Pyrrha prefers us察Joe he treated the case collectively察which was certainly

wiseВ察what then拭─

     ;Beg pardon察sir拭─

     ;Oh察I mean if the lady prefers us察Joe拭─

     Joe brought his fat fist down on the table with a thump。

     ;It aint as if you meant it察─said he doggedly察 you just unsettles of 'er。

I s'pose I can't help ye talking察and laughing察and walking along of 'er察but

you aint no call to kiss 'er。;

     Another pause ensued。 The chairman held a consultation with Tritton察

who sat on his right hand。

     ;The meeting察─ said Gayford察 will proceed to declare察 one by one察

whether it has everand if so察how oftenkissed the lady。 I will begin。

Never     Mr。 Tritton拭─

     ;Never ─said Tritton。

     ;Mr。 Bird拭─

     ;Never ─said Bird。

     ;Mr。 Robertson拭─

     ;Never ─said I。

     ;Mr。 Smugg拭─

     ;I seed 'im this very morning ─cried Joe察like an accusing angel。

     Smugg took his hand away from his face察 after giving his wet brow

one last dab。 He looked at Gayford and at Joe察but said nothing。

     ;Mr。 Smugg拭─repeated the chairman。

     ;Mr。 Smugg察─interposed Tritton suavely察 probably feels himself in a

difficulty。   The secret is not察perhaps察entirely his own。;

    We all nodded。

     ;We enter a plea of not guilty for Mr。 Smugg察─observed the chairman

gravely。

     ;I seed 'im do it察─said Joe。

    No one spoke。 Joe finished his beer察pulled his forelock察and turned

on his heel。 Suddenly Smugg burst into speech。 He could hardly form

his words察and they jostled one another in the breathless confusion of his

utterance。

     ;IIyou've no right。     I say nothing。     If I choose察I shallno one has

a right to stop me。 If I love herif she doesn't mind I say nothing

nothing at all。    I won't hear a word。      I shall do as I like。;

    Joe had paused to hear him察and now stood looking at him in wonder。

Then he stepped quickly up to the table察 and察leaning across察 asked in a

harsh voice此

     ;You mean honest察do you察by her拭 You'd make her your wife察would

you拭─

     Smugg察looking straight in front of him察answered此

     ;Yes。;

    Joe drew back察touched his forelock again察and said此

     ;Then it's fair fighting察sir察begging your pardon察and no offense。 But

the girl was mine first察sir。;

     Then Gayford interposed。

     ;Mr。 Smugg察─said he察 you tell Joe察here察that you'd marry this lady。

May I ask how you canwhen;

     But for once Smugg was able to silence one of his pupils。 He arose

from his seat察and brought his hand heavily down on Gayford's shoulder。

     ;Hold your tongue ─he cried。           ;I must answer to God察but I needn't

answer to you。;

     Joe looked at him with round eyes察and察with a last salute察slowly went

out。 None of us spoke察and presently Smugg opened his Thucydides。

     For my part察I took very considerable interest in Pyrrha's side of the

question。     I amused myself by constructing a fancy´born love of Pyrrha's

for her social superior察and if he had been one of ourselves察I should have

seen no absurdity。 But Smugg refused altogether to fit into my frame。

There was no glamour about Smugg察and察to tell the truth察I should have

thought that any girl察 be her station what it might察 faced with the

alternative of Smugg and Joe察 would have chosen Joe。 In my opinion察

Pyrrha was merely amusing herself with Smugg察 and I was rather

comforted by this reversal of the ordinary roles。 Still察I could not rest in

conjecture察 and my curiosity led me up to Dill's little farm on the

afternoon of the day of Joe's sudden appearance。 The others let me go

alone。 Directly after dinner Smugg went to his bedroom察and the other

three had gone off to play lawn tennis at the vicar's。 I lit my pipe察and

strolled along till I reached the gate that led to Dill's meadow。 Here I

waited till Pyrrha should appear。

     As I sat and smoked察a voice struck suddenly on my earthe voice of

Mrs。 Dill察raised to shrillness by anger。

     ;Be off with you察─she said察 and mind your ways察or worse 'll happen

to you。    'Ere's your switch。;

     After a moment Pyrrha turned the corner察and came toward me。 She

was wiping her eyes with the corner of her apron察and carried in her hand a

light hazel switch察which she used to guide errant cows。 She was almost

at the gate before she saw me。 She started察and blushed very red。

     ;Lor is it you察Mr。 Robertson拭─she said。

     I nodded察but did not move。

     ;Mother don't like me talking to gentlemen。;

     ;You've been crying察─said I。

     ;No察I haven't察─said Pyrrha察quite violently。

     ;Mother been scolding you拭─

     ;I wish you'd let me by察sir。;

     ;What for拭─

     ;It's all your fault察─burst out Pyrrha。       ;I didn't want you察no察nor him察

either。 What do you come and get me into trouble for拭─

     ;I haven't done anything察Betsy。         Come now ─

     ;You aint as bad as some察─ she conceded察 a dim smile breaking

through the clouds。

     ;You mean Smugg察─I observed。

     ;Who told you拭─she cried。

     ;Joe察─said I。

     ;Seems he's got a lot to say to everybody察─she commented resentfully。

     ;Ah he told your mother察 did he拭 Well察 you know you shouldn't察

     ;Joe    No察that Smugg。;

     ;But Joe told of you。;

     ;Well察and it was his right。;

     If she thought so察 I had no more to say。 Notions differ among

different sets。     But I pressed the point a little。

     ;Joe got you your scolding。;

     Now察 I can't say whether I did or did not emphasize the last word

unduly察but Pyrrha blushed again察and remarked此

     ;You want to know too much察sir察by a deal。;

     So I left that aspect to the subject察and continued此

     ;I suppose it was for letting Mr。 Smugg kiss you拭─

     ;I couldn't help it。;

     I had great doubts of thatshe could have tackled Smugg with one

hand察but I said pleasantly此

     ;No more could he察I'm sure。;

     Pyrrha cast an alarmed glance at the house。

     ;Oh察I'll   be careful察─  I   laughed。    ;Yes察and   I'll let you go。       But   just

tell me察Betsy察what do you think of Mr。 Smugg拭─

     ;I don't think that of him ─said she察snapping her pretty red fingers。

;Joe 'ud make ten of him。          I wish Joe'd talk to him a bit。;

     The end came soon after this察and察in spite of our attitude I speak of us

four察not of Smugg of whole´heartedness察I think it was rather a shock to

us all察 when Joe announced one morning察 on his arrival with the chops察

that he was to be made a happy man at the church next day。 Smugg was

not in the room察and the rest of us congratulated Joe察and made up a purse

for him to give Pyrrha察with our best respects察and he bowed himself out察

mightily pleased察 and asseverating that we were real gentlemen。 Then

we sat and looked at the table。

     ;It robs us of a resource察─ pronounced Gayford察 once again making

himself the mouthpiece of the party。 We all nodded察 and filled fresh

pipes。

     Presently Smugg sidled in。 We had seen little of him the last week察

save when he was construing he had taken refuge in his own room。

When he came in now察 Gayford wagged his head significantly at me察

apparently察 it was my task to bell the cat。 I rose察 and went to the

mantelpiece。 Smugg had sat down at the table察and my back was to him。

I took a match from the box察 struck it察 and applied it to my pipe察 and察

punctuating my words with interspersed puffings察I said carelessly此

     ;By the way察Smugg察Pyrrha's going to be married to Joe Shanks to´

morrow。;

     I don't know how he looked。 I kept my face from him察but察after a

long minute's pause察he answered此

     ;Thank you察Robertson。           It's Aeschylus this morning察isn't it拭─

     We had a noisy evening that night。 I suppose we felt below par察and
