determination of the independent soulthat is the root of progress察and the

more human beings who have that察the more progress there is in the world。

Give me a man who察though he can neither read nor write察yet dares think

for himself察and do the thing he believes此 that man will help forward the

human race more than any thousand men who have read察or written either察

a thousand books apiece察 but have not dared to think for themselves。

And better for his race察 and better察 I believe察 in the sight of God察 the

confusions and mistakes of that one sincere brave man察than the second´

hand and cowardly correctness of all the thousand。

As for the ;triumphs of science察─let us honour察with astonishment and

awe察the genius of those who invented them察but let us remember that the

things themselves are as a gun or a sword察 with which we can kill our

enemy察but with which also our enemy can kill us。 Like all outward and

material things察 they are equally fit for good and for evil。 In England

herethey have been as yet察 as far as I can see察 nothing but blessings此

but I have my very serious doubts whether they are likely to be blessings

to the whole human race察for many an age to come。 I can conceive them´

´may God avert the omen the instruments of a more crushing executive

centralisation察of a more utter oppression of the bodies and souls of men察

than the world has yet seen。 I can conceivemay God avert the omen

centuries hence察 some future world´ruler sitting at the junction of all

railroads察 at the centre of all telegraph´wiresa world´spider in the

omphalos of his world´wide web察and smiting from thence everything that

dared to lift its head察or utter a cry of pain察with a swiftness and surety to

which the craft of a Justinian or a Philip II。 were but clumsy and impotent。

All察all outward things察be sure of it察are good or evil察exactly as far as

they are in the hands of good men or of bad。

Moreover察 paradoxical as it may seem察 railroads and telegraphs察

instead of inaugurating an era of progress察 may possibly only retard it。

;Rester sur un grand succes察─ which was Rossini's advice to a young

singer who had achieved a triumph察 is a maxim which the world often

follows察not only from prudence察but from necessity。 They have done so

much that it seems neither prudent nor possible to do more。 They will

rest and be thankful。

Thus察gunpowder and printing made rapid changes enough察but those

changes had no farther development。 The new art of war察the new art of

literature察remained stationary察or rather receded and degenerated察till the

end of the eighteenth century。

And so it may be with our means of locomotion and intercommunion察

and what depends on them。 The vast and unprecedented amount of

capital察 of social interest察 of actual human intellect investedI may say

locked upin these railroads察 and telegraphs察 and other triumphs of

industry and science察 will not enter into competition against themselves。

They will not set themselves free to seek new discoveries in directions

which are often actually opposed to their own察always foreign to it。 If the

money of thousands are locked up in these great works察 the brains of

hundreds of thousands察and of the very shrewdest too察are equally locked

up therein likewise察 and are to be subtracted from the gross material of

social development察 and added without personal fault of their owners察

who may be very good men to the dead weight of vested selfishness察

ignorance察and dislike of change。

Yes。 A Byzantine and stationary age is possible yet。 Perhaps we are

now entering upon it察an age in which mankind shall be satisfied with the

;triumphs of science察─and shall look merely to the greatest comfort call it

not happiness of the greatest number察and like the debased Jews of old察

;having found the life of their hand察be therewith content察─no matter in

what mud´hole of slavery and superstition。

But one hope there is察 and more than a hopeone certainty察 that

however satisfied enlightened public opinion may become with the results

of science察 and the progress of the human race察 there will be always a

more enlightened private opinion or opinions察which will not be satisfied

therewith at all察a few men of genius察a few children of light察it may be a

few persecuted察and a few martyrs for new truths察who will wish the world

not to rest and be thankful察but to be discontented with itself察ashamed of

itself察striving and toiling upward察without present hope of gain察till it has

reached that unknown goal which Bacon saw afar off察and like all other

heroes察died in faith察not having received the promises察but seeking still a

polity which has foundations察whose builder and maker is God。

These will be the men of science察 whether physical or spiritual。 Not

merely the men who utilise and apply that which is known useful as they

plainly are察 but the men who themselves discover that which was

unknown察and are generally deemed useless察if not hurtful察to their race。

They will keep the sacred lamp burning unobserved in quiet studies察while

all the world is gazing only at the gaslights flaring in the street。 They

will pass that lamp on from hand to hand察modestly察almost stealthily察till

the day comes round again察when the obscure student shall be discovered

once more to be察as he has always been察the strongest man on earth。 For

they follow a mistress whose footsteps may often slip察yet never fall察for

she walks forward on the eternal facts of Nature察which are the acted will

of God。 A giantess she is察young indeed察but humble as yet此cautious and

modest beyond her years。 She is accused of trying to scale Olympus察by

some who fancy that they have already scaled it themselves察and will察of

course察brook no rival in their fancied monopoly of wisdom。

The accusation察 I believe察 is unjust。 And yet science may scale

Olympus after all。 Without intending it察almost without knowing it察she

may find herself hereafter upon a summit of which she never dreamed察

surveying the universe of God in the light of Him who made it and her察

and remakes them both for ever and ever。 On that summit she may stand

hereafter察if only she goes on察as she goes now察in humility and in patience察

doing the duty which lies nearest her察lured along the upward road察not by

ambition察vanity察or greed察but by reverent curiosity for every new pebble察

and flower察and child察and savage察around her feet。
