called the Spirit of the Lord察 as being very bold察 and prepared for any
emergency。 84 Any unusual virtue or power is called the Spirit or Virtue
of the Lord察Ex。 xxxi3此 I will fill him Bezaleel with the Spirit of the
Lord察─ i。e。察 as the Bible itself explains察 with talent above man's usual
endowment。 85 So Isa。 xi2此 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon
him察─is explained afterwards in the text to mean the spirit of wisdom and

understanding察of counsel and might。
86 The melancholy of Saul is called the melancholy of the Lord察or a
very deep melancholy察the persons who applied the term showing that they
understood by it nothing supernatural察in that they sent for a musician to
assuage it by harp´playing。 87 Again察the ;Spirit of the Lord; is used as
equivalent to the mind of man察for instance察Job xxvii3此 And the Spirit of
the Lord in my nostrils察─ the allusion being to Gen。 ii7此 And God
breathed into man's nostrils the breath of life。; 88 Ezekiel also察
prophesying to the dead察says xxvii14察 And I will give to you My Spirit察
and ye shall live察─i。e。 I will restore you to life。 89 In Job xxxiv14察we
read此 If He gather unto Himself His Spirit and breath察─in Gen。 vi3此 My
Spirit shall not always strive with man察for that he also is flesh察─i。e。 since
man acts on the dictates of his body察and not the spirit which I gave him to
discern the good察I will let him alone。 90 So察too察Ps。 li12此 Create in me
a clean heart察0 God察and renew a right spirit within me察cast me not away
from Thy presence察and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me。; 91 It was
supposed that sin originated only from the body察and that good impulses
come from the mind察therefore the Psalmist invokes the aid of God against
the bodily appetites察but prays that the spirit which the Lord察the Holy One察
had given him might be renewed。 92 Again察 inasmuch as the Bible察in
concession to popular ignorance察describes God as having a mind察a heart察
emotions ´ nay察even a body and breath ´ the expression Spirit of the Lord
is used for God's mind察disposition察emotion察strength察or breath。 93 Thus察
Isa。 xl13此 Who hath disposed the Spirit of the Lord拭─ i。e。 who察 save
Himself察 hath caused the mind of the Lord to will anything撮拭 and Isa。
lxiii10此 But they rebelled察and vexed the Holy Spirit。;
94 The phrase comes to be used of the law of Moses察 which in a
sense expounds God's will察Is。 lxiii。 11察 Where is He that put His Holy
Spirit within him拭─ meaning察 as we clearly gather from the context察 the
law of Moses。 95 Nehemiah察speaking of the giving of the law察says察i20察
;Thou gavest also thy good Spirit to instruct them。; 96 This is referred to
in Deut。 iv6察 This is your wisdom and understanding察─ and in Ps。
cxliii10察 Thy good Spirit will lead me into the land of uprightness。; 97
The Spirit of the Lord may mean the breath of the Lord察for breath察no less

than a mind察a heart察and a body are attributed to God in Scripture察as in Ps。
xxxiii6。 98 Hence it gets to mean the power察strength察or faculty of God察
as in Job xxxiii4察 The Spirit of the Lord made me察─i。e。 the power察or察if
you prefer察the decree of the Lord。 99 So the Psalmist in poetic language
declares察xxxiii6察 By the word of the Lord were the heavens made察and
all the host of them by the breath of His mouth察─i。e。 by a mandate issued察
as it were察in one breath。 100 Also Ps。 cxxxix7察 Wither shall I go from
Thy Spirit察or whither shall I flee from Thy presence拭─i。e。 whither shall I
go so as to be beyond Thy power and Thy presence拭
101 Lastly察the Spirit of the Lord is used in Scripture to express the
emotions of God察e。g。 His kindness and mercy察Micah ii7察 Is the Spirit
i。e。 the mercyА of the Lord straitened拭 。102 Are these cruelties His
doings拭─。103 Zech。 iv6察 Not by might or by power察but My Spirit i。e。
mercyВ察 saith the Lord of hosts。; 104 The twelfth verse of the seventh
chapter of the same prophet must察I think察be interpreted in like manner此
;Yea察they made their hearts as an adamant stone察lest they should hear the
law察and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in His Spirit i。e。 in
His mercyА by the former prophets。; 105 So also Haggai ii5此 So My
Spirit remaineth among you此fear not。;
106 The passage in Isaiah xlviii16察 And now the Lord and His
Spirit hath sent me察─may be taken to refer to God's mercy or His revealed
law察for the prophet says察 From the beginning; i。e。 from the time when I
first came to you察 to preach God's anger and His sentence forth against
you ;I spoke not in secret察from the time that it was察there am I察─and now
I am sent by the mercy of God as a joyful messenger to preach your
restoration。 107 Or we may understand him to mean by the revealed law
that he had before come to warn them by the command of the law Levit。
xix17 in the same manner under the same conditions as Moses had
warned them察that now察like Moses察he ends by preaching their restoration。
108 But the first explanation seems to me the best。
109 Returning察 then察 to the main object of our discussion察 we find
that the Scriptural phrases察 The Spirit of the Lord was upon a prophet察─
;The Lord breathed His Spirit into men察─ Men were filled with the Spirit
of God察 with the Holy Spirit察─ &c。察 are quite clear to us察 and mean that
22

prophets were endowed with a peculiar and extraordinary power察 and
devoted themselves to piety with especial constancy3察 that thus they
perceived the mind or the thought of God察for we have shown that God's
Spirit signifies in Hebrew God's mind or thought察and that the law which
shows His mind and thought is called His Spirit察 hence that the
imagination of the prophets察 inasmuch as through it were revealed the
decrees of God察may equally be called the mind of God察and the prophets
be said to have possessed the mind of God。 110 On our minds also the
mind of God and His eternal thoughts are impressed察 but this being the
same for all men is less taken into account察 especially by the Hebrews察
who claimed a pre´eminence察 and despised other men and other men's
knowledge。
111 Lastly察 the prophets were said to possess the Spirit of God
because men knew not the cause of prophetic knowledge察 and in their
wonder referred it with other marvels directly to the Deity察 styling it
Divine knowledge。
111 We need no longer scruple to affirm that the prophets only
perceived God's revelation by the aid of imagination察that is察by words and
figures either real or imaginary。 112 We find no other means mentioned
in Scripture察and therefore must not invent any。 113 As to the particular
law of Nature by which the communications took place察 I confess my
ignorance。 114 I might察indeed察say as others do察that they took place by
the power of God察 but this would be mere trifling察 and no better than
explaining some unique specimen by a transcendental term。 115
Everything takes place by the power of God。 116 Nature herself is the
power of God under another name察and our ignorance of the power of God
is co´extensive with our ignorance of Nature。 117 It is absolute folly察
therefore察to ascribe an event to the power of God when we know not its
natural cause察which is the power of God。
118 However察we are not now inquiring into the causes of prophetic
knowledge。 119 We are only attempting察as I have said察to examine the
Scriptural documents察 and to draw our conclusions from them as from
ultimate natural facts察the causes of the documents do not concern us。
120 As the prophets perceived the revelations of God by the aid of

imagination察 they could indisputably perceive much that is beyond the
boundary of the intellect察 for many more ideas can be constructed from
words and figures than from the principles and notions on which the whole
fabric of reasoned knowledge is reared。
121 Thus we have a clue to the fact that the prophets perceived
nearly everything in parables and allegories察and clothed spiritual truths in
bodily forms察for such is the usual method of imagination。 122 We need
no longer wonder that Scripture and the prophets speak so strangely and
obscurely of God's Spirit or Mind cf。 Numbers xi17察 1 Kings xxii21察
&c。察that the Lord was seen by Micah as sitting察by Daniel as an old man
clothed in white察 by Ezekiel as a fire察 that th
