the window and began to walk up and down the gravel。 Nobody but
myself appeared to notice these remarkable occurrences察 but I watched
them with keen interest。 Half an hour passed察and then there smote on
my watchful ear the sound of a low laugh from the boudoir。 It was
followed almost immediately by a stranger sound from the gravel walk。
Then察all in a moment察two things happened。 The boudoir door opened察
and Trix察 followed by Newhaven察 came in察 smiling察 from the window
entered Jack Ives and Mrs。 Wentworth。 My eyes were on the curate。
He gave one sudden察comprehending glance toward the other couple察then
he took the widow's hand察 led her up to Dora察 and said察 in low yet
penetrating tones。
;Will you wish us joy察Mrs。 Polton拭─
The squire察Rippleby察and Algy Stanton were round them in an instant。
I kept my place察 watching now the face of Trix Queenborough。 She
turned first flaming red察then very pale。 I saw her turn to Newhaven and
speak one or two urgent察imperative words to him。 Then察drawing herself
up to her full height察 she crossed the room to where the group was
assembled round Mrs。 Wentworth and Jack Ives。
;What's the matter拭 What are you saying拭─she asked。
Mrs。 Wentworth's eyes were modestly cast down察but a smile played
round her mouth。 No one spoke for a moment。 Then Jack Ives said此
;Mrs。 Wentworth has promised to be my wife察Miss Queenborough。;

winning察touching察sweetest smile in the world察she said此
;So you took my advice察and our afternoon walk was not wasted察after
all拭─
Mrs。 Polton is not used to these fine flights of diplomacy察 she had
heard before dinner something of what had actually happened in the
afternoon察 and the simple woman positively jumped。 Jack Ives met
Trix's scornful eyes full and square。
;Not at all wasted察─said he察with a smile。 ;Not only has it shown me
where my true happiness lies察but it has also given me a juster idea of the
value and sincerity of your regard for me察Miss Queenborough。;
;It is as real察Mr。 Ives察as it is sincere察─said she。
;It is like yourself察 Miss Queenborough察─ said he察 with a little bow察
and he turned from her and began to talk to his fiancee。
Trix Queenborough moved slowly toward where I sat。 Newhaven
was watching her from where he stood alone on the other side of the room。
;And have you no news for us拭─I asked in low tones。
;Thank you察─she said haughtily察 I don't care that mine should be a
pendent to the great tidings about the little widow and curate。;
After a moment's pause she went on此
;He lost no time察 did he拭He was wise to secure her before what
happened this afternoon could leak out。 Nobody can tell her now。;
;This afternoon拭─
;He asked me to marry him this afternoon。;
;And you refused拭─
;Yes。;
;Well察his behavior is in outrageously bad taste察but;
She laid a hand on my arm察and said in calm察level tones。
;I refused him because I dared not have him察but I told him I cared for
him察and he said he loved me。 And I let him kiss me。 Good´night察Mr。
Wynne。;
I sat still and silent。 Newhaven came across to us。 Trix put up her
hand and caught him by the sleeve。
;Fred察─she said察 my dear察honest old Fred察you love me察don't you拭─

Newhaven察 much embarrassed and surprised察looked at me in alarm。
But her hand was in his now察and her eyes imploring him。
;I should rather think I did察my dear察─said he。
I really hope that Lord and Lady Newhaven will not be very unhappy察
while Mrs。 Ives quite worships her husband察 and is convinced that she
eclipsed the brilliant and wealthy Miss Queenborough。
Perhaps she didperhaps not。
There are察as I have said察great qualities in the curate of Poltons察but I
have not quite made up my mind precisely what they are。 I ought察
however察to say that Dora takes a more favorable view of him and a less
lenient view of Trix than I。
That is perhaps natural。 Besides察 Dora does not know the precise
manner in which the curate was refused。 By the way察he preached next
Sunday on the text察 The children of this world are wiser in their
generation than the children of light。;

CHAPTER VI。
WHICH SHALL IT BE拭
It was a charmingly mild and balmy day。 The sun shone beyond the
orchard察and the shade was cool inside。 A light breeze stirred the boughs
of the old apple tree under which the philosopher sat。
None of these things did the philosopher notice察 unless it might be
when the wind blew about the leaves of the large volume on his knees察and
he had to find his place again。 Then he would exclaim against the wind察
shuffle the leaves till he got the right page察and settle to his reading。 The
book was a treatise on ontology察it was written by another philosopher察a
friend of this philosopher's察it bristled with fallacies察and this philosopher
was discovering them all察and noting them on the fly leaf at the end。 He
was not going to review the book as some might have thought from his
behavior察or even to answer it in a work of his own。 It was just that he
found a pleasure in stripping any poor fallacy naked and crucifying it。
Presently a girl in a white frock came into the orchard。 She picked up
an apple察bit it察and found it ripe。 Holding it in her hand she walked up to
where the philosopher sat察and looked at him。 He did not stir。 She took
a bite out of the apple察munched it察and swallowed it。 The philosopher
crucified a fallacy on the fly leaf。 The girl flung the apple away。
;Mr。 Jerningham察─said she察 are you very busy拭─
The philosopher察pencil in hand察looked up。
;No察Miss May察─said he察 not very。;
;Because I want your opinion。;
;In one moment察─said the philosopher apologetically。
He turned back to the fly leaf and began to nail the last fallacy a little
tighter to the cross。 The girl regarded him察first with amused impatience察
then with a vexed frown察finally with a wistful regret。 He was so very
old for his age察she thought察he could not be much beyond thirty察his hair
was thick and full of waves察his eyes bright and clear察his complexion not
yet divested of all youth's relics。

;Now察Miss May察I am at your service察─said the philosopher察with a
lingering look at his impaled fallacy。 And he closed the book察keeping it察
however察on his knee。
The girl sat down just opposite to him。
;It's a very important thing I want to ask you察─she began察tugging at a
tuft of grass察 and it's verydifficult察and you mustn't tell anyone I asked
you察at least察I'd rather you didn't。;
;I shall not speak of it察indeed察I shall probably not remember it察─said
the philosopher。
;And you mustn't look at me察please察while I'm asking you。;
;I don't think I was looking at you察but if I was I beg your pardon察─
said the philosopher apologetically。
She pulled the tuft of grass right out of the ground and flung it from
her with all her force。
;Suppose a man; she began。 ;No察that's not right。;
;You can take any hypothesis you please察─observed the philosopher察
;but you must verify it afterward察of course。;
;Oh察 do let me go on。 Suppose a girl察 Mr。 JerninghamI wish you
wouldn't nod。;
;It was only to show that I followed you。;
;Oh察of course you `follow me' as you call it。 Suppose a girl had two
loversyou're nodding againor察I ought to say察suppose there were two
men who might be in love with a girl。;
;Only two拭─ asked the philosopher。 ;You see察 any number of men
MIGHT be in love with;
;Oh察we can leave the rest out察─said Miss May察with a sudden dimple察
;they don't matter。;
;Very well察─said the philosopher。 ;If they are irrelevant察we will put
them aside。;
;Suppose察 then察 that one of these men wasoh察 AWFULLY in love
with the girlandand proposed察you know;
;A moment ─said the philosopher察opening a notebook。 ;Let me take
down his proposition。 What was it拭─
