We dined largely察and drank still more largely察then we sang察and at lastit
was near on twelve察a terrible hour for that neighborhoodwe made our
way察 amid much boisterousness and horseplay察 to bed察 where I察 at least察
was asleep in five minutes。
As the church clock struck two察 I awoke。 I heard a sound of
movement in Smugg's room next door。 I lay and listened。 Presently his
door opened察and he creaked gently downstairs。 I sprang out of bed and
looked out of the window。 Smugg察fully dressed察was gliding along the
path toward Dill's farm。 Some impulsecuriosity only察very likelymade
me jump into my trousers察seize a flannel jacket察draw on a pair of boots察
and hastily follow him。 When I got outside he was visible in the
moonlight察mounting the path ahead of me。 He held on his way toward
the farm察 I following。 When he reached the yard he stopped for a
moment察and seemed to peer up at the windows察which were all dark and
unresponsive。 I stood as quiet as I could察 twenty yards from him察 and
moved cautiously on again when he turned to the right and passed through
the gate into the meadows。
I saw no signs of Pyrrha。 Smugg held on his way across the
meadows察down toward the stream察and suddenly the thought leaped to my
brain that the poor fool meant to drown himself。 But I could hardly
believe it。 Surely he must merely be taking a desperate lover's ramble察a
last sad visit to the scenes of his silly察irrational infatuation。 If I went up
to him察I should look a fool察too察so I hung behind察ready to turn upon him
if need appeared。
He walked down to the very edge of the stream察it ran deep and fast
just here察under a high bank and a row of old willows。 Smugg sat down
on the bank察 wet though the grass was察 and clasped his hands over his
knees。 I crouched down a little way behind him察ready and alert。 I am a
good swimmer察and I did not doubt my power to pull him out察even if I

were not in time to prevent him jumping in。 I saw him rise察look over the
brink察 and sit down again。 I almost thought I saw him shiver。 And
presently察 through the stillness of the summer night察 came the strangest察
saddest sound察catching my ear as it drifted across the meadow。 Smugg
was sobbing察 and his sobsnever loudrose and fell with the subdued
stress of intolerable pain。
Suddenly he leaped up察 cried aloud察 and flung his hands above his
head。 I thought he was gone this time察 but he stopped察 poised察 as it
seemed察over the water察and I heard him cry察 I can't察I can't ─and he sank
down all in a heap on the bank察and fell again to sobbing。 I hope never to
see a manif you can call Smugg a manlike that again。
He sat where he was察 and I where I was察 till the moon paled and a
distant hint of day discovered us。 Then he rose察brushed himself with his
hands察and slunk quickly from the bank。 Had he looked anywhere but on
the ground察he must have seen me察as it was察I only narrowly avoided him察
and fell again into my place behind him。 All the way back to our garden
I followed him。 As he passed through the gate察 I quickened my pace察
overtook him察 and laid my hand on his arm。 The man's face gave me
what I remember my old nurse used to call ;quite a turn。;
;You're an average idiot察 aren't you拭─ said I。 ;Oh察 yes察 I've been
squatting in the wet by that infernal river察 too。 You ought to get three
months察by rights。;
He looked at me in a dazed sort of way。
;I daren't察─he said。 ;I wanted to察but I daren't。;
There is really nothing more。 We went to the wedding察 leaving
Smugg in bed察and in the evening we察leaving Smugg still in bed I told
Mary to keep an eye on him察 and carrying a dozen of the grocer's best
port察went up to dance at Dill's farm。 Joe was polished till I could almost
see myself in his cheek察 and Pyrrha looked more charming than ever。
She and Joe were to leave us early察to go to Joe's own house in the village察
but I managed to get one dance with her。 Indeed察I believe she wanted a
word with me。
;Well察all's well that ends well察isn't it拭─I began。 ;No more scoldings

Not from Mrs。 Dill察anyhow。;
;You can't let that alone察sir察─said Pyrrha。
I chuckled gently。
;Oh察 I'll never refer to it again察─ said I。 ;This is a fine wedding of
yours察Betsy。;
;It's good of you and the other gentlemen to come察sir。;
;We had to see the last of you察─and I sighed very ostentatiously。
Pyrrha laughed。 She did not believe in it察and she knew that I knew
she did not察but the little compliment pleased her察all the same。
;Smugg察─ I pursued察 is ill in bed。 But perhaps he wouldn't have
come察anyhow。;
;If you please察sir; Pyrrha began察but she stopped。
;Yes察Betsy拭 What is it拭─
;Would you take a message for me察sir拭─
;If it's a proper one察Betsy察for a married lady to send。;
She laughed a little察and said此
;Oh察it's no harm察sir。 I'm afraid he ainthe's rather down察sir。;
;Who拭─
;Why察that Smugg察sir。;
;Oh察that Smugg Why察yes察a little down察Betsy察I fear。;
;You might tell him as I bear no malice察siras I'm not angry with
him察I mean。;
;Certainly察─said I。 ;It will probably do him good。;
;He got me into trouble察but there察I can make allowances察and it's all
right now察sir。;
;In fact you forgive him拭─
;I think you might tell him so察sir察─said Betsy。
;But察─said I察 are you aware that he was another's all the time拭─
;What察sir拭─
;Oh察yes engaged to be married。;
;Well察I never Him What察all the while he;
;Precisely。;
;Well察that beats everything。 Oh察if I'd known that ─

;I'll give him your message。;
;No察sir察not now察I thank you。 The villain ─
;You are right察─said I。 ;I think your mother ought to have scolded
him察too。;
;Now you promised察sir; but Joe came up察and I escaped。

CHAPTER IV。
A REPENTANT SINNER。
It was察 I believe察 mainly as a compliment to me that Miss Audrey
Liston was asked to Poltons。 Miss Liston and I were very good friends察
and my cousin Dora Polton thought察as she informed me察that it would be
nice for me to have someone I could talk to about ;books and so on。; I
did not complain。 Miss Liston was a pleasant young woman of six´and´
twenty察I liked her very much except on paper察and I was aware that she
made it a point of duty to read something at least of what I wrote。 She
was in the habit of describing herself as an ;authoress in a small way。; If
it were pointed out that six three´volume novels in three years the term of
her literary activity察at the time of which I write could hardly be called ;a
small way察─she would smile modestly and say that it was not really much察
and if she were told that the English language embraced no such word as
;authoress察─ she would smile again and say that it ought to察 a position
toward the bugbear of correctness with which察I confess察I sympathize in
some degree。 She was very diligent察she worked from ten to one every
day while she was at Poltons察how much she wrote is between her and her
conscience。
There was another impeachment which Miss Liston was hardly at the
trouble to deny。 ;Take my characters from life拭─ she would exclaim。
;Surely every artist; Miss Liston often referred to herself as an artist
;must拭─ And she would proceed to maintainwhat is perhaps true
sometimesthat people rather liked being put into books察just as they like
being photographed察for all that they grumble and pretend to be afflicted
when either process is levied against them。 In discussing this matter with
Miss Liston I felt myself on delicate ground察 for it was notorious that I
figured in her first book in the guise of a misogynistic genius察the fact that
she lengthened and thickened my hair察 converted it from an
indeterminate brown to a dusky black察gave me a drooping mustache察and
invested my very ordinary workaday eyes with a strange magnetic
