For on that night he creeps in at the bed's feet like a gulled bassa that has
married a relation of the Grand Signior察and that night he has his arms at
liberty。 Did not she tell you at what a distance she keeps him拭 He has
confessed to me that察but at some certain times察that is察I suppose察when
she apprehends being with child察he never has the privilege of using the
familiarity of a husband with a wife。 He was once given to scrambling
with his hands察 and sprawling in his sleep察 and ever since she has him
swaddled up in blankets察and his hands and feet swathed down察and so put
to bed察and there he lies with a great beard察like a Russian bear upon a drift
of snow。 You are very great with him察 I wonder he never told you his
grievances此 he will察I warrant you。
CARE。 Excessively foolish But that which gives me most hopes
of her is her telling me of the many temptations she has resisted。
MEL。 Nay察then you have her察for a woman's bragging to a man that
she has overcome temptations is an argument that they were weakly
offered察and a challenge to him to engage her more irresistibly。 'Tis only an
enhancing the price of the commodity察by telling you how many customers
have underbid her。
CARE。 Nay察I don't despair。 But still she has a grudging to you。 I
talked to her t'other night at my Lord Froth's masquerade察 when I'm

satisfied she knew me察and I had no reason to complain of my reception察
but I find women are not the same bare´faced and in masks察and a vizor
disguises their inclinations as much as their faces。
MEL。 'Tis a mistake察 for women may most properly be said to be
unmasked when they wear vizors察for that secures them from blushing and
being out of countenance察and next to being in the dark察or alone察they are
most truly themselves in a vizor mask。 Here they come此 I'll leave you。
Ply her close察and by and by clap a BILLET DOUX into her hand察for a
woman never thinks a man truly in love with her察 till he has been fool
enough to think of her out of her sight察 and to lose so much time as to
write to her。
SCENE VI。
CARELESS察SIR PAUL察and LADY PLYANT。
SIR PAUL。 Shan't we disturb your meditation察Mr。 Careless拭 You
would be private拭
CARE。 You bring that along with you察Sir Paul察that shall be always
welcome to my privacy。
SIR PAUL。 O sweet sir察you load your humble servants察both me and
my wife察with continual favours。
LADY PLYANT。 Sir Paul察 what a phrase was there拭 You will be
making answers察 and taking that upon you which ought to lie upon me。
That you should have so little breeding to think Mr。 Careless did not apply
himself to me。 Pray what have you to entertain anybody's privacy拭 I
swear and declare in the face of the world I'm ready to blush for your
ignorance。
SIR PAUL。 I acquiesce察my lady察but don't snub so loud。 Aside to
her。А
LADY PLYANT。 Mr。 Careless察 if a person that is wholly illiterate
might be supposed to be capable of being qualified to make a suitable
return to those obligations察which you are pleased to confer upon one that
is wholly incapable of being qualified in all those circumstances察I'm sure I
should rather attempt it than anything in the world察 。CourtesiesА for I'm
sure there's nothing in the world that I would rather。 CourtesiesА But I

know Mr。 Careless is so great a critic察and so fine a gentleman察that it is
impossible for me ´
CARE。 O heavens madam察you confound me。
SIR PAUL。 Gads´bud察she's a fine person。
LADY PLYANT。 O Lord sir察pardon me察we women have not those
advantages察 I know my imperfections。 But at the same time you must
give me leave to declare in the face of the world that nobody is more
sensible of favours and things察for with the reserve of my honour I assure
you察Mr。 Careless察I don't know anything in the world I would refuse to a
person so meritorious。 You'll pardon my want of expression。
CARE。 O察your ladyship is abounding in all excellence察particularly
that of phrase。
LADY PLYANT。 You are so obliging察sir。
CARE。 Your ladyship is so charming。
SIR PAUL。 So察now察now察now察my lady。
LADY PLYANT。 So well bred。
CARE。 So surprising。
LADY PLYANT。 So well dressed察 so BONNE MINE察 so eloquent察
so unaffected察so easy察so free察so particular察so agreeable。
SIR PAUL。 Ay察so察so察there。
CARE。 O Lord察I beseech you madam察don't。
LADY PLYANT。 So gay察so graceful察so good teeth察so fine shape察so
fine limbs察so fine linen察and I don't doubt but you have a very good skin察
sir察
CARE。 For heaven's sake察madam察I'm quite out of countenance。
SIR PAUL。 And my lady's quite out of breath察 or else you should
hearGads´bud察you may talk of my Lady Froth。
CARE。 O fie察fie察not to be named of a day。 My Lady Froth is very
well in her accomplishments。 But it is when my Lady Plyant is not
thought of。 If that can ever be。
LADY PLYANT。 O察you overcome me。 That is so excessive。
SIR PAUL。 Nay察I swear and vow that was pretty。
CARE。 O察Sir Paul察you are the happiest man alive。 Such a lady
that is the envy of her own sex察and the admiration of ours。

SIR PAUL。 Your humble servant。 I am察 I thank heaven察in a fine
way of living察as I may say察peacefully and happily察and I think need not
envy any of my neighbours察 blessed be providence。 Ay察 truly察 Mr。
Careless察my lady is a great blessing察a fine察discreet察well´ spoken woman
as you shall see察if it becomes me to say so察and we live very comfortably
together察she is a little hasty sometimes察and so am I察but mine's soon over察
and then I'm so sorry。O Mr。 Careless察if it were not for one thing ´
SCENE VII。
CARELESS察SIR PAUL察LADY PLYANT察BOY with a letter。
LADY PLYANT。 How often have you been told of that察 you
jackanapes拭
SIR PAUL。 Gad so察gad's´bud。 Tim察carry it to my lady察you should
have carried it to my lady first。
BOY。 'Tis directed to your worship。
SIR PAUL。 Well察well察my lady reads all letters first。 Child察do so
no more察d'ye hear察Tim。
BOY。 No察and please you。
SCENE VIII。
CARELESS察SIR PAUL察LADY PLYANT。
SIR PAUL。 A humour of my wife's此 you know women have little
fancies。 But as I was telling you察 Mr。 Careless察 if it were not for one
thing察 I should think myself the happiest man in the world察 indeed that
touches me near察very near。
CARE。 What can that be察Sir Paul拭
SIR PAUL。 Why察I have察I thank heaven察a very plentiful fortune察a
good estate in the country察some houses in town察and some money察a pretty
tolerable personal estate察 and it is a great grief to me察 indeed it is察 Mr。
Careless察that I have not a son to inherit this。 'Tis true I have a daughter察
and a fine dutiful child she is察though I say it察blessed be providence I may
say察for indeed察Mr。 Careless察I am mightily beholden to providence。 A
poor unworthy sinner。 But if I had a son Ah察that's my affliction察and

my only affliction察indeed I cannot refrain tears when it comes in my mind。
Cries。А
CARE。 Why察 methinks that might be easily remediedmy lady's a
fine likely woman ´
SIR PAUL。 Oh察a fine likely woman as you shall see in a summer's
day。 Indeed she is察Mr。 Careless察in all respects。
CARE。 And I should not have taken you to have been so old ´
SIR PAUL。 Alas察that's not it察Mr。 Careless察ah that's not it察no察no察
you shoot wide of the mark a mile察 indeed you do察 that's not it察 Mr。
Careless察no察no察that's not it。
CARE。 No拭 What can be the matter then拭
SIR PAUL。 You'll scarcely believe me when I shall tell youmy lady
is so nice。 It's very strange察but it's true察too trueshe's so very nice察that
I don't believe she would touch a man for the world。 At least not above
once a year察I'm sure I have found it so察and察alas察what's once a year to an
old man察 who would do good in his generation拭 Indeed it's true察 Mr。
Careless察it breaks my heart。 I am her husband察as I may say察though far
unworthy of that honour察yet I am her hu
