As soon as they have ceased from the charge at full gallop察the pace

knightly pageantry9Аwill have been displayed to the delight of god and
man。 That our knights are not accustomed to these actual evolutions察I am
well aware察but I also recognise the fact that the performances are good

moreover察 that novel feats of horsemanship have before now been
performed by our knights察when their commanders have had the ability to

But now察let us suppose it is the occasion of the march´past撮10Аin the
grounds of the Lyceum察before the javelin´throwing。 The scene would gain
in beauty if the tribal squadrons were to ride in line of columns11Аas if

skill with which your troopers can gallop down a steep incline13Аwith as
broad a front as the nature of the ground permits。 I am quite clear that your
troopers察if they can trust their own skill in galloping察will take kindly to
such an exhibition察while as certainly察if unpractised察they must look to it

To come to the test manouvres。14АThe order in which the men will
ride with showiest effect on these occasions has been already noted。15А
As far as the leader is himself concerned察and presuming he is mounted on
a powerful horse察I would suggest that he should each time ride round on
the outer flank察in which case he will himself be kept perpetually moving
at a canter察and those with him察as they become the wheeling flank察will察
by turns察fall into the same pace察with this result此the spectacle presented to
the senate will be that of an ever rapidly moving stream of cavaliers察and
the horses having察each in turn察the opportunity to recover breath察will not
be overdone。

On occasions when the display takes place in the hippodrome撮16Аthe
best arrangement would be察in the first place察that the troops should fill the
entire space with extended front察so forcing out the mob of people from
the centre撮17Аand secondly察that in the sham fight18Аwhich ensues察the
tribal squadrons察swiftly pursuing and retiring察should gallop right across
and through each other察 the two hipparchs at their head察 each with five
squadrons under him。 Consider the effect of such a spectacle此 the grim
advance of rival squadrons front to front察the charge察the solemn pause as察
having swept across the hippodrome察 they stand once more confronting
one another察 and then the trumpet sounds察 whereat a second and yet
swifter hostile advance察how fine the effectand once again they are at
the halt察and once again the trumpet sounds察and for the third time察at the
swiftest pace of all察 they make a final charge across the field察 before
dismissal察after which they come to a halt en masse察in battle order察and察as
now customary撮19А ride up to salute the senate察 and disband。 These
evolutions will at once approve themselves察 I think察 not only for their
novelty察 but for their resemblacne to real warfare。 The notion that the
hipparch is to ride at a slower pace than his phylarchs察and to handle his
horse precisely in their style察seems to me below the dignity of the office。

When the cavalry parade takes place on the hard´trodden20Аground
of the Academy察I have the following advice to give。 To avoid being jolted
off his horse at any moment察 the trooper should察 in charging察 lean well
back撮21Аand to prevent his charger stumbling察he should while wheeling
hold his head well up察but along a straight stretch he should force the pace。

To pass to a different topic此 on the march察 the general will need to
exercise a constant forethought to relieve the horses' backs and the
troopers' legs察 by a judicious interchange of riding and of marching。
Wherein consists the golden mean察will not be hard to find察since ;every
man a standard to himself察┌1Аapplies察and your sensations are an index to
prevent your fellows being overdone through inadvertence。
1АThe phrase is proverbial。 Cf。 Plat。 ;Theaet。; 183 B。
But now supposing you are on the march in some direction察and it is
uncertain whether you will stumble on the enemy察your duty is to rest your
squadrons in turn察since it will go hard with you察 if the enemy come to
close quarters when the whole force is dismounted。2АOr察again察suppose
