
heart with false bethinking grieves。'
Even at this word she hears a merry horn Whereat she leaps that was
but late forlorn。
As falcon to the lure察away she flies察The grass stoops not察she treads
on it so light察
And in her haste unfortunately spies The foul boar's conquest on her
fair delight察Which seen察her eyes察as murder'd with the view察Like stars
asham'd of day察themselves withdrew此
Or察as the snail察whose tender horns being hit察
Shrinks backwards in his shelly cave with pain察 And there察 all
smother'd up察in shade doth sit察Long after fearing to creep forth again察
So察at his bloody view察her eyes are fled Into the deep dark cabills of
her head察
Where they resign their office and their light To the disposing of her
troubled brain察
Who bids them still consort with ugly night察And never wound the
heart with looks again察Who察like a king perplexed in his throne察By their
suggestion gives a deadly groan察
Whereat each tributary subject quakes察As when the wind察imprison'd
in the ground察 Struggling for passage察 earth's foundation shakes察 Which
with cold terror doth men's minds confound。 This mutiny each part doth so
surprise l
That from their dark beds once more leap her eyes察
And察 being open'd察 threw unwilling light Upon the wide wound that
the boar had trench'd In his soft flank察whose wonted lily white
With purple tears察that his wound wept察was drench'd此No flower was

nigh察no grass察herb察leaf察or weed But stole his blood and seem'd with him
to bleed。
This solemn sympathy poor Venus noteth察
Over one shoulder doth she hang her head察 Dumbly she passions察
franticly she doteth察She thinks he could not die察he is not dead此
Her voice is stopp'd察her joints forget to bow察Her eyes are mad that
they have wept till now。
Upon his hurt she looks so steadfastly察That her sight dazzling makes
the wound seem three察And then she reprehends her mangling eye察
That makes more gashes where no breach should be此His face seems
twain察 each several limb is doubled察 For oft the eye mistakes察 the brain
being troubled。
'My tongue cannot express my grief for one察
And yet' quoth she察 'behold two Adons dead My sighs are blown
away察my salt tears gone察Mine eyes are turn'd to fire察my heart to lead此
Heavy heart's lead察melt at mine eyes' red fire So shall I die by drops
of hot desire。
'Alas poor world察 what treasure hast thou lost What face remains
alive that's worth the viewing拭Whose tongue is music now拭what canst
thou boast Of things long since察or anything ensuing拭
The flowers are sweet察 their colours fresh and trim察 But true´sweet
beauty liv'd and died with him。
'Bonnet nor veil henceforth no creature wear
Nor sun nor wind will ev
